As much as I hate this picture, and how much I failed at being accurate, it really shows how crappy Rothco is in comparison to the other flightsuit brands. The thing is I don’t know what type of suits these people had and I really kick myself for not asking. This was back at Dragon*Con in '08.
What do you think? I noticed I have the leg pocket whereas none of them do, so my guess is Tru-Spec. Is that the natural color or do you think they dyed it?
I’m curious to see other comparison shots of people wearing Tru-Spec just to get a better idea. I saw the ones under the ‘buying a flightsuit’ topic, but more would be nice
I wouldn’t worry about it. You’d be singing a different tune if you took a picture alongside a bunch of other GBers in rothcos. Interesting that your belt matches your suit though.
Ha, yeah that belt was just something a friend of mine happened to have before I ordered the belt from here.
But I really like the suits those people have. I hate the piss yellow of the Rothco, so I’m leaning towards ordering a Tru-Spec, but just wanted to check if anyone else agrees that that’s what they’re wearing.

I should’ve clarified that I need a new flightsuit anyways as the Rothco was a little uncomfortable (too tight and a pain in the ass to get out of). I need to get one with a little extra space. Plus I just know I’d end up doing the dye job wrong and screw it up, lol.
We went with Nomex CWU-27/P suits, as at the time they were THE thing everyone recommended. And, as Tru-Spex and Rothco need to be ordered overseas, the price for Nomex on our surplus stores came very little for the shipping and price for others. No regrets there, the Nomex is best, for us.
That’s not what I read in the ‘Buying a Flightsuit’ post. Tru-Spec is the “happy medium” of the three - Nomex, Tru-Spec, and then Rothco.
Yes, there are some pockets missing, but it still looks good. So long as it isn’t the piss yellow of the Rothco I’m satisfied, and I’m almost positive that’s what those people are wearing. I looked through the fan images of various flightsuits and **shodanmark’s ** Tru-Spec looks almost identical the way the light bounces off of it.
As for Nomex, yes those look great, but can be hard to find when you need a specific size and don’t want to spend a whole lot. I ordered a Nomex earlier this year that was fairly cheap, but turned out to be the wrong size. Those sizing charts are really strange.
This is goddamn hilarious. You’re just bitching over and over that you refuse to perform a simple, one-step modification that pretty much EVERYONE does to their suits. Hell, we even dye the Tru-specs.
It’s not hard. It takes less than an hour to complete, with only maybe 5 minutes of actual work.

By that logic, I suppose anyone getting Nomex suits are chumps because why spend a little more money when you can just buy this pos and dye it? lol.
I’ve seen the dye jobs before. Sometimes they’re good, sometimes they aren’t. I’d rather not bother and just get a suit that’s a step above it. Excuse me for expressing my opinion,
The ONLY opinion you’ve expressed is that Rothco’s suck because they are yellow. This can be changed. When it was brought up you just insisted you’re too incompetent to do it right.
You also complained that your Rothco was too tight, but I’m pretty sure there are nomex and tru-specs out there that you would find too tight - find a cosplay girl to let the crotch out or size up.
Rothco’s are cheaper, they are made of a lighter material which is nice for temperature reasons, their leg pockets are on their thighs instead of all the way down at the boot (perfect for cell phone and wallet), and they don’t have the reflective sheen of Tru-specs.
Are they accurate? No, but neither are the other two. Are they ugly out of the box? You bet, hop over to Walmart and buy some black dye for $2 and throw them in your wash.
Are the zippers brass? No. The zippers are not brass.
If you think I’m being a dick, I’m not. I’m just pointing out that your argument for hating Rothco - “yellow suits suck” - is not a valid enough reason on it’s own to swear them off. Don’t get mad at me just because you can’t argue something articulately
Dude as a fellow Georgian who’s had both…Dye the Rothco.
Nomex and Tru-Spec are just way too thick for doing anything in the summer here comfortably. My black rothco is still cooler than my old Khaki Nomex was.
Besides I’ve grown to like my piss yellow Rothco as wearing it annoys Ron Daniels.
Do you mind me asking how tall you are/how much do you weigh? I just got a nomex and it is awesome. It’s a 52L (I’m 5’8" 250lbs.). I would suggest trying all the different suits and seeing what you like best.
About the same, just at 6’0". If I could’ve found a Nomex in the right size and a decent price I would’ve gone for it. I got a Nomex before, and that crazy sizing chart didn’t help at all, because I ended up getting the wrong size. Something like a 50-52 is probably what I need.
I got it on ebay for $49.90 after shipping. I guess they’re pretty tough to find but I went on pretty frequentlyfor about a week or two and snagged it up when I saw it (it was a buy it now). Just search “nomex 50” or “nomex 52”. Good luck! And like someone said, the material is heavier that the rothco but I don’t think it’s too bad.
I’m thinking about getting a truspec and trying it out so let me know if you get one and what you think.
When going for the Nomex suits, please remember that the size is inches on your chest, and the letters S R L refer to Short, Regular and Long. If you are near 6’ long, you’ll need the L nomex. Otherwise there is a crotch bite, and a bad one.
I am 5.73, and about 150 pounds, and a 44R fits me like a glove.
I’m on the left. Veka, on the right is using a 48L. It is too long for him, R or even S would’ve been better. Still, we had to wait about two years to get our suits to the local surplus. The sizing on the suits was so bizarre that we needed to go and try them out on the store.
Well I ordered a Tru-Spec on Sunday and got it yesterday (super fast!). I’m not quite sure if I should send it back for a size lower. I ordered a 2XL so I have a comfy, kinda baggy fit. But it might be too baggy, Idk. Plus it seems to me the chest pockets are too low. I’m going to post a pic soon and get opinions.
