Int. NYU SCHOOL library - daytime
The Camera opens on 2 college student sitting at a table. RAY and PETER are working on writing their Thesis papers for their PhD’s. RAY is writing frantically and PETER is acting more nonchalant on the topic and flipping pages back and forth in a book.
peter
You know what really gets me, Ray?
Ray
(without looking up from his paper)
huh?..
peter
Out of everyone that’s completing their PhD’s, I thought it would be Spengler and not us.
ray
(without looking up)
huh…
peter
well I mean he’s been far more serious on this science ■■■■ than we have right?
INT. bathroom - flashback
EGON is looking at himself in the mirror in his hand we see that he’s holding a Drill and on his right temple we see that he’s drawn on a Black X. EGON studies the X in the mirror and then looks down at the sink counter in front of him. He has a book open about medieval surgery with an image of brain surgery. EGON pulls the trigger on the drill and we hear it start whirling. He looks back up into the mirror and we see PETER, on his way past the bathroom. Stopped, shocked and looking in at him. EGON, likewise, is paused in shock with the drill still whirling in his hand looking back at PETER.
INT. NYU SCHOOL LIBRARY - DAYTIME
Peter
You know most guys do other things when in the bathroom alone instead of trying to drill holes through their heads.
ray
(without looking up)
uh huh…
PETER leans in close to see if Ray will react. PETER looks down at RAY’s book and then back up at him. RAY does not respond. PETER raises his hands up slowly without Ray noticing and Slams them on either side of RAY’s book frightening him. PETER falls back into his chair laughing.
Ray
Ah! What!? What do you want? You realize that these final thesis papers are due in. (looks at his watch) Oh god, 3 Hours.
RAY Goes back to his book.
peter
Yeah yeah (he looks back into his book.)
In the background we here a woman’s scream a woman comes from the basement holding her heart and in obvious fear. A campus officer rushes to her side. PETER and RAY look up at her.
Librarian
(in the distance)
…I don’t know if it had legs but if defiantly had arms because it reached for me!
PETER and RAY look at each other, then slam their books shut and get up and head in her direction. the CAMERA stays on the cover of the book which we can now see is called “Paranormal Investigation and Elimination” with a GHOSTBUSTERS symbol on the cover. MUSIC: The Ghostbusters theme slowly fades in, but does not overpower the talking in the background.
officer
You can’t go down there!
peter
Back off, pal. We’re scient…scienti.
We here the roar from the Librarian Ghost and the Scream from PETER and RAY. Fade to just the Ghostbusters Symbol.
ext. Steps in front of nyu - daytime - 3 years later
EGON, RAY, and PETER are being forced out of the building by the OFFICER. Each of them carry a box of their personal items. They’ve just been fired from their jobs as professors of the University. They yell back and forth with the OFFICER before accepting their fate and sit at the base of the steps. the OFFICER goes back inside the building.
PETER
(yelling at the OFFICER)
Yeah!? Well who needs ya! Dirty Rotten… (He turns to EGON and RAY) So we’re screwed.
RAY
Tell me about it. No Jobs. No Income. The University was great. They gave up money and resources for our research and we never had to produce anything. You guys have never worked outside of college. They expect results.
RAY and PETER sit on the steps in despair. Peter reaches into his box and pulls out a bottle of whiskey and takes a drink. Hands it to RAY and he drinks as well. The CAMERA shows EGON with a laptop running calculations.
PETER
Hey Egon! You want some of this?
EGON
Unlike you, two. I’ve thought ahead and made a plan just in case of such an emergency.
PETER
Plan? What Plan?
EGON reaches into his box and pulls out a few pieces of paper and hands them to RAY and PETER. They look it over and see plans for Proton pack and Ghost Traps.
RAY
Actual Ecto-Capture and Containment Units? You perfected this?
PETER
Paranormal Investigation and Elimination. That would be the business of the century! The Franchise rights alone could make us rich beyond our wildest dreams.
RAY
Egon, These plans would take an incredible amount of money to build where are we going to find that?
EGON
The school already provided it. I built these weeks ago. Technically, though, they belong to the school.
The three exchange glances with a mutual understanding of what must be done.
