Why All the Support for the Ghostbusters Reboot?

The feeling I’m getting lately among the Ghostbusters community is a slow, progressive shift from opposition to support for this reboot—at least I’m noticing far more supporters than detractors as of late. I’m curious, since I respect fellow GB fans, to read the reasons a fan would be happy to see this movie. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not asking to reignite the overflowing negativity the Internet originally produced, and I especially don’t invite the chauvinistic hate comments. For the record, I highly dislike Feig and his vision, but it has nothing to do with his choice to cast all females.

Here are my own points on why this movie warrants my opinion:

• Many articles state that it’s “clear” that Feig is a huge GB fan. I have yet to see any evidence of this. He may love the movies’ gizmos and the concept of a horror-comedy with average-joe heroes, but those elements were never really what made the original such a classic (and least not fully); Ghostbusters has always really been about the characters. Guess what? The characters are the one aspect he’s completely ignoring. And does anyone really think that a man who’s had the same character type in every one of his movies (and played by the same woman) can come up with a team to match the originals?

• We, as Ghostbusters fans, DO NOT owe Feig any support or sympathy. From the very beginning, he hasn’t supported the fans. Sure, he retweets pics, images, and comments that are in support of his movie. But he has never seriously addressed any of our concerns (at least not sensible responses). And if he calls for fans to stay open minded, why should we if he himself isn’t flexible with his vision? (I mean, is it THAT hard to tweak his movie to be in continuity?)

• This movie, I believe, is the death of Ghostbusters franchise as we know it. Yes, I know that we’ll always have the original two movies, and the IDW comics will and has continued that continuity. But if his remake does well, there’s no way Sony will allow another movie that isn’t a direct sequel to the remake. And if it bombs, which it won’t, there’s no way Sony will put more money into another movie, be it a sequel to the originals or otherwise.

Anyway, I am genuinely interested in hearing what people have to say. I just don’t think folks should become complacent and watch this movie just because it’s called “Ghostbusters,” because that’s what every Joe will do, and that’s how Feig will accomplish a pseudosuccess.

Well, unfortunately we can’t go 25 years back in time to where there could have been a proper sequel to GB2. The closest you’re going to get is GB: TVG.

Maybe he doesn’t want it to be? Maybe it’s a Sony requirement that he does something completely fresh? Who knows. We’ll be able to make a fairly accurate judgment once a trailer hits.

Look at where this franchise was 10-15 years ago and look at where it is now. You’re delusional, dude.

I just choose not to judge a movie I haven’t seen yet… there has been some cool things (particularly what we’ve seen so far of Kate McKinnon’s character), and some really bad (that Ecto… ugh…), but otherwise, I sit in wait and see mode…

Reitman had a poor GB3 in is hands. GB Alive Again plot points where…a great letdown, after six years of rewrites.

This reboot…has been the cause of Ghost Coprs being formed.

Ghost Corps (the new company guided by Reitman and Aykroyd) hired Drew Pearce to write a treatment and the Russos brothers to produce (and probably direct) a new Gb incarnation, different from Feigbusters, maybe a movie set in the original continuity.

Ghost Corps is working on many projects related to the original Gbs. They’re even working with the IDW team, whose work is the base for the next series of GB movies.

So, the reboot is bad…but it led to many good things to come.

It is a rotten thoot. When they’ll extract it, we will all feel much better.

I like the talent and involved whether they’re fans or not. I also like that they went with an all female cast. I like the costumes and kind of like the packs.

I don’t think there was any need to remake the original.

I’m kind of puzzled by some of the creative decisions we’ve seen so far.

I don’t care for the Ecto-1.

But it doesn’t really matter what I like or don’t like. It’s going to come out regardless. I will judge whether it looks good when we get a trailer. Ill judge the movie once I’ve seen it. It’s my choice to get upset or hope for the best. I have entirely too much stress and nonsense in my life to give any ■■■■■ about it.

Whilst it’s always greet to see further intelligent discussion take place on the forum, I fear that this topic’s goal is far less altruistic.

The topic asks for an answer to the question “why are there some fans who like the 2016 film?” The answer, which didn’t need a topic to reveal, is pretty simple:

As with all things in the diverse forum of life, there are going to be some people who will be interested in seeing this movie. There’ve been plenty of posts made in this part of the forum by those stating why they’re looking forward to the 2016 movie, and who genuinely welcome it to the franchise.

Had you not listed the points of your opinion in the starting post, maybe the topic would’ve been more neutral… But straight off the bat you’ve shown your cards that you’re not a fan of the project, and not looking forward to it… And even added a bit of hyperbole by suggesting Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters will kill the franchise.

We don’t need a topic to act as invitation to those not looking forward to the new movie to re-state their feelings on the subject, especially now that things have calmed down.
