'Carpathian'...

Let me go on to say, I know I have a pathetic, and unhealthy addiction with this movie. But what can I say? I freaking love it. With that said – I’ve been trying to figure out a possibility why Vigo Von Homburg Deutschdorf, was also known as Vigo the Carpathian. The little bio seen on GB2 offered very little information, but part of it said that he was a ‘Moldavian Prince’. Well, I looked up Moldavia, and guess what mountain it stands at the eastern side of? The Carpathian Mountains. In an unofficial history of Vigo, it’s very possible he got the title ‘the Carpathian’ from doing something that was evolved with the mountain.

Thoughts?

Sounds good?

According to imdb.com, Wilhelm von Homburg was 6’ 3" (1.91 m) tall. Since his character, Vigo, was the Prince of Moldavia the locals probably nicked named him Vigo the Carpathian because of his intimidating height. Many people from Vigo’s time era (in real life) were given similar names, it is only fitting that this could be the best possible explanation.

I’ve always thought that Vigo was based pretty much on Vald The Impaler.

wasn’t he also known as Vigo the Butch?

I figured when Vigo was old enough and started his evil ways, he massacred all of his people. Thus, since he was the only one left; he got the nickname of “Vigo the Carpathian.”

No, listen.

I’ll clear this up right now to help it make more sense.

Remember when Peter MacNichol first introduced the painting to Dana and Venkman. “This is Vigo! The ruler of Carpathian Moldavia”

Moldavia is on the eastern side of the balkans, correct. Moldavia is not in Carpathia or vice-versa. They’re close, though. Carpathians are of eastern Germanic descent (modern day Austria) , hence the german surname. However, with that era of feudal kingdoms, its possible that a germanic prince in carpathia could have domain over Moldavia (or parts of it) sitting on a throne in Carpathia.

What I’m trying to say is, Vigo was a carpathian feudal monarch that lorded over parts of Moldavia from an empire type of government. Makes sense he was a prince, too. His throne wasn’t in carpathia, but rather, in moldavia because he was a lesser monarch and given a lesser, imperial realm to rule over. Hope this makes SOME kinda sense.

Just as long as someone gives him his Kitty I’m fine with all explainations. With can’t have him suffering from Carpathian Kitten Loss.

Well i don’t think he really existed? Because i’ve checked on the web and every piece of information leads to ghostbusters II, so i guess he was made up. The only thing i don’t understand is who did the oil painting of him. and i’ve also checked for that on the internet, and again every source leads to GH2, i mean it looks like the portrait and the biography was made by the writers. I only can’t image, who would do a masterpiece like Vigo’s painting, just for the movie.

Of course the painting was made for the movie…if Burt Reynolds played Vigo the pairing would look like Burt Reynolds…just like if you think of J. Edgar Hoover you know what’s going to happen

Yes perfect explination. also we can assume that Vigo was made up. Dan Aykroyd is a huge fan of history and paranormal history. im sure there are texts out there that describe Vigo to the letter, but will be describing all germanic prince’s too.

i applaud you Bennyboombatz… :crunch:
