Here is my first attempt at making a GB clip. This is what we made the puppet for. I apologize if it’s a little dark on some monitors we shot the footage on the fly. Anyway, enough tongue waggin’ here is the link.

WOW, That was pretty damn close to a major studio rendition for the special effects.

I really liked it. next time though don’t use the power up sound twice. Otherwise it was very well done.
I used the start up sound twice quite deliberately actually. No one ever showcases the fact that you not only need to start the pack up but also activate the wand, so I thought I’d be different.

The stream was okay, better than most… I REALLY like the stuff you did with the ghost, especially the flying away bit.

Bump for giggles.
After a long hiatus from all things Ghostbusters I am returning to the scene and started working on my second clip again. If we’re lucky I’ll have something to show in a couple of weeks. So suck in those guts, Dr. Venkman is back!

Seriously, Great job. The stream effect looks good but the ghost and his movement look great! Awesome job.
I liked it, a lot. Especially when you turn off the particle beam, it dissipates instead of just flat out dissapearing. And the fact that you too caught the fact that the “power up” sound is used twice in the movie is also a really nice added detail. The Ghost was fantastic, and surely one of the best puppeting jobs I’ve seen on a fan film, I can wait to see more.
Some notes though: perhaps a larger glow from the tip of the proton gun, the stream just comming from the tip has never worked very well, and even in the movies they give it a nice lens flare to cover it up, with sparks and stuuf comming out, which would be cool.
Lighting. I reccomend to make some on the fly lighting for things like this, use metal coffee cans, install a hallogen lightbulb, if you need to use barn door to focus the light, just use simple card board, and you can buy color gel from any sound and light store. They’d work really well for area lighting, so you’d have front, side and kick lighting that way we could see the details on your gear.
LONGER. I want to see more.
But then again I appear to be a film student snob who may know a lot about movie making technicalities but have very little in the people skills department.

But there is a way to rotoscope in After Effects giving similar results to how it can be done in photoshop, but probably would be easier as you can set keyframes and the the like. Also you can keep all your settings for the stream and just add the animation of movement.
Hope this helps on saving time if you make another but great work!!

Your built in prop effects are great. The FX in post production was pretty damn good for a first try. I loved, loved, loved the puppet. Stick with that style if you make a film.
Thanks for the input, Dan. The lighting has always bugged the hell out of me in this vid, too.That’s the problem with a crew of two. The lighting in the new video clip I’m working on is better, but still not as good as I would like. However I recently found a friend that knows lighting and has worked on several films who will be assisting us in the future.
As for the ‘film student snob’ thing, take it with a grain of salt. From where I was standing you just seemed to be riding that kid pretty hard and the internet can be notorious for misinterpreting what people are saying with out the tone to go with it. So that is why I used the words ‘appear to be’ as opposed to just calling you a jerk or something definite like that. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt as we all have days when we appear to come off too strong. Hell, I’m sure there are a few here who see me a real hard ass.

Hey Pete, could i make a suggestion??? I always wanted to see a Ghosstbuster battle with a ghost the way a fisherman fights with a big fish when they try to pull it out of the wather… I mean, would be great to finally see in action those litle knobs the gun body has, to adjust the stream thicker or lighter so the ghost doesn´t scape.
So if you can -or want- , you could thinck on adding that to your short., either way i´m waiting for it.

Yes, I know, even after a long talk about the lighting in the first clip my roommate/ cameraman still couldn’t frame me with the light on my face… not that anyone wants to see my ugly mugg, lol.
