The official numbers from the NPD Group are here for June 2009. We first saw a estimation of the number of sales from VGChartz.com. They estimated that Ghostbusters would be in the #10 position with 191,000 sales for the Xbox360. The NPD numbers cover 60-65% of all copies of the Video Game sold in North America, with the exception of Toys R Us and Walmart. Those additional copies sold are estimated to give a fairly percise number of copies sold.
Ghostbusters is no where to be found on the NPD Group’s Top 10 for video game sales. The top 10 position was held by Infamous on PS3 with 192,000 sales.
EDIT: Through leaked info we have the data from NPD in regards to Ghostbusters: The Video Game. It sold the following amounts:
Xbox360: 192,298
PS3: 103,413
Wii: 71,899
PS2: 43,420
DS: 29,059
(PC Sales is not represented in NPD Data).
If those numbers are close to being correct, it is still $25 million dollars worth of sales for Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Here is hoping that Ghostbusters will be seen sucessful enough for a sequel or even more. That being said.. if nearly 500,000 copies were sold… where are all the fans? Sign Up | GBFans.com
Well, they kind of neutered the PC version so I’m not too surprised about that part… I was going to buy the game (PC) until I found out they put DRM on it and nixed the multiplayer.
(*includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)
No version of Ghostbusters was able to crack the top 10 for July… Ouch! According to people over at NeoGAF by way of IGN, these are the software sales numbers for the top 10 with combined platform sales numbers (*Note: These # have since been removed from IGN’s site):
Combined sales of the major consoles has landed the video game at number 5 for the month of July. That pretty good! Not a massive blockbuster success, but still very good. This seems to indicate that at least one version of the game (most likely the 360) sold just short of enough copies to miss the broken down top 10 chart.
Darn. This is a bit disappointing. I was certainly hoping the game would blow everything else away and do humongous numbers. So, that is disappointing that it didn’t crack the top 10. Though, if the last post is right, apparently it did for combined sales on all platforms.
I’m not much of a gamer myself, so I never pay much attention to how much money games typically make. Can anybody who actually does know break it down for us? Are these still pretty good numbers? Especially when you consider the game didn’t even come out until June 16th. Are these still good sales, even if it didn’t necessarily make the top ten? Because I know we are all hoping for the game to do really well so Atari would have a reason to want to do sequels.
I think with the growing popularity of GhostBusters rising again, we will start to see a huge amount of new faces here either jumping on the GB game, or GBIII hype .. or even become some awesome prop builders while they wait for the movie.
Either way i welcome them if they need a place to discuss GB related things
You know, I kinda had a hard time finding my copy (XBOX 360). Most stores were sold out in my area. So I ordered mine directly from Best Buy since I had a gift card collecting dust anyway. I’m very surprised to hear it didn’t do better than that.
Excellent game though. Could have been a bit longer, but maybe XBOX Live will give us some downloadable missions soon.
at the gamestop that I bought my 360 copy at, it was a relatively small one so I figured they’d have copies. Well, they had only a few left, and they were hiding them behind the counter for people who only asked for them. I dont know if that’s the usual strategy at places such as that, but I did find it a little odd.
Anyway, I hope the game keeps selling. its a good, fun game, and deserves to be in the top ten. Hopefully since the PS3 demo went up it brought a litlte bit more interest in it for other gamers.
I think it’ll do well in the long run, remember, gamers who rent it also figures into the equation.
Also, considering it was only released on the PS3 in Europe it did very well - it’s at #25 on the top 40 sellers over a month later, so I don’t see worrying about sales at all. I would say it’s doing quite well. Once it gets its multiplatform release overseas it should do even better.
I’m actually surprised by how well it’s doing, considering that Ghostbusters hasn’t been on the public radar in 20 years the game is doing quite well. I would say that if Sony isn’t pleased they’re a bunch of fools.
I think Sony and everyone were hoping for a game that would make $100 million dollars.
Granted it is still possible that sales will pick up or remain where they are for several months.. it is possible that it won’t happen. They will have to sell another 1.2-1.5 million copies.. which is about 100,000 copies over the course of 12 months. If they did 400,000 this month, maybe 200,000 the next ,and 100,000 they would be more than half way which would be nice.
But it really isn’t a match for games like Wii Sports or Wii Fit which stay in the top 10 for years.
well prototype will soon be forgotten along with most of the top ten. not to worried about that. only thing that worries me is that gamestop has lowered the price for a used copy of GBTVG, its like they aren’t even giving it a chance.
NO game is a match for Wii Sports or Wii Fit. It’s absurd to compare the two, Nintendo has a stranglehold on that part of the market - the so-called “casual games.”
If Sony was wanting to make $100 mil than that’s absurd, ALL gaming revenue is down, sales are at a slump with the #1 game (Prototype) selling 419,900 copies.
That is the reason why they made this game. They didn’t want to risk a blockbuster failure where they spend $100 million or more to make a movie that doesn’t make it back.
There are interviews with Ramis and Aykroyd that state the main reason to make this game was because it could be a hundred million dollar game like GTA and others out there.
It’s kind of absurd to think the game would make THAT much money. But that’s just imho. A movie on the other hand is a completely different animal. I think the game proves that there are fans out there and there is a following for the franchise. Now it just remains to be seen what Sony will do.
OR am I reading you incorrectly? The game was made to mimic a $100 million dollar film and if it fails to live up to that they’re going to can the actual film version? Or something along those lines?
Either way, I think the game has done pretty well, a lot of high profile games came out last month and it still held its own.