INT. NYU science lab - night
All three of the members are dressed in black and slowly picking up the Proton packs when the Lights are switched on.
OFFICER
Hey! What are you doing!?
RAY
Scatter!
The three run in all different directions and off Camera.
INt. Ghostbusters HQ - daytime
Montage Begins.
We see EGON making modifications to the Proton Packs.
Ray drives up the White Car.
RAY and PETER make modifications to it turning it into the ECTO-1.
RAY is trying on the Proton Pack with sensors on his head and EGON’s is at his laptop taking Reading. RAY fires a stream and the Proton pack knocks him off his feet. EGON looks up and back down to type in notes.
Finally we see PETER sitting with JANINE and asking her questions as she nonchalantly does her nails. PETER looks wide eyed at her and then down at her resume and stands up and offers to shake her hand to say she hired. She stops filing and looks up at him.
Montage Ends.
int. Ghostbusters HQ - nighttime
PETER walks in and up to JANINE who is sitting at her desk and reading a magazine.
PETER
Hey JANINE. Any Calls?
JANINE
(without looking up)
No…
PETER
Any Messages?
JANINE
(without looking up)
No…
PETER
Any Jobs?
JANINE
(looks up for a second and then back down at her Magazine)
No…
PETER
Something about this seems familiar…
The phone rings. JANINE sits there reading her magazine. PETER looks at JANINE and then at the phone. Then back at JANINE. The phone continues to Ring.
PETER
(failing to hide his words while coughing)
You’re so fired.
JANINE picks up the line and give PETER an annoyed look.
JANINE
Ghostbusters, what do you want?.. (Her Expression turns to shock)You what?.. You have?.. No kidding?.. Well give me the address… (She reaches for a pen and pad)
PETER
(excited)
Boys! Boys! We’ve got one!
INT. Dana Barrett’s apartment building - FRONT DOOR - night
EGON, PETER, and RAY enter the apartment building. RAY and PETER are dressed in flight suits with the Proton packs strapped to their backs and Egon is carrying backs full of computer equipment.
PETER
Hey! Anybody seen ghosts!?
The Apartment MANAGER walks up to them.
MANAGER
Thank you for coming so quickly, the tenants are starting to ask questions and I’m running out of answers. I have to ask are you.. for real?
PETER looks back at EGON and RAY. EGON and RAY shrug. PETER looks back at the MANAGER
PETER
Yes?
MANAGER
(exhales)
Well It’s the 13th Floor. There have always been stories but it’s never ever been this bad.
PETER becomes distracted and looks off at DANA BARRETT. A Woman that’s frantically talking on her phone to her mother.
MANAGER
uh… Sir?.. Sir? Mister uh. (He looks at the name tag) Mr. Venkman?
PETER
Actually that’s Dr. Venkman. will you excuse me just a moment. (He looks back at EGON and RAY) Boys?
PETER walks off in DANA’s direction The MANAGER continues talking to RAY and EGON.
INT. DANA BARRETT’S APARTMENT BUILDING - LOBBY - NIGHT
PETER walks up to DANA.
PETER
Excuse me, miss. I can’t help but notice that you in some kind of distress. May I be of assistance?
DANA looks at PETER and pauses for a minute.
DANA
Mom can I call you back? (She hangs up the phone) What? What are you supposed to be some kind of Cosmonaut?
PETER
No. Ghostbuster actually.
DANA
Are you for real?
PETER
wha..? Of course. Why does everyone ask that? (Peter motions back toward the MANAGER)
We see that RAY and EGON are now awkwardly scanning the MANAGER with PKEs and sensors.
DANA
Oh. I’m sorry it’s just.. I’m Dana Barrett. So you can get rid of ghosts? I’ve had this problem in my kitchen. In the fridge there’s this voice I swear it says Zuul.
PETER
(Not really paying attention)
Wow. That is weird. I’d love to go your apartment and check you out.
DANA
I..
PETER
(Hits himself in the head)
I mean go back to your apartment and check IT out. Cool?
DANA
Well, I guess… OK.
EGON and RAY are now standing next to the elevators and call over to PETER
RAY
Hey Pete! Come on we’re going up to the 13th floor
DANA
- That’s my floor
PETER
Well then it all works out. Come on.
