Just received my D-42 shell. I’ve been hearing that the shell is a tad smaller than other shells. With this in mind, I don’t think that a pre-cut aluminum mobo will fit and I will need to use MDF. What thickness have people used with a wooden board? Has anyone had any luck with a precut board and a D-42 shell? What hardware have people used to attach the pack and ALICE frame to a wooden mobo? Suggestions on how to draw out the shape of the board since it will be smaller than the ones in the reference section and I know it is not strictly tracing the pack itself?
you want your mother board to be 1/4" thick.
there’s a thread floating around about mounting the motherboard, you can swap his using aluminum for you using mdf, has detailed instructions of parts, placement etc.
also, vinc did a thread about making a motherboard.
I wouldn’t use MDF (too heavy and chips easily) , you would be better off using 1/4" hardboard or Luan plywood. The shell doesn’t weigh much so no need to go any thicker. You could use wood blocks glued and screwed to the board to mount the shell to. Lay out your shell and do a comparison against Stefan’s board sizes and go from there. Do it on paper and make a template and transfer it to the wood.
I used mdf with my D-42 vac shell. I used 6mm thick. I traced round my shell to get the basic shape of the motherboard and then adjusted it by hand using the plans. I used aluminium L shape brackets for mounting shell to the motherboard. I used countersunk bolts to bolt the brackets to the board with a nut at the back of the bracket. Again I used nut and bolt to fix the Alice frame to the mother board. When I had the brackets in place I put the shell on and drilled through the shell into the L brackets. I tapped the holes in the L brackets and just used cap head screws to fix shell to mother board. There are some pictures in my pack write up I did.
