Hey all. Been thinking about this for about a month now, and two weeks ago, after reading various posts from everyone, decided to make my own. After realizing (it didn’t take long), I couldn’t afford to build a great pack, I decided to go ahead and make a junk pack like several people from the board have. Here are the early pictures, taken during the last week of August. I have more updated pictures and they will be included in the next few posts if there is interest in it. Oh yeah, hopefully it will have functional lights, too. At least on the pack.
I’d like to note that I should have previewed the post before I posted it cause the html came out like poo. And backwards. The bottom of the post is the beginning of the pictures and works it’s way up. Enjoy!
Considering you are using found parts.. it has the beginings of an incredible pack!
I have seen fiberboard painted black with photocopier toner cartridges hot glued to it, and nylon straps as the arm straps called ‘proton packs’ last halloween.
Ok 1st its real nice looking.. now what did you use for the cyclotron.. is it a tupperware containter? whered you get it.. I wouldnt mind building a 2nd pack for friend.. but dont have alot of time.. this looks good..
If you are calling this a junk pack, I can’t wait to see when you create a “real” pack . Seriously, this is looking good. A lot better then my first attempt at a pack. I can’t wait to see the finished product. Kudos
Everything I’ve bought for the pack was either picked up at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, or Advanced Auto Parts. Except for the Alice Pack. Being in the military has it’s perks on finding things like that. The cyclotron is just a microwave dish topper thing from microwave, which I’ve included a picture of. It’s almost perfect shape and dimensions as I am going off of Stefan’s plans.
Looking excellent so far. I have the same auto-store lighting on my powerbar in my pack. It’s amazing how close to movie accurate you can get if you just spend some time figuring it out.
You got those lights at an auto store? What are they called? I’m lookin for some easy lighting to put on the packs I’m working on. BTW, lookin pretty damn good for a “junk” pack.
For a “Junk Pack” It sure is gonna kick my “Great Pack”'s ass because yours has lights, those are awesome, what’d you use for the power cell? And which parts store was it from?
I picked up both of the lights from Advanced Auto. The power cell light is just a scrolling blue LED light. The packaging is a bit misconceiving as it doesn’t scroll like the GB lights scroll. It moves up and down in bursts of three LED’s. But it’s good enough for my first “junk pack”. And the red LED’s are just an effects kit. The red’s were about $8 and the blues were $15, give or take. The reds come wired together with a small 8v battery (I think, I’ll check later when I get home from work to be sure), but there is only three. So I’m going to buy another one, take an LED from it, wire it all together with the powercell light, and then run it up the tube to the wand and wire it into a radio shack switch, as the switches in Advanced Auto seem to be a bit oversized (ie: ridiculously big).
Yeah if you search through the radioshack drawers, you’ll find switches that are almost perfectly matched in looks and size, I would know I use them on my gun.
Yeah. That’s what I discovered when I checked out a local Radio Shack last week. I havn’t bought the switches yet though, as I’m not to that phase of my pack. It’s almost ready to be painted now. I just need to finish the gun-mount, EDA Box, cyclotron and bumper. Then the wand needs to be made, which, in all honesty, looks quite daunting.
Regardless of how well it turns out – and judging by the photos, it looks hot, to use the parlance of our time – all you have to do is drape that Terrible Towel over it and all the yinzers in town will think its the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Well, I can now finally say I have shed blood, sweat, and tears (well, not so much the sweat or the tears, to be honest) over the junk pack. Sorry havn’t updated in a while, I only work on it for an hour or two every couple of nights. It’s coming along well, all I need to do is build the gunmount, the bumper, and attach the cyclotron. But yes, back to the original point of this post, beware exacto knives. They like to bite ya when you least expect it. I might have to go get stitches for this one…but then I couldn’t play hockey tomorrow night. I need to find some super glue and duct tape…
OK. I’ve just about wrapped it up. I cut the cyclotron and the other thing. All I’ve really left to make is the bumper for the pack. Once I get back from the ER I will take some pics of the pack, with the lights, and post them along with a picture or two of my finger. Think I may have gotten a tendon or mayhaps some nerves. Can’t tell yet. Hope you guys enjoy!
