Cutting your pads

Why does that sound awful?

anyway, I’ve had these pads for a couple years, never did anything to them… and they annoy the hell out of me. they’re way too large and I’m not sure how to go about cutting them without having them self destructing on me.

what’s the best way to cut these? what do I do about frayed edges?

i cut mine very easily with scissors. I was very careful, making sure to check them against reference pics both before cutting, during and after.

once they were cut, I singed the edges with a lighter and applied a solution called Dritz Fray Check. I have worn the elbow pads many times and put them through the wash once and there has been no fraying.

some people opt to fold the cut edge in and hem them.

Cut and apply Fray Check

It’s that easy

A note regarding Fray Check and dye… This won’t apply to yours since they are black, but for those with white pads, be sure to dye the pads BEFORE trimming and applying fray check. Any material with Fray Check on it will dye much darker than it normally would, so if you get any errant Fray Check on the outside of the armband it will look messy.

Learned this the hard way- I trimmed, hemmed, and applied Fray Check to the cut edge (now on the inside of the band due to hemming) before dying mine- unfortunately some of the fray check had soaked through to the outside surface, leaving dark spots once I dyed the pads.

So yeah, trim/Fray Check after dye, or be super super careful when applying it.

ok, dumb question #2

where do I buy Fray Check?

For the record, the answers from dumb question #1 has made me feel like a complete idiot by no fault of the people replying… lol… seriously, anyone else have a problem where the answer is SO simple and they just over think the problem so much that the most simple of solutions don’t even occur to them?

Wal-mart! It’s in the craft/sewing supplies section near the needles, I believe.

If you don’t want to mess with fraying, you could always roll them in and glue down a couple of spots on the rolls. that’s what I did with mine.

Spectre - what kind of glue did you use on your pads? Can you post a picture of how they came out?

You could also get some elastic thread and the stitch the excess band underneath as well.

I did this exact thing…fray check…and while I’ve not worn them out much yet, I question the integrity of the hold, just from looking at it…I dunno.
