Ok so Ive always thought the slime blowers were really cool, and I was thinking about some of the ones I saw that you guys built. And I was also thinking about how I could make one that actually works, and although its pricey I figured it out .
As you walk around some grocery stores you may see fire extinguishers that have a chrome finish. These are typically what we referr to in the fire service “cans.” No fancy chemicals just compressed water. Something we or that anyone with an air compressor can service in house. It has two main parts, the body and the trigger system. Once it is empty you unscrew the trigger assembly from the main body, fill it with water, replace the trigger then with an air compresser and standard bike/car tire attatchment add air untill the gauge reads full. That simple!
Now… heres the great thing, foam cans. It wont look like slime but Im sure it will impress anyone else who just has a styrafoam or cardboard blower with cheap lights on it (no offense intended to thoes who work hard on them though). A foam can is the same exact thing only with the water you add a foam adative called AFFF… basically its like soap. The only other difference is the nozzel has a air inductor on it.
The dimensions are roughly 24 1/2" High x 9" (unit) width x 7" diameter.
Heres the great part though… you dont have to use these cans. With some knowhow you can use almost anything, if you can find an air compressor with rough dimensions of either the blower of one of the three tanks your in luck. My buddies and I rigged up an air compressor to dispense a couple of gallons of foam as part of a prank/booby trap to another fire station.
The downfall… AFFF foam gets expensive. But based on some things Ive read you guys have a pretty good investment in this.
Heres a link to a place you can buy a foam can… maybe you can pick one up and play with it for ideas and inspiration.
You can’t compress water. That’s the air you’re compressing.
But if you can fill it with water, or foam, then why not slime? I posted a recipe for slime in the tutorials section. It’s made with guar gum, a commonly available food product.
Add a tiny bit of red food coloring to that, and maybe some flour* to make it more opaque and lighter to get that pink color and fill your cannister with that instead. The guar gum slime can be made as runny as you need it to be to get it to spray out of the nozzle. And just one 8oz bottle of the stuff would be more than enough to fill a cannister of that size with slime.
Just don’t let the slime sit around unrefrigerated, it will mold after a few days. And it will thicken a lot.
(But not corn starch, as that probably will turn clear when you wet it. I know you use that in stews so that the stew thickens but doesn’t turn into an opaque gravy.)
I had a similar epiphany at work. We use a 25 gallon machine on wheels, which basically holds 90% water, 10% chemical (usually similar to dish soap). There’s a valve on the end of the nozzle, which is connected to roughly 6 feet of hose; when we connect our air line, and turn it on, it comes out like white “slime”. It got me thinking that if someone was serious about developing a slime blower, they could have the large middle tank be a functional air compressor, or air tank, and the two side tanks be a water/something wix, and when you pull the handle on the blower, viola!!! Slime Blower!
i had the same idea, only utilizing 2 tanks of co2 to propel slime out of the main tank, but people said “it’d be to heavy” “it’d break your back” , that’s the idea, functioning equipments SUPPOSED to be heavy! grow some spine people and suck it up, in the name of awesome !
I too had stumbled upon this idea, but never thought impliment it, as a mess would be inevitable. Its a good idea, but like most things, needs to be tested and perfected. :walterpeck:
The one functional slime thrower I’ll eventually work on will consist mostly of a lawn water sprayer with a bunch of gadgets, pipes, and wires rigged to it so that it has the authentic/realistic look too it. Seeing as it already resembles some form of slime/water tank, it can be pulled off with fairly reasonable ease. And the fact that it is a sprayer gives it that nice touch of realism, only problem is it’s water, but green or red food die easily takes care of that, with the foam additives or soap to give it a slime effect.
Best thing is they are pretty much already set up like a back pack and are fairly lightweight, so it should be a pretty easy concept. I think the only downside is finding stuff to put on the gun part of the sprayer. Try making it seem lightweight yet look like its high tech gadgetry.
During my planning phase of my slime blower I thought about making it functional. The method I found that would work best and be able to be used on low voltage (small batteries with less weight) would be to use a small electric pump similar to what is used on a sprayer for an ATV (These can be found at Farm and Fleet and Theisen’s stores). Then just use a smaller tank and if you want you can hide it in the big tank to limit the amount of slime you have but then also limit the amount of weight so you can actually carry the dang thing.
I have tested the sprayer system out but decided to drop the idea because of the thought that if i have this loaded and go to a bar or to a party and accidental fire it off then there might be alot of mad people.
