Hello everyone! Been a visitor to this site for a while and just had to join up and share my experience of building my “mdf proton pack” a little about me, now let me start by saying I’ve never “built” anything in my entire life! I bought a gun kit of Nick o tron a couple of years back but that was more assembly than actual building. But 10 days ago I thought SCREW IT! I’m gonna try this! I read ALOT of post about the different ways of doing things and eventually decided that even though I would love to buy one of the many cool looking shells out there funds just wouldn’t allow. I ended up spending £36 on a couple of sheets of mdf and £6 on some “titlebond 3” (as all my research through the forums seem to suggest it) and bought 4 clamps of eBay. Now as silly as this sounds 10 days ago I didn’t even realise I would need to clap the mdf together! I can’t stress enough how much of a novice I am when it comes to making anything. Raided my dads shed and came up with an old jigsaw and was away! Now 10 days on I have enough done to post some picks and get some advice. Please, please, go easy on me first project ever and a proton pack was probably a little ambitious first go around lol. But I’ve loved every minute of building it! Working out how to doing things, trail and error. So I will now go work out how to post pictures and look forward to any comments I might receive ![]()
OK, a little confused on how to post pictures. Can someone help me out on this. I read q and a and still don’t get it.
You can set up a Photobucket account that will let you copy the links automatically.
Here what you’re looking for in the mobile app:
Just tap the IMG link and it will copy the link to your clipboard and then you can easily paste directly into your post. Looking forward to seeing your scratch progress. There are tons of resources here and great people willing to help.
Thank you very much for that!
I’m glad you saw the image before I had a brain fart and erased the image from Photobucket!
Made sure to sand each bit as I went along
This was about day 5 ![]()
Starting to look like something!
Added the bottom plates and made the bumper. Spent the entire day making it!
Not very pretty from behind
Filled all the gaps to make it seamless
And this is where I’m at today! Ignore ribs on gun box just placed in position and not cut to correct size yet. But there you have it! For my first go I’m pretty pleased with the results. Still a long way to go yet I know. Let me know your thoughts/idears/improvments thanks ![]()
My God, that’s beautiful! How much does it weigh at this point?
Um not sure tbh! I can pick it up quite easily so I’m not worried, and I’m a big guy so it will be fine for me (I’m 6.3 and stocky)
After I had drawn everything out the first time I had to go over Nearly EVERY measurement again as I continually forgot to allow for the thickness of the mdf boards! Lol it was such a headache!
I’ve got a few scratch builds under my belt and I’ll say you are doing an amazing job! Anything I saw to comment with an adjustment, you’ve fixed as as it progressed. Drive on my man…I can’t wait to see more! BTW…your bumper nailed it!
Thanks for your post. I’m really enjoying making it, I’ve completely been bitten by the “building” bug! And completely surprised myself with how it’s turned out!
Pretty much finished all the woodwork today! So it’s a happy day
(but there is a day of fine sanding and a little glue clean up ahead of me
)
And physanon. It weighs 12.7lbs in the last picture
Wow. That’s light.
Well that wasn’t such a chore now, was it? Looks great sir. Can’t wait to see this progress. I’m curious as to how your gonna attach the ppd, whether your gonna round out the corner or cut a notch in the ppd to give it the illusion of being round. If that makes sense.
I’m going to cut a notch out…I think! ![]()
Bravo! Nice build.
Yeah, this thing is beautiful! Great job!
Thank you all for the kind words ![]()
