Nomex, Tru-Spec, and Rothco Size Charts

I’m hoping this will help both the older and newer guys here when they are looking for a new flight suit and are not sure what size to get, lengths, etc. If anyone finds anything inaccurate, wrong, misleading, and/or feels something needs to be added, please let me know so I can update when needed. :cool:

Nomex CMU-27/P Flight Suit Size Chart

Size Measurements needed:

Chest- Measurement of the largest part of your chest, usually right under your armpits, then divide by 2.

Hip- Measurement of your hips, not waist,then divide by 2.

Sleeve Inseam- Measurement from your armpit to your cuff.

Leg Inseam- Measurement from your crotch to your cuff.

Side Notes:

  • Please remember Nomex is a type of material, not a brand, so sizes may be slightly different. Also, these are sizes for a brand new suit as well, so a used suit may also be slightly smaller too.

  • Different companies produce nomex suits, so sizes will vary. This is just an estimated measurement of what suit should fit you best.

Tru-Spec 27-P Flight Suit Size Chart

Size Measurements needed:

Chest- Measurement of the largest part of your chest, usually right under your armpits.

Side Notes:

Regular Vs. Long:

- Regular leg inseam is 32" for all sizes.

- Long leg inseam is 35" for all sizes.

- Sizes small and 3XL are only available in regular and not in long.

Asian sizing Vs. Western Sizing:

- It is recommended that you purchase your suit one(1) size larger than normal to make sure you have enough room, as I believe their sizes are smaller than advertised. Ex: If you would fit a medium, you would need to purchase a large or the suit will be too small.

Rothco Air Force Style Flight Suit Size Chart

Size Measurements needed:

Chest- Measurement of the largest part of your chest, usually right under your armpits.

Side Note:

  • Small to XL will have a 33" leg inseam.

  • 2XL to 6XL will have a 34" leg inseam.

Size- Chest size

Small- 33-37"

Medium- 37-40"

Large- 40-43"

Your tru-spec sizing seems off to me

I used this chart when I bought from them and my Large fits me really comfortably even with clothes under it

You are right. I’m using the sizing from http://www.galls.com/TSAFF/style.html?assort=general_catalog&style=JS004 and I have it as waist size rather chest. Changed to be more accurate.

Yeah, that’s the thing about Rothco (besides the cheap quality of their merchandise) is that there’s no long sizes. So tall guys like me can’t get a flight suit from them (and a good thing too!)

so i see on the Nomex I have a 44" chest a 42 would be best?

A 42 or 44 should fit the best, depending on how long you want your sleeves and/or leg length to be.

Hiya, Im a tall/skinny guy about to get a Tru-Spec suit (6’2", ~155 lbs).

My measurements say I should get a medium long, but should I go a size up? Im not really sure what that bold part means. Thanks!

I would suggest a size up especially if you are gonna wear clothes under it. I would suggest that on all versions, the suits in the movie were lose fitting.

One should also note that Nomex isn’t a precise branding, it’s a material type. You will find sizes vary from individual manufacturing houses and companies.

Not trying to thread hijack or thread ■■■■…but I was curious if anyone knows the best site or vendor to buy a Nomex flight suit from? I’ve checked ebay but they all seem different…any advice on who to go with?

Thanks for posting this. I already had to return one Nomex flight suit because it was rather tight around the midsection. In the end, I think I’ll be going with a Tru-Spec, but this guide has definitely helped me be absolutely certain about the size to order.

So, just for clarification, if I’m a 37 1/2 inch chest, I should get a large, not a medium?

If you’re talking Tru-Spec sizing, I would say a large would be best. If you meant Rothco, I would stick with a medium, those suits tend to be very baggy… they make a skinny guy like me look fat. :sigh:

Wait, so a 48R in the nomex would fit a chest that was about 53" all the way around? My chest is 45-46 inches in circumference at the widest bit under my arm pits. Are you saying I should go with a 40R or 42R in the nomex? I’ve seen descriptions that sound like a 46R would fit a 46" circumference chest.

You are better off with the 48R IMO. You’ll need the extra inches for any clothes you wear underneath your suit and the fact that they need to be alil on the baggy side (but not too much) if you are going for a screen accurate look.