PETER and DANA walk over to the elevators to meet EGON and RAY.
INT. DANA BARRETT’S APARTMENT BUILDING - LOBBY ELEVATORS - NIGHT
DANA and PETER walk up to the EGON and RAY who have already pressed the button and are waiting on the elevators.
EGON
Keep your Ear Pieces in. I’ll monitor you from down here. If I notice and fluctuation in PKE activity I’ll keep you updated.
The doors to the elevator open and everyone walks in. As the doors close PETER throws EGON something. EGON catches it and hold it up to show that PETER thew him a Crunch bar. EGON smiles and then walks towards a corner of the lobby.
INT. Dana Barrett’s apartment building - INSIDE ELEVATOR - night
Everyone stands a little awkwardly crowded. DANA stands behind RAY and PETER who are in the front t part of the elevator.
RAY
Well this is it. You know I just realized that we’ve never really had a proper test for this equipment.
DANA
So you’ve never done this before?
PETER
What? No. Ray’s kidding here aren’t you Ray? (punches RAY in the arm.)
RAY
Oh. Oh Right. This has to got to be what? our 30th job?.. I mean why worry? we’re just wearing unlicensed nuclear accelerators on our backs. Switch me on?
PETER reach over and we hear the Proton Pack power up. DANA and PETER both scoot slowly to press against the other side of the elevator.
INT. DANA BARRETT’S APARTMENT BUILDING - 13th Floor hallway - NIGHT
PETER, DANA and RAY walk out of the elevator and into the hallway.
PETER
OK I’m going to Take Dana here back to her apartment and check her out.
Everyone awkwardly looks at PETER.
PETER
(laughing)
Why does that keep happening?
ray
OK. Stay in Contact I’m going to be on the look out for the ghost.
RAY walks away being overly cautious, clinging to walls and jumping out mission impossible style.
PETER
You know his mother dropped him when he was little. Tragedy.
PETER and DANA walk in the opposite direction towards DANA’s apartment.
INT. DANA BARRETT’S APARTMENT BUILDING - int front of dana’s apartment - NIGHT
PETER and DANA approach her door. PETER does a quick look in either direction pointing his proton wand.
PETER
OK The Area’s secured. Shall we?
A squealing noise comes over the ear piece.
PETER
ah! Egon! What the hell was that?
Egon
(Over the Ear Piece)
A Psychokinetic interference. I think Ray found it.
DANA goes to unlock her door.
peter
great great. I’ll be right there.
PETER makes a motion to walk into the room and DANA hold out a hand to stop him.
DANA
I’ve left a few things out give me just a second before you come in.
PETER
sure I - (He’s cut off when she slams the door shut.)
PETER waits outside the apartment impatiently. A Green glow building just off camera. PETER doesn’t notice it at first but slowly turns toward the glow. His Eyes grow wide but other than that shows no signs of panic. He raises a hand and touches his ear piece.
PETER
Calling Ray. Come in, Ray.
RAY
(Over the Ear Piece)
Venkman! I saw it! I saw it!
PETER
It’s Right here, Ray. It’s looking at me.
RAY
(Over the Ear Piece)
Ugly little spud isn’t it?
We hear a small growl.
PETER
I think he can hear you, Ray.
RAY
Stay calm. He can’t hurt you.
The growl turns into a Roar and Venkman starts to scream. DANA pokes her head out of the door and sees the green glow then slams the door closed again.
INT. DANA BARRETT’S APARTMENT BUILDING - 13TH FLOOR HALLWAY - NIGHT
RAY is holding his hand to his Ear Piece.
RAY
Venkman! Hold on!
RAY runs down the hall towards DANA’s Apartment.
INT. DANA BARRETT’S APARTMENT BUILDING - in front of dana’s apartment - NIGHT
PETER is on the ground and tossing from side to side. He’s covered in Slime. RAY runs to his side.
PETER
He slimed me.
RAY
That’s Great! Actual Physical Contact!
EGON
(Over the Ear Pieces)
Save some for me, Ray. But it looks like it’s not gone.
RAY Stands up and turn toward the Green light. We see Slimer floating before Ray sticking his tongue out.
