Hey there I am new to all of this but have been reading many build threads. I was inspired to do this by my 3 year old’s new found love for RGB and the PINKGHOSTBUSTER’s RGB packs. Hopefully mine can turn out half as nice as theirs.
Started work yesterday (saturday 2/6/11) and I think I got a good start. I got the Ion Arm/Power Cell, Booster Tube mount, and Generator roughed out.
I am making this out of MDF with the hopes to taking a mold of it and make a shell. I am trying to keep the weight down since my son is only 3.
Any questions or comments are greatly encouraged. I plan to put lights in the power cell, cyclotron, and wand.
Tried to post pics, couldn’t get them to work. If you can help please do. For now please check out pics on my photobucket page: Private Group Photo & Video Sharing
I have a rough set of measurements I found online and I just sized them down, and I am making some of it up as I go.If it turns out great and people like it I may make shells or make the plans available to everyone.
You’re doing it wrong? The pictures I mean. But its looking nice! Better then I could do me thinks… Ima tackle my own soon.
To help you out with the images. On Photobucket it is easy, just click the IMG Code and it will copy it for you, that just past it in here. Easy, yep yep. have to tabs open too, saves going back and forth. Yuh.
As far as the pictures go, here is the process I have been using. I am using a Mac so maybe thats my issue? I have the gbfans tab and my photobucket tab open, i copy the photos address and paste it in to my post, then I highlight it and click the Img button in the Message Body box. If that is the wrong process, some one please help me out.
This is my first build so I really want and need comments, critiques, and questions.
OK so today I got the motherboard, the bumper, and the little cosmetic piece under the booster tube finished. I also glued everything together, drilled guide holes for the u-bolts and gauge.
I began making the thrower for the pack. I am using the DIC sketches from the show and making common measurements off of the pack to get my sizes. I am happy so far. I have the gun box made but I wasn’t really thinking and sealed it up. Does any one out there in GBFansland want to tell me the secret to casting a hollow gun box? This project is for my son and I need everything to be as light as possible.
On a very happy note I picked up 3 ALICE frames from a surplus store here in San Diego for a total for $30. No straps but now i have a frame for the son, me, and my friend who also wants a pack. I also bought 2 from eBay to have on hand just incase.
Ok I promised some pics today. I gave some wood filler a try. That stuff is a pain in the butt! Hopefully after using it some more I will be better with it. Enjoy the pics and please let me know what you think.
3/4 may be a bit big for a 3 year old. I made a 3/4 size pack for my 10yr old this past halloween out of foam and it weighed less than 5 pounds. If you knocked the scale down to 50% you could get the weight around 2 pounds or less depending if you make a scaled frame etc.
I’m using photobucket like some other members do so I don’t think that the problem. I am using a MAC, no idea if that matters. If you right click on the picture box you can open the pic so the link is correct. Or maybe since I am a noobie pics aren’t active for me? Who knows…
ok I know stuff is off center in this picture. I just laid it all together to get an idea of size. Its about 19" long and the pack is about 10 1/2" wid
I made quite a bit of progress today. Sanded down all of my wood putty, patched a couple more areas, sanded again, laid on a thick coat of primer, and since I was a little impatient I primed and painted my 2 tubes (yellow and red).
Well i got a bit done today. Not everything I hoped but enough. I sanded down the primer I sprayed yesterday, found and patched some low spots, and reprimered. There was rain moving in so I didn’t want to take the change of painting it. I also figured out what to use for the grey…wiring loom?..that runs around the yellow tube. I also got the cone mounted inside the red tube and primed the cone part. Lastly I made and glued in 2 pucks for the yellow tube’s ends. sanded them flat and after all the glue dries I will fill any gaps there, prime, and paint.
Its getting close. I am excited to begin the molding process. Has anyone reading this thread ever made a pack mold before? If so any tips you can give a first timer?
If you like what you see in the pictures above. I am planning to make these available for purchase. Either a complete pack or just a shell. They are about 19" in over all length which is perfect for a kid, lady, or smaller man. Either post here or send me a PM and we can discuss it more.
I also went and bought the silicone to make the mold today. I am getting excited. This is going quite a bit faster than I thought it would. I have an A.L.I.C.E frame that I am going to modify to kids size.
