Heres an interesting note from GamesReactor, apparently Brendan Goss was doing press in Stockholm today and he mentioned this bit of news.
*"During a press event in Stockholm today, executive producer Brendan Goss from Terminal Reality, shared a story about the dealings they had with the actors from the previous Ghostbusters movies. Of course with Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis writing the script they had half the team sown up. Bill Murray is a very busy man, but his main demand on the game was that it featured all of the Ghostbusters including Ernie Hudson and that they were given equal screen time. He did not want it to be Peter Venkman - the game.
Another old Ghostbusters star, Sigourney Weaver was approached early on about the possibility of her reprising the role as Dana Barrett. The actress turned it down, but Brendan Goss revealed that once Bill Murray’s participation was made official she came back asking if she could be in the game (through her agent we presume). However, at that stage another leading lady had already been written into the story and the production was way too far along to include Sigourney Weaver’s character."*
Keep an ear to the ground maybe there will be more news coming out of this press tour of Stockholm. In the meantime heres a link to the original article.
If that’s true, it’s both good to hear, and a shame at the same time. A shame, because it is a shame that we COULD have had Dana Barrett return, but didn’t get it. I’m sure we’d have all loved to have Dana return in the game, perhaps with her and Peter finally tying the knot, or at least still together this time around. I mean, I wouldn’t want the whole story to revolve around Dana getting into some kind of trouble again, but I really would have at least liked her to still be around. I mean, Venkman and Dana were THE couple. You really want them to end up together. They are just one of those iconic couples you want to see endure.
I think at some point Venkman chasing tail could get a little old, well seeing the entire story arc of the first movie was him trying to impress her and prove himself to her because she was different than “all the others” GB2, he had to prove himself again and win her back after he f’d up. He wanted to be with her.
Not to say it isn’t funny because in the RGB universe where Dana’s existence isn’t acknowledged, it allowed him to be that character again and was funny for the cartoon. The movies pretty much solidified they have a relationship I think. Maybe Dana would have been written in the game in a somewhat minor role similar to Janine and probably Louis if he was in the game.
They’re part of the GB lore but I think after the first two movies even Dan Aykroyd would know not to use that again(Dana as the damsel in distress) Especially only a couple of years after GB2. It would be fine to have to save a girl that didn’t have to be the love interest I think. I guess we’ll have to see how the game’s story unfolds.
If they make it work without Dana, I’m fine with that but to think that Venkman gets Dana, loses her, and wins her back again and loses her seems to be a little pathetic for the character. Is the new girl the love interest or is it who they have to save and maybe Venkman just does a little shameless flirting? I can see that working but to see Venkman fall for a different girl would kinda suck I guess. I guess Dan and Harold would have the biggest say in what happens with that whole thing.
I think Dana’s presence would be fine if she didn’t go anywhere with the guys. Venkman is still free to “scope out” the ladies IMO. Not again in the same capacity though. Especially if they do GB3, that has to be some great script and not include Dana as the main damsel.
Well, I’m not sure if everyone is going to get their wish - Since the new female lead is apparantly tied into all of this, I’m assuming she basically is providing the same role Dana did in the first 2.
noooo that would imply a LOT of Ghostbusters movies It’ll be interesting if GB3 is made, Venkman will need ■■■■■■ to even “make me hard anymore” I think his libido will have died down.
I don’t think any of them ever set out to make a long series of films. In that aspect, I think there’s enough evolution of the Venkman character. We see him in the beginning with the blond girl and says enough about his character to know he’s a womanizer. Dana is the one to make him change. That was the point of him trying to save the world in the first movie. To impress a woman that was out of his league and wouldn’t fall for his usual ■■■■.
I think it works for Ghostbusters 2 in a similar way. Also Ghostbusters differs from James Bond for not really being that sexual. Things are implied and inferred but the fact is nobody wants to see Bill Murray in a sex scene. I think it’s more like Han Solo and Princess Leia than James Bond.
I was very glad to hear about the other part of the article where Murray said he wanted a greater role for the other GB’s, including Ernie Hudson.
As much as I love Bill Murray (which is like, a lot) I want to see more of the other GB’s.The movies do kinda feel like Peter Venkman and his Ghostbusters instead of a team.
I want an Egon story. I want to see Ray and Winston actually grow and have some development like Peter got in the movies.
I understand that in a movie you have a limited time frame and you can’t do everything but with this new game you can and I am very glad to see that Mr. Murray wants that to happen too.
In a film, for marketing and to play to the strengths the audience pays for, of course they’ll push Murray, so it’s kind of a trap for him. He may want a good film full of character development, but in what is basically a sci-fi/superhero franchise starring Bill Murray, they’re going to play up the sfx, spectacle and Bill Murray himself. In the game? There isn’t going to be an equal amount of pressure, because the game has to stand on it’s own apart from the talent, so they don’t have to push Murray so much harder.
So yeah, I was happy to hear that he wanted to even out the “screen time.” Murray always just wanted a good story for the audience.
As for Weaver? Dammit, I wanted her in. I know her presence (if they make her the central victim) is repititious, but after GB2 and Venkman’s interaction with Oscar, it kind of made it something that requires permanence. They were in the perfect set-up for a lasting love. If they hadn’t included her in GB2, it wouldn’t have gone there, but it did.
So knowing that Dana is AWOL in “GB3” is annoying. How could Venkman have lost Dana this time? I hope they come up with an explaination that she and Oscar are touring Europe with the orchestra, or something. From a character and story standpoint, it doesn’t add-up or feel fulfilling for Peter and Dana to have split up again.
I mean, I think Dana as the central victim could work (if they were to go there again) if they explained it in a retcon of-sorts, that she’s the target for all of this demonic shit because her ancestors were demon-summoning Satanists or something. A backstory like that would let GB2 and GB3 (assuming that she’d be the main victim again) fall into place as sensible.
i’d like to see Oscar in the new team while Dana is touring Europe…you know, he finds classical music boring so he decide to live with Peter until Dana returns.
maybe in a future game… this is 1991… Oscar is only about 3 years old at this point… a WEE bit young to be handling a proton pack… as hilarious as that would be…
I’m kinda glad Dana isn’t the focus again… I mean, c’mon, how many times can one person be the focal point for bringing upon an extradimentional god bent on world ■■■■■■■■■■/destruction?
Agreed, also there is a deleted bit in the GB2 script that would have acknowledged/made fun of that fact.
STANTZ
I think we hit the honeypot, boys. There's
something brewing under the street.

Peter, do you think maybe I have some genetic

to these supernatural things.
VENKMAN
You mean like the time you got possessed and
turned into a monster terror dog? No, not
a chance. Total coincidence.

Am I right?
