What's up with the elbow pads?

I was watching both GB 1 & 2 today and as I was looking at the uniforms I noticed that the pads were all grey. Just about every picture of people’s uniforms have the middle part of the pad as white and I’m just wondering why. Does the dye not take in the padding? I have my pair of pads but I haven’t dyed them yet. If I can’t dye the middle part I am planning on just taking a grey Sharpie to them.

That would be the correct answer…

I did a search for ‘dying pads’ there’s a few others but here’s a good discussion.

many people opt to spray paint the bubble gray!

I got a nice gray marker from the store and just colored the pads before I dyed them, looked nice and even when they came out.

It also depends on the brand. My original pair were a set of those Franklin ones that you can get from Walmart or Target and they dyed really well. The pair I have now are the ones from Cannon Sports. I ended up using 2 boxes of Black and they were still really light, so I ended up using primer and sprayed the pad itself. It looks really good. The paint not only makes them darker but you get a cool shading effect in the crevices on the pads.

It might also depend on whether or not you use the liquid or powdered RIT dye. But like most people in this topic have mentioned, they just don’t hold dye well. I would dye them first then tape off the elastic and just paint the pad until you get the shade of gray you desire.

Good luck!

Before you guys dyed the pads, how did you get the label off of them? Like the ones in the shop now.

I was wondering that also. How do you get the logo off.

I had a pair of white Franklins originally, and I used a pair of tweezers to get the logo off. It’s a painstaking process, but it’s worth it in the end. Then I used a small pair of scissors to cut off the excess fuzz / fluff, but I think one of those motorized lint removers might do that job better. After that, I dyed them. All pads are going to take the dye differently. I used a black sharpie to color in that rectangle on the front of the pads. It turned out nice. But, the bad thing about those Franklins are that the bubble part is all wrong. I ended up combining the Franklins with these pads: http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/31VBFSTR79L._SS500_.jpg

They’ll work until I can grab some Markworts later on.

I had similar elbow pads with a decal on the front and I just peeled it off and actually used the mustache trimmer on my electric razor to smooth is out. Something I used to do with my dads on my socks when I was little.

You used to shave your socks

I had the franklins as well and i also took the label off with tweezers and it was a pain in the behind, so i feel ur pain

A funny thing about the Franklin’s is that my first pair, a pair of the black ones, the lettering practically fell off with very little effort. But for some reason the white Franklin’s lettering seriously feels like it’s been branded to the pad. It took me about an hour and some very sore fingers to finally get the lettering off. But in the process, I picked off pieces of the fabric as well. Also some of the glue residue was still present when I dyed them, so if you look closely you can make out letters. It’s a good thing that I wanted my pads to looks weathered. I have heard that if you try soaking them in boiling water, that the glue evaporates and the letter fall off. But I don’t know. A friend has a pair of the black ones and we tried to get the lettering off and it wouldn’t budge, so we used black shoe polish to cover the letters. I guess that Franklin has changed the kind of glue they use. Now if only they would change the style of the pads

Well I just got the pads and didnt want to spend time taking the letters off so i just grabbed a can of machine grey spray paint and sprayed the pads and this is what i got i fell it looks nice
