It never ceases to get a chuckle out of me whenever someone (this time, on Protoncharging) brings up “this wouldn’t happen in the movies”.
Firstly, from that very point you just mentioned, ectomaster.
And secondly, how we’ve supposedly seen the whole extent of the Ghostbusters world in the space of just two hours, or so.
I cannot wait for this series, hopefully this time around it’ll be handled right. The art is certainly a vast improvement, and there’s a sense of movement in the panels that The Other Side seemed to lack.
yeah, i just read tobin and the maze of time too. its a good read.
i see some simularities, but only in the busters going around through seperate time zones. i’m still looking foreward to this (even more after reading Tobin and the maze of time).
I’m going to bet that the female ghostbuster is from the future sent back to bring the boys in grey back together and prevent whatever plans the new ghost had that involved splitting the boys up through time.
all in all… she could be a venkman decendent!
Thats the funny thing about time travel, so much you can do with it.
Grife, people, you don’t know how weird it is to realize I’m not the most negative one here. Some of the comments on GBN and Proton Charging have been brutal. Apparently Aykroyd and Ramis are the only ones allowed to shoehorn in Fifth Ghostbusters.
Chill people, chill.
There’s time travel involved. I don’t think it came from the article itself, but some of the comments around and about suggest (as Ectomaster mentions) that Rachel might be from the future or something, maybe sent to help the originals? That would be a lot better that shoving her into the current team.
It’s all how the character is handled.
That being said, if the story opens with “Ray, Egon, Winston, Venkman, and Rachel get out of the ECTO-1”, she has multiple PhDs and black belts in several martial arts, and she turns Egon into a drooling puddle of hormones the instant he lays eyes on her, I’ll be right there at the front of the line to rip the ■■■■ out of it.
But I’m going to wait and see what actually happens before I condemn it.
I’m glad there’s going to be another try at GB comics, but I’m less than stoked about a time-travel plot that splits up the boys in gray. I have nothing against the occasional time travel tale (aside from the fact that they’re always paradox-riddled and allow for all sorts of deus ex machina bailouts), but I think that level of RGB sci-fi nonsense would be better reserved for an ongoing series, after it had been launched and established. I’m all for the GB’s being involved in ALL manner of paranormal, not just ghouls, believe me…I’d just prefer that IDW do something a little closer to home for these mini-series, rather than try to knock the ball out of the paranormal-twist park. I HATE that I always have to point to Legion, but it’s all we’ve got for comparison…Legion offered a pretty standard spooks+human want New York, GB’s enter and bust storyline, but added enough solid art, good sense of humor, and clear knowledge of the source material to make it work. I wish we could get a monthly GB comic that started out with stories like that, and THEN moved on to the outer fringes of ghostbusting, and into things like time travel or going to the Other Side or what have you…
As I said at gbdoompatrol.com, I’m gonna give this story arch/book more of a chance than I gave “The Other Side”. This one sounds like a fun read and has more going for it than the debut series. Plus, the art looks fantastic! Compared to what IDW started with, this is superb. The proportion is intact and the overall sequential layout is very gritty for a paranormal story. In fact, on the art side of things, its very reminiscent of “The Hunger”.

so am i. who knows… beyond our "champange trashing the series return " phobia. this might turn out to be a good read. so i’m not going to bash this until it has at least breathed air for… three issues and weve seen where its going.
I thought the art was very Paul Pope-esque. If you haven’t seen his work, check it out. He did the very awesome “Batman: Year 100”.
And I thought it was pretty obvious she was from the future. Judging from the differences in her uniform design (gray with red stripes), the differences in her equipment (it looks slightly more streamlined and the lights on it hint at a more futuristic design), and her haircut (not that it isn’t something you might see someone wear now, but it’s not a common haircut and odd hair styles [especially on females] are often used to represent a futuristic visual style). I wasn’t worried for a second. I’d put money on her being sent from the future to help the guys make it through their unfortunate situation. It seems like a very Star Trek-ian plot in light of the new movie. I bet it’ll play out alot like when Kirk meets old Spock.
And while I hope the story delivers (at the least it will be much nicer to look at), I agree with Spengs. Both this and the Other Side (at least it’s general plot) seem very much like stories that should be told after a series is up and going. It’d be smarter to start out telling just great GB stories with challenging “normal” busts, and then get into the sort of “idea stretching” stories down the road after we’re comfortable with the tone and world IDW has established.
An update on my earlier post, on his blog, IDW Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall has given a date of “August” as the new comic’s release. This should make a nice “Summer of Ghostbusters” for us.
Despite its flaws I did enjoy “The Other Side” and look forward to “Displaced aggression” at least IDW is taking the franchise in some interesting directions. Now does anyone else think that the she-buster looks like Micheala Mcmanus from Law and Order SVU.
Given what’s seen in the panels of Venkman so far, are we to assume he has the kowledge to muster up a steam-punkish proton pack? Not to say he’s not smart enough, or hasn’t worked with the equipment long enough. However, venkman never really seemed to care enough to learn the inter-workings of a proton pack, you know? I’m interested in seeing where that goes.
That does seem a little out of character for him.. But then again, tearing demons to pieces with his bare hands doesn’t exactly fit the idea I had for Venkman, either. Meh.. Maybe he ran into some early Spengs relative, and remembered enough about Egon’s “warnings” concerning particle acceleration that he inspiried Wild West Spengs to whip something together?
That’s probably a horrible idea..unfortunately I can see that being the case.. :sigh:
Now that's what the proton streams should look like… not those week, light blue and red streams in The Other Side, proper orange and blue streams of crackling energy!
Damn you Ben, you beat me to it. Scoping Deviantart and saw these bad boys, and I must say I am VERY excited about the Venkman plot atleast. Not much has been revealed of the others just yet. At this point I imagine they’ll take it issue for issue for each charcter, Venkman being the first. We shall see.