RAY
Why you little. Take this!
RAY fires a Proton Stream at Slimer grabbing him. PETER gets up and fires as well
EGON
(Over the Ear Pieces)
Whoa! Careful! Don’t cross the streams!
PETER
What? Why!?
EGON
(Over the Ear Pieces)
Imagine the entire planet stopping and every molecule in your body exploding instantaneously.
PETER
That bad huh?
Ray
OK Hold him Pete. I’m gonna put the Trap Down. Don’t look at the trap.
RAY throws the trap onto the floor below Slimer
PETER
I looked at the trap, Ray…
RAY
Hold it!
A beam of light shoots form the trap and Slimer is pulled him. RAY and PETER shut off their Proton Streams.
PETER
Did we do it?
RAY
It’s in there!.. We did it!
DANA is peaking her head out from her door.
DANA
Is it gone?
PETER
Is it gone? Of course it is ma’am because we (PETER motions toward Ray and himself as RAY picks up the trap) are professionals.
DANA lets out a sigh of relief and slowly opens the door fully.We cannot see into her apartment it’s totally black inside.
DANA
you know, it’s weird. I don’t remember anything green in my fridge it looks like this dog that was just saying Zu-
DANA is cut off with Demon Arms Grab her over the mouth and body and pull her into the darkness. The Door slams shut on it’s own. We hear a small scream from her before the door loudly slams.
PETER
(simultaneously with RAY)
DANA!
PETER and RAY rush to the door and pull it open. Inside we don’t see black nor an apartment. It leads to the roof.
RAY
Uh… Egon?
EGON
It looks like some sort of. Temporal Rift? A Tear in the Fabric of Space maybe.
PETER and RAY walk through.
EXt. dana’s apartment building - roof - night
PETER and RAY walk cautiously onto the Roof. They both look around for DANA.
RAY
This is a huge apartment
PETER
Yeah her rent must be killer.
Thunder is heard behind them and DANA is on top of the roof. Lightning hits her and she begins to glow.
EGON
(Over the Ear Piece)
You know I’ve done some searching, and I think I know what this Zuul entity is.
INT. DANA BARRETT’S APARTMENT BUILDING - LOBBY - NIGHT
EGON is on his computer console and on the screen we see a picture of an ancient drawing of Gozer.
EGON
(Reading form the Screen)
It looks like Zuul was the gatekeeper to a Sumerian Deity call Gozer.
PETER
(Over the Ear Piece)
Deity… like a god?
Egon
More like a demon. Looks like he would demand sacrifices of blood on spires just like this apartment building we’re on now.
EXT. DANA’S APARTMENT BUILDING - ROOF - NIGHT
RAY
In other words, Peter, your girlfriend lives in the middle of spookcentral.
The Glowing DANA gives off a Roar and then transforms into the Woman form of GOZER.
PETER
No Problem. We just took down a ghost! We got this! A Demon isn’t too much different right?
RAY
Yeah!
PETER
(pushing Ray)
Yeah! Get her Ray!
RAY now looks unsure and panicky as he looks back at PETER. RAY takes a few steps forward. GOZER takes a step close to RAY looking intently at him.
GOZER
Are You a God?
RAY looks back at PETER. PETER shrugs. Ray looks back at GOZER.
RAY
No?
GOZER
Then Die!
EXT. DANA’S APARTMENT BUILDING - STREET LEVEL - NIGHT
We see a massive explosion when looking up at roof of the building.
EXT. DANA’S APARTMENT BUILDING - ROOF - NIGHT
We see the edge of the building for a moment before a hand comes up. PETER pulls himself back onto the roof form the edge and RAY does so next to him.
PETER
(out of breath from pulling himself up)
Ray… If someone asks you if you’re a god, you say Yes!
RAY
(Also out of breath)
OK.. This chick is toast!
RAY and PETER stand up and look around.
RAY
Where’d she go?
GOZER
(A disembodied voice form the sky)
SUBCREATURES!GOZER THE GOZERIAN, GOZER THE DESTRUCTOR, VOLGUUS ZILDROHAR, THE TRAVELER HAS COME. CHOOSE AND PERISH.
