hey Law, im looking into vac forming too. and i think it should be ok to use that, as long as it heats up the plastic (which i think it would be mor that enough heat).
i just need to find a halogen heater roughley the same size as a proton pack now
lol
3 things you need to think if you’re looking at going into vacForming…
1- you need a big enough, uniform, hot enough enclosure to heat your plastic.
2- you need a big enough, strong enough vaccum system to suck your plastic
3- you will NEVER get the same detailing as you get with other moulding techniques, and it won’t be as hard as other materials.
Thing being said, try googling on the matter, there’s tons of info.
You can use anything even a heat gun but results will vary… The best bet for at home hobby use is to simply use your oven or build a custom heat hood… As suggested Google it up, there are a lot of sights that deal with it and you will find out pretty quick the heat source is one of the most complicated aspects of the whole project… Regulating the heat so it doesn’t burn the plastic and getting the plastic heated evenly to that exact right stage where it should be formed isn’t always easy, in fact it can be pretty tricky…
If you want to build your own I highly suggest you look at this site, it’s a VERY good design for at home use within a budget…
There is also a quick vacuum tank diagram on that page that I sketched up for him, so you can use a small vacuum pump and get a high volume fast pull… Much better then a shop vac and much cheaper then a high volume vacuum pump…
hey exoray, what site is it? i cant see it listed in your post?
Oops sorry…
anyone know where i can get the ceramic post and Nichrome wire #22, from in the UK?
thanks
