I’ve been a long time member and frequent lurker. I never feel I have anything to contribute to most topic and just enjoy reading them. This time I am at a loss and hope you all night be able to sway me one way or another.
I purchase items because I enjoy them, not to resell. My collection consists of Ghostbusters (hope that was obvious) as well as many other 80s properties. 99% has been bought for enjoyment and that small 1% is if I find something I have and want to sell to help support my collection I’ll get it and do just that. I have been toying with the idea of selling a very minimal amount of my collection part of which includes the Matty 12" ghostbusters, again to support my collection. There happens to be some larger items coming soon which Ill need the funds for.
I recently moved and many items I once “shelved” I now have space for and I currently have the opportunity to display the 12" guys with the slimer/ no ghost statue that we released a few years ago. These were on my “to sell” list and now not only am I considering keeping them, I’m thinking about opening them to display.
Ultimately I know the choice is mine but listening to my dilemma, what would you do in my shoes? Are these 4 worth keeping? Despite my enjoyment in them they’re a little valuable and I could get some additional “collection” funds.
I think I’ve pretty much opened all of the GB toys and memorabilia I got over the last 30 years. Except one. I don’t expect it to be worth anything in the years to come but I admit it is nice having something unopened in-the-box still.
An unopened item is something you have never formed an emotional attachment to, because always in the back of your mind its resale value was of first and foremost importance.
It’s never been played with, it’s never been loved. It’s never fulfilled its intended purpose.
Or just do what I do. Buy 4 damn sets of everything. One to open and play with. One for backup if I break the one I opened and play with, one to keep pristine in package cause I love that aspect of collection. And one for my son to have when he gets older.
Sometimes things look better in their package, and sometimes I need a change. I have both sets of the 12" figures, 1 full set of GB1 and 2 full sets of the GBII, which, up until recently, remained in their boxes. I decided I needed a change, so now the GB1 set and 1 GBII set are out of box and in display cases while the remaining set still sits boxed and displayed on top of my shelves.
The fundamental concept that some collectors are absolutely insane and crazy. There wasnt a literal joke written into the post. I forgot how sarcasm doesnt shine sometimes on the internet.
Well I weighed everyone’s thoughts and I chose to open them. I do like the packaging a lot however the spot I had available to store them wouldnt allow them to remain in box and they would have just been packed away. I’m really trying to get away from not keeping things if I have to store them.
Opening them allowed me to keep them and actually I like them a lot out of box so no regrets! I actually might entertain getting some better head sculpts for Ray and Peter how that they aren’t in box.
Well I feel great since I opened my 1/6 Mattels… I dont mind them as they are but now that theyre open Ive decided to update them over time - Ray and Pete’s headsculpts to start with.
Anyway that RGB Janine and Sam Hain is a nice set. Im glad they released this in addition to the Ghostbusters. It’s relatively easy to find and I’ve even still seen it on the discount racks at TRU recently. I say open it.
