Building Supplies?

Hey Spook Central,

What Do You Replica Masters Out There Make Traps With? I’ve Seen Balsa Wood, Silicon, Fiber Glass, Heck Even Cardboard (you know who you are). What is the best Building supplies to make a Trap or Pack. Mind you I’m 22 i can work with wood if i can narrow it down to what kind it would work great with me. I have no idea where or how to work with, let alone find sheets of silicon. Fiber Glass, well lets just say no to that one. If you please give me some direction on this subject it would be greatly appreciated

P.S. I would also like to wire either the trap and/or pack so they could light up.

Thanks

If its wood you want to use MDF is the most versatile and sands pretty easily.

Its my favoured material

MDF would be your best bet. It’ll be cheap, provide it with some heft, and comes in suitable thicknesses. I wouldn’t use balsa, or even my favorite for the pack, bass wood. It would be too light, and you’d have to glue several sheets together to get the thickness you need.

And sheets of silicon? Just look outside. That thing you’re looking through is a sheet of silicon. I don’t know why you’d want to make a trap out of glass though.

Did you mean silicone? As in rubber? You’d have to build a trap first out of something else to then make a mold from to make one out of silicone. Unless they sell sheets of it in varying thicknesses, but I’ve never seen such a thing, and have no idea what it would be used for. Which is not to say it doesn’t exist, but it’s porbably difficult to get your hands on, much like sheets of aluminum and plastic.

Ghost Guy - Silicon is the worlds most common metal, and is not glass. Silicone (as in silicates) is used for glass. Silicon is used in metal conductors and alloys. Either way it’s still not really used for building packs.

Also, silicon is not a metal, it is a metalloid, more commonly known as a semiconductor.

Note that when they refer to holding glass together in aquariums, they are referring to the rubbery compound that seals the joins.

Also, have you ever heard the term “glass parking lot”? That refers to the fact that when a nuke is detonated over sand, the sand turns to glass, because sand is made from silicon.

Also breast implants are made from silicone, and they are most certainly not a metal.

Of course, both glass and silicone contain elements other than silicon. But glass is silicon and oxygen, while silicone has a number of other elements. That’s neither here nor there though.

I suppose you could say glass is not silicon, but it’s also most certainly not silicone. Also, if I’m not mistaken, pure silicon, as in a silicon wafer used to make CPUs, is quite brittle, and not something you could possibly build a trap out of.

What?

All I gathered is that we both don’t know what were talking about and are using the same Wiki article to prove nothing. YAY!

Heheh.

All I know is that when people refer to silicone they’re talking about the rubbery stuff, and when they refer to silicon, they’re talking about CPU wafers or glass.

:whatever:

Forget the Silicon or Silicone…use MDF!

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF or MDFB) is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down softwood into wood fibers, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure.[1]

It is made up of separated fibers, (not wood veneers) but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. It is much more dense than normal particle board.

My favorite material is R/C Aircraft grade Birch Plywood (at any good hobby shop).

It comes in thicknesses from 1/16" to 1/2", is very strong, cuts and works cleanly and finishes smoothly with very little prep work (the Proton Wand in my Prop section is made from this).

It’s a little more expensive, but I feel it’s worth it !

MDF!

It’s cheap and smooth

Until you cut it..

AJ, put the chainsaw AWAY!

you know what else is cheap and smooth?

I second the chainsaw comment!

What are you cutting it with? I cut it with an old bent rusty power jigsaw, and it was still smooth as an andoid’s bottom.

With a decent saw it should cut smooth, hell I have even milled the stuff and it ends up smooth…

A little shellac on then cut ends and a once over with sand paper, and it will be nearly as glossy as the factory surface…

New suits?

I’m using birch plywood for my trap, just bought some today!

i am wanting to make a trap and i am wondering what material to make it from…

i thought wood would be too not as good.

if i make it i was thinking aluminium.

can you really tell the difference?

if not, ill just go ahead with wood since its easier to shape by hand.

ASH_ …I would suggest wood for a first trap attempt until you get familiar with the build, aluminum will be very costly. MDF is cheap and easy to work with, just wear a mask when you cut and sand it.

Good to see a supporting membership with only 2 posts

I hate MDF. High Density Cardboard would be a better name for it. If you can use and get it to work with your projects then I give you mad props. It takes some skill to use MDF. I used plywood for my pack. I used a fine grain sand paper to smooth out the grain. I accidentally discovered that “Rust-Oleum Bright Coat Metallic Finish” works great to hide the last bit of grain left on the board. I’m going to be using the same method on my trap.
