Is weathering goggles necessary? If you look at the screen grabs, the goggles seems in mint condition. Do we really need to make them looked used?
I think thats more of a personal preference, I think props should look used for authenticity but thats just how I like it. I don’t think the ghostbusters had any “new” equipment since it was all pieced together and likely bought surplus so there was bound to be wear.

This! Spot on i think. It’s all down to taste, I am in the same camp as Colin though. I like my gear to look a litlle weathered with bumps and knocks here and there
The equipment starts out in fairly new condition because it hadn’t been used until the Slimer bust. But by the end of the movie they have been on a montage of busts, fallen down a hole in the street, been blown up, etc, and the packs are covered in dust and marks. I think most people weather their gear to make it look lived-in and not factory-direct every time, like the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek.
The real goggles frames are made of plastic so, no, you shouldn’t weather them, that’s why they look so new in the movies. The lenses are a different story though.
