Paul Feig Hires Katie Dippold to Write New GB Movie

Touche good sir.

Again I am going to give this a shot like many, but I hope “forcing” the new cast all women will be ok, I don’t care about women in it, Janine was a Ghostbuters in the cartoon and it rocked. I say cast male/female characters as it fits, making sure the chemistry is there but we will see. If this is fully green lit, it may be re written or changed on some aspects. I do wonder on the design of costume, equipment etc. Please god no lenses flairs! lol

Who’s says this new Ghostbusters will be a team of four. All new could be 2 could be 20. They don’t want anything that will make it compare to the original. That, to me, includes the number of actual gbs.

And will result in a disaster of biblical proportions.

Stupid re-boot. Pitiful that they have run out of original ideas for GB3.

First draft:

Ugh, this franchise is ruined. I can’t stand Adam Sandler, Chris Farley and Chris Rock’s sense of humor. We don’t want a Ghostbusters movie like Billy Madison! It’s not going to be funny at all and is just going to feel so forced with those guys. RIP Ghostbusters: 1984 - 1995.

Second draft:

WHAT?!?! Apatow!?!!! You have got to be kidding me! Ghostbusters isn’t a stoner comedy. Ugh, nobody wants to see Seth Rogan and James Franco as Ghostbusters, it’ll just be their same ol’ same ol’. Can’t believe they’ve run out of ideas for a new Ghostbusters movie.

Third draft:

YES! Chris Miller and Phil Lord for Ghostbusters, that’s great - oh wait, they did Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs!?! Ugh. NOBODY wants to see a cartoonized version of Ghostbusters with a bunch of talking strawberries running around. They’re ruining everything that is sacred to me! I don’t like Mr. T and you know that because he was in that he’ll be in this. I mean, Mr. T as a Ghostbuster! Blah!

Fourth draft:

(Reads above) Yeah, pretty much the same discussion that’s been going on for twenty years.

how about ones that were in the Richard Muller novel?

if its an all girl cast, I hope the logo changes, because anytime I’m wearing a shirt with the traditional GB logo on it, I dont want some dipsh*t coming up to me asking if I liked the new movie, etc

screw it. I’m gonna speak my mind. I’m not on board for this. this sounds like the worst idea for the franchise. youre gonna alienate almost all of the original fans and confuse alot of yonger audiences with a movie that will only be amusing and then ends up on a dvd rental shelf never getting rented as opposed to a film(s) that have become classics and enthralled audiences with a sense of wonder about science and the unknown.

I’ve got to weigh in on this. I don’t expect anyone to agree nor do I want to be bashed for what are solely just** my** feelings on this announcement…

Personally, I am absolutely gutted by Sony’s decision on this and I honestly haven’t been this deflated since we lost Ramis early this year - I genuinely feel a sense of…mourning, for want of a better word!

Why do I feel like this? I wholeheartedly think this exercise is solely about greed and the people at Sony knowing that they can capitalise on the use of the Ghostbusters name in order to make a guaranteed return - at the expense of the original movies fan base. I know I’m biased, but “Ghostbusters” isn’t one of the many throwaway movies that are being remade and rehashed every week by Hollywood. It’s a massively beloved franchise almost up there with the likes of Indiana Jones and Star Wars, to name a couple.

Whilst I know everyone (rightly!) bashes the Star Wars prequels (and lets not mention Indy 4), at least some effort was made to continue the legacy and add to the universe in an effort to appease fans of the originals and gain a new audience for the franchise. Whether that was successful is down to personal opinion (and is well documented!!) but it was certainly not a “wipe the slate clean and just gender-swap the formula” in a blatant effort to make money. Beloved characters were carried over, there was a connection to the films everyone loved and there was a sense of belonging to that whole universe.

Another, arguably more successful reboot in terms of critical acclaim, was Star Trek. Whilst I don’t doubt that it has it’s critics, at its heart it kept the same characters as the originals and attempted to please fans of the original TV series and movies, yet offer something new into the cannon. It kept the original characters and remained true to their personalities. It wasn’t an all out “let’s just use the name and swap everything for the sake of it” approach which screams of pure greed and Hollywoods obvious lack of creativity!

