Kids Size Proton pack FINISHED!

I broke my ankle 4 months ago so I’ve been in bed most of the time, now that i have some mobility I decided I wanted a project that wasn’t very hard and that would help me to relax and kill some time, I wanted to make a protonpack so bad, but it would be too hard to work on an adult size one, so instead My son will get the benefit of my injury since i will make a pack for him!

I did a search and run into 5 year old threats on the forum , and i got really inspired from KC Ghostbusters 3/4 scale pack, his turned out amazing . Slimer 01 , Nicknack and Texaco Kid where also source of inspiration! Special thanks to Garee and his budget pack threat that also is helping me out for decisions in this build.

I made the mb out of strong thick cardboard, added a couple of coats of wood glue and its super hard like plastic, for this build im using eva (ish) foam, to make the pack light for my boy… its been a couple of days of work and i like how its coming along.

Great start!

THANKS man!

I was able to make a bit of progress yesterday, Ion Arm ready to sand , i covered it with sparkle paste.

I’m not happy with my cyclotron , i will try to get a baking tray or something less bulky.

I worked on the bumper using thick cardboard, working on the borders first, and adding a stripe or cardboard hot glued by the 2 sides (you can see the pics in order) then covered them with wood glue, after that I cut out eva foam to fill in the cardboard walls and cut out 2 shape “ears” for where the ion knob will go, then covered that with epoxy… sanded it out…

Here is what i have so far, still plenty stuff to do, i think I still have a month’s work ahead of me. BUT I like it, this is very relaxing and my kid is looking at the progress and he likes what he sees!

I plan on adding lights too but there is still a lot of time till i reach to that phase .

More!

Thanks, I was able to paint it yesterday, I noticed i made the ion arm too thick, i have to slice it up a bit . No biggie.

Still waiting for the round pan for the cyclotron.

Ion knob ready to be installed as so are the clipart valves! That silver square is the v hook base… soon to be secured on the gun mound block…

Looking good, but you may want to swap your Ion Arm upside down.

Hahahaha good call. Thank God nothing is glued yet! Lol

Hey guys, still waiting for some stuff to come from china in the mail , hopefully it will arrive this week, in the meantime i glued most of the stuff together in the pack. Im ready to start working on the alice frame. THe mother board is made out of thick cardboard reinforced with wood glue so its pretty strong, but i hope it doesn’t break… we’ll see

Also I started to work on the thrower, the body is made out of the same thick cardboard, with pvc handles. I added a layer of wood glue so it’s pretty strong, will cover with wood filler and then sand the edges to give the round corner. Hope it turns out ok. I’m happy with the results so far.

Forgot to mention that the hand grips are from those fuel injection bottles (thanks Paranorman!)

This is absolutely fantastic! I am a lifelong Ghostbusters fan and to see half the stuff that is being created in here has given me the itch to create something for my sons and myself. Great Job, can’t wait to see it done. Im going to get started on my own very shortly. Thanks for the motivation and the inspiration to get off my lazy behind and do it.

what an awesome build!

Thanks a lot man! Positive reinforcement really helps to finish this project! and believe me, some times i think i’m done, but then i look at the reference pics and realize there is something i missed , so i have to go back and re-do stuff lol!

So

Thanks man!

So I worked hard here and there during the last couple of days and I think the thrower is … well… done… kind of. Still need to add lights and switches, but the shape is there., im happy with how it looks, and considering is made out of cardboard, plastic and some balsa wood, its SUPER SOLID! wood glue is magic! lol

Here is a pic of my 11 year old son holding it, its right in scale he says hes comfortable with it, once i install the tip of the gun it will look longer…

Can’t wait to paint it up!

Hope you guys like it!

Ok guys I finished adding the lights on the wand, Still need to install the switches and the banjo things…Waiting for the heat shrink tubing to arrive, but I made this video just to show off the light system, not screen accurate but sweet none the less. lol

Wow, that is a pretty cool light show. For the purpose and build of the pack, it looks appropriate and fantastic!

The lights are great. How and where did you find them? I’m actually making my build now for my son out of foamboard. It’s coming along but the lights are giving me a tough time. I need help with the lights. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Looks fantastic like I said. Can’t wait to see the whole thing completed.

Thanks man, i feel the same way, its a kids pack and the dif colors the lights have are really kids friendly lol. When i showed it to my son he was like “WOW ITS A CHRISTMAS SHOW!!!” haha he wanted me to make it shoot real streams! hahhaha.

Hey man thanks a lot for your feedback, please don’t forget to post pics of your Kids pack when you are done!

THe lights i used for the wand are these light “sticks” …

You can see on the bottom right corner of the picture, there is the battery compartment and the on of switch, you slide that out and you will have the leds ready to use, be careful with the wires since they are not soldered very well. You could buy these light sticks online but i found them at my local dollar store, you could also find them at any party supplies store!

Today I’m making the alice frame and tomorrow hopefully i will get the rest of the parts to finish it. I want to go to comicon this sunday and my son is very excited about it!

Got the frame and straps from a back pack , need to paint them both to be more like the real ones,

Finally got the stuff i was waiting for , so its 85% done , some pics of the frame attached on the pack…

I was able to finish the morning before Comicon ! Its incredible how hard building one of these things is! So I made this shaky video to show it off! the lights on the pack are temporary till i find a better option…
