New Details about Ghostbusters: Night Shift

After a multi-year gestation, Ghostbusters fans finally have their first real look at Ghostbusters: Night Shift, the new animated series headed to Netflix in 2027. Following the title reveal on Ghostbusters Day earlier this month, Netflix, Jason Reitman, and Gil Kenan unveiled a more substantial preview at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in southeastern France, screening first footage, concept art, character designs, and the official logline. The series is officially in-canon, filling the gap between Ghostbusters II (1989) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It is set in 1994 New York, five years after the crew took the Statue of Liberty for a walk, with the city on the cusp of gentrification and the story unfolding during Walter Peck’s run as mayor. With the original trio of Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler in retirement, a new wave of supernatural threats arrives, leaving a group of young, untrained New Yorkers to take up the mission.

According to Reitman, the setting fills “an entire decade’s worth of ghostbusting that has never been told,” taking viewers back to the 1990s.

The new team consists of Belladonna the goth, Mitzi the punk, Zoe the kid (and Mitzi’s younger sister), Mike the scientist, and Travis the con man, who is voiced by Jack Quaid. The lineup also includes the Terror Puppy, a miniaturized version of the original Terror Dogs. The team operates out of a run-down version of the Tribeca firehouse.

In keeping with the era, the new crew uses kit-bashed, half-working prototypes left behind by the originals. Details shown at the showcase included unstable proton beams, a PKE meter built from PlayStation 1 parts, a “Ghost Drive” assembled from recycled skateboard wheels and guitar pedals, and Ecto-94, a spray-painted van that stands in for Ecto-1. The series uses a grimy, DIY-punk aesthetic from Australian studio Flying Bark (Stranger Things: Tales From '85). Concept art also included Ray’s Occult Books, Ray Stantz’s shop introduced in Ghostbusters II.

The team stated the series will be scary as well as funny. Threats named during the presentation included a Poison Demon in the “Hopscotch Hellhole,” a Class IV sludge called the “Rot Monster,” and a “Grabby Hands” Reflector Ghost. The preview closed with a work-in-progress clip from Episode 2, in which Travis and an entranced Zoe are confronted by a phantom ticket-taker at Grand Central.

Ghostbusters: Night Shift is executive produced by Reitman and Kenan, the team behind Afterlife and Frozen Empire, with Ben Hibon (Star Trek: Prodigy) and Elliott Kalan (Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Daily Show) also serving as showrunners. Amie Karp (Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Frozen Empire) and original Ghostbusters co-writer Dan Aykroyd round out the executive producer ranks. The series arrives on Netflix in 2027.

Ok quick thoughts… from what I’m reading its a cannon version of Extreme Ghostbusters…maybe? Im ok with that. I’m not loving the younger cast of characters (teens) cause now it feels like any new ghostbusting team that isnt the Original has to be under the age of 21…but its not a deal breaker for me. What i am curious about is, will the original team be in it. It takes place in the mid 90s. Ok fantastic, but the original team should be together still busting ghosts. Is this a trainee team? A “Fan” team thats not offically with the franchise? (The home made gear makes me think maybe)… Do we see the fallout between Egon and the rest of the guys? If so who will play Egon? Does Maurice LaMarche come back to voice him? Does Dan, Bill and Ernie voice Ray, Peter and Winston still?

Like, i have alot of questions that im sure the writers are well aware of given its place in the timeline, but other then it being a younger team (I get it, its an animated show aimed at kids) i think at this point, the ghostbusters should hire more adults at some point. I loved Larz in Frozen Empire. He fit perfectly. I like how Callie and Gary are on the team, and i got nothing agents trevor, phoebe, lucky and podcast, (they are all well into their late teens if not early 20s by now)…But at what point are we handing proton packs to toddlers lol?

Id like to see more 30-50 year old members! Just saying! Other then that, im looking forward to a trailer!

Glad to see the clarification that the equipment is found not built from scratch. Can’t wait to see how Ray actually gets involved.

No, set in the original movie canon. Nothing to do with the RGB/EGB canon.

i know that…i mean its the cannon version of Extreme Ghostbusters in the live action universe…

Sorry about that!