RAY
What!?
PETER
I don’t know, Egon?
EGON
(Over the Ear Piece)
If I understand correctly, she’s saying that since you’re going to be sacrificed anyway. You choose the form of your destructor.
PETER
Oh Cute. Ray clear your head! Don’t think of anything. Then we’ll see what she’s -
The ground below them shakes.
EGON
(Over the Ear Piece)
What happened? I thought you weren’t thinking of anything
PETER
I didn’t think of anything!
EGON
(Over the Earpiece)
Nor did I.
PETER slowly turns to RAY. RAY looks back frightened and ashamed.
RAY
I-I’m sorry I tried to think. I tried to think of something that could never hurt us.
PETER
What!? What did you think of?
The Ground shakes again.
EGON
(Other the Ear Piece)
Oh.. Oh no this is bad.
EXT. new york cityscape - night
We see the STAYPUFT MARSHMALLOWMAN stomping through the streets of New York.
EXT. DANA’S APARTMENT BUILDING - ROOF - NIGHT
PETER and RAY are staring off toward the STAY PUFT MARSHMALLOWMAN.
PETER
Huh… There’s something you don’t see everyday.
Ray
Oh my God. How in the world are we supposed to stop that thing!? It’s huge!
INT. DANA BARRETT’S APARTMENT BUILDING - LOBBY - NIGHT
EGON is frantically searching over his computer and books that he has with him.
EGON
Just a second. I’m thinking! I’m thinking!
EXT. DANA’S APARTMENT BUILDING - ROOF - NIGHT
The Roof shakes again.
RAY
Think faster, Egon. He’s getting closer…
Egon
(Over the Ear Piece)
I’ve got it. Cross the Streams!
PETER
Whoa whoa! Egon, you said Crossing the Streams was bad.
EGON
(Over the Ear Piece)
If we can pack enough power into the Rift that allowed Gozer through then it should force her back. It’s the only chance we’ve got.
PETER
You’re going to kill us, Egon, and you’re going to kill that nice lady, Dana Barrett, that was going to hire us.
RAY
What choice do we have, Peter?
The Roof Shakes again. PETER and RAY look at each other and exchange worried glances. PETER takes a deep breath and points his proton wand at the door.
PETER
See you on the other side, Ray.
Ray Points his Proton Wand at the Door as well.
RAY
It’s been a pleasure, Dr. Venkman.
Both RAY and PETER fire at the same time at the door. We see the face of the STAYPUFT MARSHMALLOWMAN peek over the edge of the roof and Roar. PETER and RAY nearly touch the tips of the proton wands together as the cross the proton streams.
EXT. DANA’S APARTMENT BUILDING - STREET LEVEL - NIGHT
A Large Explosion is seen from the top of the building. Rubble begins to fall to the Street Below.
EXT. DANA’S APARTMENT BUILDING - ROOF - NIGHT
PETER and RAY lay motionless on the Roof. The CAMERA zooms in close on PETER’s face. He takes a sudden deep breath and sits up coughing.
PETER
(Coughing)
Woo! Now that was something. Ray! You OK?
PETER swings an arm at RAY punching him in the side. RAY sits up coughing as well.
RAY
(coughing)
Are we dead?
EGON
(Over the Ear Piece)
Far from it Ray. It looks like we did it. Gozer is gone.
RAY
All Right!
RAY and PETER exchange a high five. The CAMERA pulls back and we see a woman’s hand poking up form the rubble.
RAY
(despaired)
Oh… Oh Pete I’m so sorry.
RAY puts a consoling hand on PETER’s Shoulder. The woman’s hand starts to wave.
PETER
Hey! HEY!
PETER and RAY rush over the the Rubble and pull it to the side. pull DANA out of the rubble
DANA
What happened?
PETER
Do I have a story for you!
PETER and DANA walk off the roof together. RAY looks out on the roof at the city scape and raises his hands above his head.
RAY
I LOVE THIS TOWN!
Fade to Black and Fade in Ghostbusters Theme.
Its interesting you kept a lot of the same lines. While you do “update” the script, there isn’t really much update in the tech, which is one of the reasons I love the movie. Other than the walkie-talkies, its all the same.
