I was given a challenge a while back to updated the lenses of the Ecto goggles to match the accurate lenses used in GB1.
Since then I searched for the proper aluminum components that will work best together and conducted many trials correcting the CNC code each time. All of this was to make the new lenses as light weight as possible while maintaining accuracy.
My goal is not just to update the lenses but also include other new components to in the inside of the frame such as the radar, serial number, etc.
Lets begin.
It all starts with the lower section of the tall lens. I CNC’ed the base of the lens and the knurled ring together in order to make it easier when installing it to the lens and when anodizing.
I then corrected the code to replace the mid section ring of the lens. This ring has a very small “drop down” to the “lip” section of the ring. This detailed is difficult to see in the pictures but it’s there.
Now the we have an idea on how the lens is build, lets take a short cut and skip to the good stuff.
So far there are 7 components to this lens. However, 2 of of them were locked in place prior to this picture (the neck and the top tower).
Here’s what it looks like so far once its put together.
There are several things that I need to correct (one of them is to make the top ring as thin as possible) and other CNC code correction before I can start producing them for sale. Once this lens is completed, I’ll make the short lens.
If anyone has any detail info on the small lens, please feel free to post or send me a PM.
I look forward to completing this build and make this item available for our GB members.
I completed several codes to make the band for the top “lip” as thin as the CNC is able to do it. I was not happy with the results so I tried mixing codes and it worked out. I was able to make the band for the top “lip” very thin (0.025) which is perfect.
Here are some pictures of the progress.
I already started making the code for the short lens so I should have that completed very soon.
