No reinforcing needed. So far everythign I have made with this foam is actualy quite strong and firm. What I am going to have to do once my alice frame comes in the mail is replace part of the foam mother Board with wood to help hold it to the frame and also put a piece of wood behind the gun mount box to hold the thrower.
Once the frame comes and I cut the MOBO a bit I may reinforce with some more foam we will see. Alice frame should be here next week.
Went to the city today and picked up some black gloves, unfortunately that was all I was able to find for my costume, but I did find a cool light up led sword for a dollar at a thrift store that I am hoping might be usefull.
Ok so here is an update. I have had to reinforce the mother board, It just bent when I put it on the alice frame. So I cut the main part out of the foam one had done and slipped in a wooden one. I also then needed to reinforce where the particle thrower will be held on the gun mount box.
Please can someone help me, I have looked and obviously missed it becasue I know it must have been posted somewhere. How thick of tube do I need for the proton gun, is it 3/4 tubing, I hope so I have some 3/4 inch abs pipe.
Ok so I tried making a gun last night, it was ok but not great. So I tired something different.
I had recently (yesterday) taken the speaker out of an old small speaker from a surround sound kit. The casing that I was left with looked like it might be of some use so I kept it, little did I realise I would be using it so soon.
Ok so I just ordered a sound board from Crix (nice piece of work) I havent recieved it yet, but I have been trying to figure out how to have the sounds coming from seperate speaker, I PMed Crix and he said I would have to order two, unfortunately I can not afford that. So I have been playing around with this idea, I can not test it until I get the sound board, but the theory is correct. I think.
Ok so I pinted the proton pack tonight, I applied silver paint first then once that was dry I did the toothpaste trick, then painted the whole thing black, after a few coats and once it was totaly dry I removed the toothpaste. It is the first time i have tried the toothpaste trick on foam and it worked pretty well I think.
Oh sorry, The toothpaste trick is a trick a lot of people use who are building clonetrooper armor, Something I picked up over at clonetroopers.net, basicaly here is what you do. Spray the item you are building with the base colour, in this instance you want a metal silver colour, then decide where the thing ou are building would get rubbed or damaged, apply toothpaste DON’T put it on too thinly, you want to apply it like you would on your toothbrush. Then start painting the next colour, again in this instance black. Once the you have done all the coats of black you need wait for it to dry and then rub off the toothpaste, it will reveal the silver underneath and give the whole thing the look of paint peeling and being scratched off. Some times people add extra colour, for example, base silver, then add toothpaste then paint it grey or black then add more paste ontop off previous paint and maybe in a few other places, then apply final colour then once dry rub it off and you are left with the look of multiple layers of paint peeling off.
I find especialy with clonetrooper armor it looks better then painting the armor and adding buff marks after, gives it a more real look when you look closely, you can see that the paint is chipping off to reveal the base colour father then telling that the scuff marks are added after.
BTW, I tried that DAP contact cement someone mentioned earlier in the thread on a green lantern oufit part, and that stuff is KILLER! You get a large can for $7 that will probably last you your lifetime.
It stinks like holy hell, so make sure you use it outside, but man, that stuff grabs like no ones business!
The can said 15-20 minutes, but outside at about 72 and breezy it was more like 10. The can says to keep it in moderate temps overnight for the best bond, but honestly, after a half hour I tugged on it, and nothing was going anywhere.
It could possibly even be used for quick repairs, but lugging the can around and the fumes would be issues.
I’m going to use it to add some strap holders as well. (Its a shoulder pad/guard sort of assembly.)
I’ll definitely consider foam more for props, after seeing your work, and discovering this.
sounds good, only problem is you can’t clamp foam because it will leave indent on foam so having hold two pieces of foam together for 10 minutes will really slow down the build process. I might check out the glue for some larger heavier pieces, but hot glue is still the leader for me. Maybe I will see how it will work, coverying the seems once I have hot glued them just to add extra strength.
You don’t have to clamp it You let it dry for 15 minutes, and then just press the parts together. It sticks right away when you join two parts, but the can says maximum strength in 24 hours.
oh ok, so you put it on the pieces leave them apart for 15 minutes then press them together?. that sounds ok, still a long wait gluing time though, but before I judge I will have to try it. Thanks.
