I’d take this with a grain of salt, as any Ghostbusters 3 “news” should be taken. The source article barely says anything of the matter and doesn’t reveal its source. But, if this is real, I hope they mean a reboot and not a remake. And that reboot better have most of the original cast!! At least show us the original GBs bustin’ one last ghost!!
Are they still filming in Cleveland? Also don’t count out Bill Murray, I think his appearance on the Scream Awards is a subtle hint that he wants to be a ghost!
Honestly don’t remake and reboot mean the same thing nowadays? Both terms are used so interchangeably anymore. But you know that if they go through with it, expect a lowest common denominator story and black uniforms and equipment that looks like its from the Apple store. The new Iron Batman er, I mean Robocop is proof of that type of thinking. I mean if Sony couldn’t wait more than 5 years to reboot Spiderman, who’s to say that GB and MiB aren’t their next travesties waiting to happen?
They specifically said “reboot” not remake in the article. Which is positive news. I think the only way to move forward is to make it Ghostbusters 3 as a reboot with new characters taking on the mantel and not try to remake a classic. Not that it couldn’t be done … it just shouldn’t be done and would fail a horrible and gruesome box office death.
But this does sound like the rhetoric we have been hearing for the past few years. Until I see an official trailer and poster art, I’m not getting my hopes up.
I think that the terms “remake”, “reboot”, and “sequel” all kind of interchange with each other depending who you are talking with. For instance, most articles about the upcoming Jurassic Park movie are calling it a “reboot” when it has already been named Jurassic World and the director came out and said it takes place 20 years after the first movie.
When Dan Aykroyd said that the new Ghostbusters movies would be in the vein of Star Trek I highly doubt that he meant that all of the roles were being re-cast with younger actors set in an alternate timeline as the first movie.
Yeah, I think what he meant was that he is confident that the new movie will be as well revieved as the new Star Trek films. To my knowledge I hadn’t heard too many negative things have been said about those new movies. I’ll have to check.

This all comes down to Michael De Luca which is now President of Production for Columbia Pictures. Seems to be what the change was that started this up.
Can Ghostbusters even be Rebooted/ remade? Well, yeah it can be but I can’t imagine what can be done to make a remake its own separate thing and not a bad imitation.
I think it’s been too long to take a shot at GB3. The anticipation would be too much and, just like the new Star Trek films, would have a hard time balancing appealing to old fans and creating new ones. Plus, today’s audience would rather watch it on their TVs at home than a movie theater full of screaming kids and texting morons. My vote, live action series (more content that way, and I don’t have to put on pants.)
I know I am the minority on this one, I’ve said it before but It may be harder to jump start a franchise after so much time has passed, but I don’t feel it’s impossible. Most every one on this sight might say that Kingdom of The Crystal Skulls was a failure. I personally liked it. Of course I liked GB 2. Again I think I’m digging my own grave here:) but it also took 29 years for a sequel to Tron to come out and I feel Tron Legacy was pretty fun. I think that Ghostbusters could be done right if pushed the right direction. Ghostbusters The Video Game delivered another chapter and it was very satisfying. Now Mr Akroyd and Sony wants to take it a different direction and try to tell a fresh story that is so strong that you don’t need to reference the past. If the movie sees the light of day I am real interested to see what they settled on. I know that there is a 50/50 chance that the film could suck as well. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed. I am really hoping that Bill Murray steps through that hole they are supposedly leaving open for him.

Hey, philmorgan81. I, for one, agree with you! I think, if done right, this movie might be amazing. I don’t think it could ever be as popular as the first movie. But, honestly, they’re taking their time with the script, which means you know they’re striving for perfection! The video game, as you mentioned, was an excellent follow-up, I personally loved the second film, and the comic books at IDW have been amazing, so obviously there are stories to tell in this world. I think the strength of the movie, though, will lie on the new characters they come up with, because the classic four are tough to beat. I’m just hoping this thing gets made already!
Thanks Carnacki, I’ve enjoyed all that the franchise has had to offer and this film will just be one more thing to enjoy. I’m glad they have taken there time with it and I think I’m just as anxious to see this come together as you are.
I hope the film doesnt go in the trend of other sfx blockbusters of recent years. Ya know, when we have about 40 minutes of actual movie( good or bad ) and the rest is what i like to call “CGI auto pilot”. When the direction, character arcs, suspense, take a back seat for an adhd laden mess of explosions, crashes, and cars and people flying at the screen untill the credits the roll. ( ie. man of steel, avengers, pacific rim )

I wouldn’t mind a Men in black reboot that has different agents than the ones in the original Men in black movies. Honestly I don’t think I want a new Ghostbusters movie at this point. I don’t know that I want new characters to take over the Ghostbusters. And I liked The Amazing Spider-Man and think it did things better than the original trilogy. I hated MJ in Spider-Man 2 and 3. Gwen is way better so far.
