So, I’ve been lurking here for a few months, and I’ll chime in and say that I’ve had a very similar idea, except mine went a bit further than just cramming a laser into the neutrona wand. Granted, it started there, and just kept growing as I kept fantasizing.
First, I want two lasers. One blue, and one red, and I want one to remain solid while the other becomes dispersed, which will kindof resemble the proton stream. Secondly, I wanted to be able to reverse them, giving the effect of a “blast stream” and “capture stream”, though this was not imperative.
The first complication is that the gunbox was way too small for this, so I devised an idea to have the two lasers within the actual pack, and transferred into the wand via fiber optic cable (yes, very possible. Your internet is probably like this).
Next, I wanted the beam to be bright enough to see in a well-lit area, which brought me into the realm of very powerful lasers. While 1 watt blue diodes are easy to come by (thanks to Wicked Lasers and their Arctic), Red diodes of any true strength are less readily available. The solution is that multiple lasers can be transferred through the same fiber optic cable, and collimated into one beam at the end. So, what, a handful of red diodes and a couple of blues? (they lose up to 50% power through the coupling process, anyways)
Okay, so, a handful of powerful diodes is going to require a lot of juice. Batteries are gonna drain in no time like this, so what are my other options? I decided to build a small power generator using pieces of computer harddrives (neodymium magnets and those really good bearings, to be precise). Prototypes of these generators can put out a lot of power, enough to power my lasers (and other goodies like sound and light kits). My current conundrum is figuring out what I’m going to use to drive the generator. RC motors come to mind, but I dunno if they’ll fit into the pack shell. Finding a spot for fuel for the engine wouldn’t be so hard, though I suppose the remaining problem for purists is that I’d end up with a horrendously loud proton pack.
Anyway, enough of my diatribe.