It truly irks me that the people at Sony would treat such a highly regarded property in this way. If the film has to be made, why on earth call it a “Ghostbusters” movie when everything about it, other than the concept, is being disregarded?? I am trying to diplomatically look at it, but all I can see it as is nothing other than a quick cash grab and huge “**** you” to the fan base!! I think they assume we will just throw our cash at them and go an see anything marketed as a “Ghostbusters” movie. Some will, but will it be remember in another 30 years??

This isn’t solely the decision to swap out the cast and change it to women - in theory I don’t have a problem with that other than it stinks of trying to just make it different for the sake of just making it different like the remakes of “About last night” and “Death at a funeral”. The “how do we make this differ? Oh, lets just gender-swap or race-swap the original movie and people will flock to see it” approach that Hollywood currently seems so obsessed with. It’s that there easily could be something added to the already awesome originals. I personally thought the video game was incredible and genuinely loved almost everything about it. It doesn’t need an fudging “reboot” - the term for lazy film-making candidly used as though that makes it acceptable.

Should there be a “Ghostbusters 3”? Who knows. I’m not convinced about a direct sequel but would welcome being proved wrong. The death of Ramis left a HUGE hole in the very concept. Bill Murray’s reluctance could be seen as a sign to just leave it as two very-fondly remembered movies that can never be repeated and Dan Aykroyd’s recent movie choices mean even the very optimistic should remain slightly cynical. Only the guy who represented the everyman in Ghostbusters, Ernie Hudson, seems to be in touch with what the fans want!!

The brand still makes a lot of money. You only need to look at the range of merchandise available now, 30 years later, to know it’s popularity shows no sign of letting up. Could another cartoon series add to the Ghostbusters story? I would argue “absolutely!!!”. The adventures of Dr’s Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore seem far from over. But do I want to see a live-action introduction to the new adventures of Dr’'s Petra Venk(Wo)man, Ray-Ray Stantz, Egirl Spengler and Winnie Zeddemore, under the name of a movie I hold so close to my heart - do I ****!!! Go make you’re own little movie about ghost-chasing girlies and leave this franchise the hell alone!!! I don’t doubt theres a great movie to be made under that very concept, just not a “Ghostbusters” movie!!

Like I said, this is just my opinion, but I feel truly passionate about it!! There…I feel slightly better for getting that off my chest!!

You know what? It’s funny to hear people talk with such certainty about the end product when we know absolutely nothing but a few tidbits. There could still be a a boy buster in the group and Feig didn’t say anything about throwing everything from the originals away, just that some things need to be updated and that he doesn’t want to make a parody of the first with too many nods.

Also, I find it hilarious to hear different perceptions from around the boards and community about the SW Prequels and Indy 4. A lot went from “Quit crapping on my childhood” to “At least they let my original beloved characters get crapped on in the process.” I see a reboot (which even I did a double take on) as a way of preserving the original’s integrity and reintroducing the franchise to modern audiences. And no matter how you slice it, the wind is slowly going out of the sails on the recent merchandize blowout. Matty wasn’t hitting quota on their stuff (though there might be more than one reason for that) and I really feel the reason we’re seeing so much right now, aside from the anniversaries, is because Sony wants to make another film and this gauges interest and raises capital. If a new movie doesn’t happen it’s not going to help the franchise. Still standing by AJs comments.

You missed the part when I said " just my feelings on this announcement…". Did I ask you to agree?

Sorry, I wasn’t talking about you but the boards in general. I’ve been on Superherohyoe more than this.

Also, your on a message board in a conversation. People aren’t going to always agree and the point of the boards is to express that or it wouldn’t be a conversation.

No worries, I’m a tad sensitive on the topic if you can’t tell.

I’m actually not a SW fan and this is the only time I have actually felt a connection to what seemed like a total over reaction to the prequels. Indiana Jones…well I hated the last one overall but could pick out a (small) handful of scenes that stand up there with the best of the series, so it wasn’t a total loss.

