Men’s Sized Suits for Ladies
Since there’s such a lack of suits designed for women, a lot of ladies have to resort to using men’s suits. This is where things can get a little tricky, especially with the different companies and their varying sizing systems. It does give women more choices, which is something we can all appreciate, but looking at sizing charts can be kind of overwhelming.
What we’ll be focusing on is the “conversion” from men’s to women’s. Typically Tru-spec and Rothco uniforms use the US Standard Industry sizing system (S, M, L, XL, etc) and Nomex suits use a system that uses chest and a height estimation (A number followed by: S-short, R-regular, L-long). It’s important to take your time looking at Nomex flight suits sizing charts and comparing them to your measurements. I’ve provided links below to threads that include size charts.
I’ve gathered some examples of what other ladies have used along with some of their sizing information to help make some benchmarks. I tried to interview ladies with a range of body types so you’ll be able to find at least one that’s similar to yours. And please, when you’re out shopping for suits do not feel afraid to contact sellers on measurements on a suit you’re interested in! If they don’t have the measurements listed already, most people will be willing to take a tape measure to a suit to make a sale. We’re all shaped differently. If the sizing charts befuddle you, you can always just ask for key measurements on the height, inseam, etc.
While the flight suit does feature adjustable velcro waist straps to get it to fit how you want, sometimes there will be parts that just don’t fit right. If it’s not a huge alteration, you can always take it to a local seamstress to get it taken in.
Flight suits are awesome if you want to fit that move aesthetic a bit more. There’s still room to play with the style of it and you’ll fit right in if you’re out with other folks. I hear that some ladies in warmer climates will sometimes opt for the dresses because the suits can get pretty stuffy.
Khaki suits are often listed as “tan”, so be sure to use your search terms interchangeably if you’re looking for a specific size. There’s a lot of colors out there too. If you’re looking to do a GB2 suit keep an eye out for navy or black suits and check out the dye tutorials here on GBFans.
Now let’s have a look at the pretty rare women’s sized flight suits. I figured it would be worth including in case you stumble upon them in your searches.
Women’s Sized Flight Suits
Women’s flight suits are generally smaller than men’s suits and are cut a little differently too. They have wider hips and slimmer waists. Since they’re typically pretty small they’re good for petite gals, but not so much if you’re on the fluffy side.
Flight suits sized specifically for women are darn tricky to find. There aren’t a lot of female pilots in the air force, so naturally, there’s not a huge demand for flight suits made for them. If you’re diligent and patient, accurate khaki suits for women can be found online on places like eBay, but you won’t be seeing many of them in military surplus stores. Khaki, navy, and black women’s CWU-27Ps are few and far between. There’s a few sellers on eBay that provide them in limited sizes. But if you just search for women’s flight suits most of what you’ll find will be in sage green. You don’t want that.
The number is chest size, measured right under the arms. If there’s two letters then the first letter designates the hip size (wide or medium/ W or R), and the second letter is length (Long, Regular or Short/ L,R, or S).
Keep an eye on eBay, there’s not a lot of listings on there, but every now and then someone will be letting go of their old suit (I got mine from a gal who used to fly in airshows).
If you’re intent on getting a brand new custom made suit in a women’s size it can cost upwards of $200. Godspeed, ladies.
I know I own one, here’s a pic, but uh, I’m not sure who else has one… I’d love to see more examples of women’s suits so I can nail down more of the differences.
Shorts
One thing you can do with your flight suit if you want a less risque, but still revealing option, you can take that flight suit, or a more disposable suit, and hack off the dang legs! Boom! You’ve got yourself a The New Ghostbusters issues 1-3 suit (see below)!
You have control over how short or long you want the legs to be. You can go anywhere from UPS delivery man to Daisy-Dukes. Dickies used to sell khaki rompers, but you can still take some of their jumpsuits and convert them to how you see fit. Does anybody have a picture of those suits that they used to sell, or pics of gals who wore them for GB costumes? I feel like they’re lost to the internet forever.
(I don’t have a lot of examples, but dang, look at these cuties)
Jackets and Two Piece Suits
This is kind of a miscellaneous section that I’m a huge fan of. If you like the screen accurate look of the suits but don’t feel the need to be wearing a big onsie around in public, I highly recommend going the jacket route. It’s functional, it’s professional looking, and you have a lot of leeway with how you can wear it. Some folks will simply snag a tan jacket and put some patches on it, or take an existing flight suit and alter it to be a set of jacket and pants. It’s really up to you!
Some ladies will go the Ghostbusters Lucy route and hack out the middle or make a cropped jacket and a bottom to show off a little midriff. It looks super cool.

There’s also the sole Girlbuster from the Sanctum of Slime game, Bridget Gibbons, sporting a regular flight suit.
And the infamous Lucy statue, which technically is a flight suit, but… altered.
