Trap Cartridge.

I looked at the varioius plans for the ghost traps, and they all have the removable cartridge. The only thing I can’t deduce (maybe I just didn’t look hard enough at the plans) is how the cartridge is kept from falling out of the base when it’s hanging on a belt. Any solutions you guys out there have would be appreciated.

Strong magnets?.. I don’t know? I haven’t finished the trap

I started last spring. But I hadn’t actually planned on making the cartridge removable, so I never really thought about it.

That’s what I was thinking, Skywalker, but unshielded magnets around the electronics I habitually carry in my pockets would be bad. I was kinda hoping there’d be a more mechanical idea out there.

You could incorporate a dovetail type of groove with a cupboard latch at the rear of the cartridge to hold it in, one of those male/female latches. When I made my traps i just bolted it all together with a wing nut inside the cartridge, besides what would you really need to take the cartridge out for anyway? Mostly it just hangs on your belt

Thanks for the tip, Irri. The only reason I’d want the cartridge to actually come out is for authenticity’s sake.

You could but a little half hatch (spring loaded) that swings down when you want to remove the cartridge.

The way I’ve always done it is exactly like is shwon in the pics of the hero prop. three alternating layers, and let friction do the work!

Man…it seems like ages since I posted here lol…but back on topic. When I built my trap, I built is using Sentra and Styrene…build the cartridge seperate and had it in place with…Velcro. Thats right Velcro. To my amazement, it held in pretty well. So, if I want to pull the thing out, then I just give it a little tug and presto, the cartridge is out.

AFAIK in the movie two different traps were used, the “hang on the belt” hero was a solid piece while the Containment Unit trap was two-piece and used only for that scene

If you’ll look at the HERO prop pictures, you’ll notice several things that keep the cartridge in place.

  1. The dovetail tracks that the cartridge slides into on the base of the casing. These keep it down.

  2. A small bent piece of metal is bolted on to the top rear of the cartridge with two allen head bolts. I believe a hook from the base of the handle grabs this. The hook is released by pulling back on the release located at the top of the handle column with your thumb. (The square section of the handle is hollow, and contains this hook mechanism).

  3. An x-pin (not sure of the exact part now) serial connector joins the cartridge and the casing on the rear wall; helps to pressure-fit the cartridge for snugness and may also be the electrical connection for the cartridges electronics.

I hope this helps. It’s the best interpretation I’ve come up with for securing the cartridge after analyzing the photographs until my eyes hurt from it! lol Let us know how it comes out!