I wonder why they chose to make it canon? Doing so locks them into the continuity and limits potential storytelling. Perhaps this is just going to be a 1-time limited series to bridge a specific lore gap that Gil and Jason want to fill.

I like the art style. Sony is really hitting it out of the park lately. I’m so glad the bean-mouth plasticine style animation is over.

I wouldn’t read too much into it being ‘canon’.

TVG was canon until it wasn’t.

Heres my motto with Cannon usually…If its in a video game or a comic book or novel…Its Temporary cannon until its not and overwritten at some point. Happens in Star Wars ALL THE TIME… Case in Point, when Rogue One came out, their was a comic book that explained how Andor met K2S0. Great, fun…but the tv show Andor changed that completely. Ok.

With Ghostbusters, as a kid, we thought the The Real Ghostbusters was the in between adventures of the Ghostbusters…UNTIL GHOSTBUSTERS 2 CAME OUT and totally dismissed everything in the show. How could the Ghostbusters bust ghost if they went out of buisness and were sued after the first film? Answer…its not cannon. Its an Alternate Universe (Multiverse) answer. This just happens to be in an Animated Universe. Extreme Ghostbusters is the sequel to The Real Ghostbusters, both exists in the same universe (even though the animation style is different..)

Ghostbusters: Answer The Call…IS AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE. While i’ll never be a fan of that film, (and no not because we had women ghostbusters), Its still Cannon as in its part of the Ghostbusters Multiverse. Remember folks, Ghostbusters has always been a multiverse ever since the original form. Gozer the traveler…is a multiverse traveling villain. At the end of the first film, the team sent her ass packing back to another universe. They sent Vigo in Ghostbusters 2 back to another universe. Now Gozer came back to our universe in Afterlife, and was trapped, but Vigo can still return. He’s still out there.

With Star Wars, the recent (in the past 20 years) trend is if its Animated, its part of the live action universe. Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch, Tales of the…, Maul Shadow Lords…ALL ARE CANNON, same as the live action Tv Shows. Thats why with the recent Mandalorian movie, You had animated characters show up in live action in a movie and it makes total sense.

Ghostbusters Night Shift seems to be doing the same thing here. Im totally ok with that. I got questions though…Ray said the team went out of buisness in the 90s when Egon stole the Ecto 1 and went to Summersville after their was no ghosts left to catch.

Ok, is this new kid team an official ghostbusters team or a bunch of “wanabes” making their own stuff.. Im still confused on that, but im sure ill find out when i see the show next year.

Heres the thing they dont tell you though, if the show ends up not being great, (which i hope doesn’t happen), they can always reverse course and say later on quietly “Na that doesn’t count anymore”

They did that with Terminator 3, Salvation and Genysis. I think the halloween and Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street films have done that on several ocasions too. If they can do that to entire movies, they can do that with a spin off animated tv show.

At the End of the Day, Nothings ever fully cannon unless you personally decide it is. Thats how i view it.

How could TRGB be the in-between adventures when in S1E10 the episode Take Two establishes that The Real Ghostbusters is the true prime story and Ghostbusters (1984) is, in actual fact, a fictional adaptation of their adventures. The characters even make a joke about Bill Murray being the voice

“The new team consists of Belladonna the goth, Mitzi the punk, Zoe the kid (and Mitzi’s younger sister), Mike the scientist, and Travis the con man, who is voiced by Jack Quaid.”

Sounds like they plucked their new team straight from The Young Ones but made them “kawai”.

Big ‘MEH’ from me, but i’m not their target audience and nobody cares about my opinion.

I hate to nitpick, but my understanding was the otherworldly dimension and cross-dimensional travel in GB84 is not the same as parallel dimension (every-possibility-has-it’s-own-universe) and multiverses. Those are separate concepts.

To be fair Ray does say “return forthwith to your place of origin or to the nearest convenient parallel dimension” soooo maybe? Not that him rambling off the cuff really solidifies anything but it does put the idea in play.
