During development there was a lot of argument as to which would be the better machine to have the game on. Many thoyught this would be the PS3 seeing as it was being developed on that system. So, i recieved a copy yesterday on PS3 which enabled me to make a comparison between the two.
So which looks better? Well to start with I am playing it on a 50 inch Samsung plasma screen HD TV. The PS3 through HDMI cable, the X360 is through the component cable in the box with the 360 Elite.
Starting with sound and gameplay. I prefer personally the 360 controller as I have big hands and I can grip it easier but that is a personal choice. The feel of the game has little difference one playing. However the PS3 version has little extra bits in the levels to explore. An example being that the training level in the firehouse you get to go down stairs to the sub basement. The 360 just fades you down to the sub basement. The PS3 has a 5 minute install where the 360 is optional. I haven’t seen any real difference in how the game runs between the systems. The sound on both is the same.
Graphics. There is only one winner here and that is the 360 version. When my wife comments on it you know it is noticable. She knows nothing about games! The 360 version is clearer and more defined than it’s rival. A great example of this is proton streaming a wall. The PS3 version just gives you a black singe across the wall with a flame here and there. The 360 version gives you the singes, flames and also little burning embers in the scorch marks. Little touches like this push the 360 ahead in terms of how the game looks.
Extras. The PS3 has a few vids, which are also present on the Blu-Ray, to go through. The 360 has no extra vids above the in game movies.
Online. Not yet tested tge PS3 online to compare. I’ll update once I have.
Overall, if you have both systems, so far I would have to say go with the 360 version. It just looks better. Not saying the PS3 version looks bad, far from it, it still looks the part itself. The extra little parts of maps to explore on the PS3 are nothing significant, and feel like they were cut from the 360 version so that the PS3 version had more ‘content’ to make up for the lesser visual quality of its rival. But if going down a flight of stairs floats your boat then fair enough! To me it doesn’t really matter.
Played through the 360 version again and yes I did make an error about the extra PS3 bits. Both have the same explorable levels. Apologies there.
I can’t understand the graphically supererior 360 version when the PS£ was supposedly the development model. Though it did raise suspicions with me when they had the press previews in May, and they were all on the 360. A guy at work who is a techno geek did mention that the 360 has more BUS width to handle the extra capacity though, and that may be the reason why it looks better.
Still, it is an excellent game on the PS3.
I’ll add my overall thoughts on the game though.
As a gamer 75%, as a GB fan 90%.
BAD: The cutscenes are choppy in places in erms of editing, poor lip sync, too short.
GOOD: Great fun to play, love the trapping mechanic, the cast and script, good fun online and captures the GB feel perfectly.
Overall I loved it and still love it. Bought my best man it for his pressie and he text me today saying he loves it too. I think that this game is a tester for the engine which has massive potential. Any sequels should be fantastic as there is no real excuse for them not to be. Well done all round.
The reason the graphics are better on the 360 version is, coding is A LOT less complicated. That’s also why the 360 has WAY more exclusives than the PS3, because many developers are having a harder time with the PS3s extensive/complicated software capabilities.
So in other words, the PS3 has the potential to have better graphics than the 360, but because Sony’s format is far too difficult for developers to work with, they either dumb down their games or don’t bother with a PS3 format?
That’s pretty sad. I mean I can’t say I’ve done a direct comparison, but I have always believed that the PS3 was superior when it came to the visuals.
Is it just me? or is this starting to turn into another fucking console war again!?
WHO CARES! Play your game and shut up! I’m sure a patch will be out shortly to fix the graphical errors on the PS3.. For the love of god lets PREVENT starting another immature console war argument!!!
i find the fact that the PS3 looks sub-par strange, Everything time they show the tech of the game off it was on the PS3. also I am pretty sure they said that PS3 was their main platform and it was ported to the others. Just odd.
After seeing first hand the differences, I’m thinking that they were paid to say that the PS3 was the main platform. I have and play the PS3 version and my bro has the 360, and it looks WAAAYYY better on the 360. As much as I hate saying that, it’s true.
