Legend has it that dan designed the prototype, but who built the original, first pack? those details known?
I’m guessing the prop design team. I’d like to think Dan dropped off a box filled with random parts and a rough sketch and told them to “Get at it!” but I’m doubtful that’s how it happened.
This guy ;-):
So the packs were made by a bearded white man sounds kind of cool. I could picture someone asking, who made the movie proton packs? answer “The bearded white man”.
Chris
nah he only made the stunt packs by the looks of things ![]()
I hear Cyland Props designed them.
Yeah, well, I think they were made by aliens to use as landing platfor…
Oh, wait, that’s Stargate.

Egon.
I hear Cyland Props designed them.
 :crunch:
I swear I remember reading on one of the old GB sites back in 2001 that Dan did in fact do a couple of designs and went as far as making a prototype with one of the prop guys out of balsa wood and a bunch of old radio parts and then the prop department refined the design and went on from there. There also used to be a few sketches that Dan did of the equipment and ecto-1 out there that I have searched for the last few years that have since vanished from the interwebs. I know that a member here Jackivy has tons of rare finds saved and archived on his computer, Im gonna see if he can post some stuff.
let’s get this guy then!
but who built the original, first pack?
Jesus
I love Jesus’s style.

That is in fact correct and the info info originally came from “Making Ghostbusters” by Don Shay:
**PG 7: **When the script was finished some months later, he [Dan Aykroyd] submitted it to Reitman once again - complete with conceptual illustrations and a quickie videotape of himself in a jumpsuit-based uniform embellished with makeshift nutrona wands and a proton pack fashioned from styrofoam and old radio parts.
And to answer the question at hand:
**PG 69: **Dan Aykroyd’s fascination with ‘ghostbusting’ hardware was evident from his very first draft - and even in the final film, the technology he concieved remained essentially intact…The proton packs and nutrona wands were constructed in balsawood and cardboard prototype form by Steven Dane - with signifigant input from Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd - And then turned over to Chuck Gaspar for construction.
Thanks for tracking down a good answer to that question.
lets get some pics going
Thanks for tracking down a good answer to that question.
Eh - I couldn’t help myself ;-)…
Oh hell yah, I’d love to see those prototypes. Probably in Dan’s basement or garage somewhere being used by his dog as a chew toy.
Balsa! It’s what’s for dinner!