I think what I am trying to say is that, for me, “Ghostbusters” is the adventures of Venkman, Stantz, Spengler and Zeddemore. With the loss of Harold Ramis and the ever advancing ages, I could accept, to an extent, a passing of the torch movie to continue the franchise - albeit reluctantly. It’s the total abandonment and “i will do it my way” approach to this new movie that grates. What other beloved, highly regarded film franchises have done this? I can’t think of many, other than the horror remakes and they are largely forgettable dross. It’s just not the treatment a film like Ghostbusters deserves…in my opinion.

What are you talking about?! Those films made loads of money and…oh I see your point…

Hang on, Katie Dippold wrote The Heat! You mean the Al Pacino and Robert De Niro movie? But that’s a great film isn’t it? I have to look up her credits. Oh actually it’s a romcom from 2013 with Sandra Bullock…

I feel you. I would love to see a continuation of the franchise I knew, but that ship sailed. Just time to hope that if one gets made the people behind it get the spirit of GBs and put the best product they can out there.

While i wish that same thing, they absolutely will not be keeping the gear the same, unfortunately. Nor will they use Ecto-1 or any of the other props we love. All of it is just simply outdated and doesn’t apply to today’s tech. I wouldn’t really want them to use the old stuff or firehouse anyway. Wouldn’t be much of a reboot if that were the case.

I’d like to point out something I brought up in a Facebook post yesterday: some of us all ancient enough to remember when the Extreme Ghostbusters came on television. There wasn’t much less internet usage back then, so there’s less of a digital record of the response. I recall several crappy discussion that were concentrated on the different racial, gender and ability make-up of the new team. There was some truly vile shit that was said. And, of course, some were concerned that the franchise on the whole would be tarnished.

And here we sit a decade and a half later. Those that liked it remember it. Those that didn’t either didn’t watch it or have forgotten about it. The franchise didn’t come crashing down – and some of the elements of the show were even incorporated into the recent ongoing comic series.

In the end, we don’t have to preemptively strike down ideas because we’ll sort the good from the bad regardless.

One more thing – I’ve been wearing my Ghostbusters gear for YEARS on Halloween. When I first started wearing my pack in college at the end of the '90s, it always got a huge response. People loved it. I still find that people respond positively to it… but more and more later, I’ve also had people asking me what I am wearing. I’ve been taken aback by the questions every time. That never used to happen.

If nothing else, rebooting the franchise may raise awareness of the original as it (like it not, guys) fades in pop culture twenty five years after the last film. And hopefully, if it gets made, this film will meet or exceed our expectations.

People went crazy when Tim Burton rebooted Batman in 1989. The car wasn’t going to be as good. The tone was going to be all wrong. The cast was wholly inadequate (“Michael Keaton OH NOES!”). We can debate the merits of that first film as much as we want, but one thing is certain – it brought the franchise to a whole new level. Eventually, that paved the way for even better films and might have saved the characters from slipping into obscurity.

Like the comments and agree. I’ve had parents point at me on Halloween and call me a spaceman or rocket dude. Come on, man! I’m a Ghostbuster!

I don’t like the idea at all. Pure money maker though. My personal opinion this will be made and will hit us pretty quickly.

It’ll be interesting to see what there equipment will be like design wise.

Have to disagree with you there AJ. Sony are milking the 30th anniversary for everything it’s worth right now. To me, that says they’re giving it one final “exploit” before shifting to the reboot, bound to be aimed at the twitch-generation (and younger). One it’s out, the old movies will quietly fade except in the eyes of the old die-hard fans. I can’t see Sony putting any focus on the old movies one the reboot is out- they will want to put ALL focus on the new movie and see the old ones as a distraction.

I’m not again reboots in all cases, IF the “old” version is dated and could stand some freshening up (like Galactica, which I loved in the 70’s but can’t watch any more because it hasn’t dated well at all, so the 2004 version is so much better). But Ghostbusters still holds up- just like the Back to the Future movies do.

I’m glad that Sony still feels the franchise is worth throwing money at, but this idea is horrible. Not the all-girl aspect, but the complete non-association reboot part of it.
