My first real crack at making my own movie accurate pack. Making it out of plywood so far and ordered some parts from multimediamayhem, which I’m waiting on. Check out my pictures and let me know what you think / give some tips.

looking good so far..love the scratchbuild…just make sure you bondo the crap out of that thing so it hides the woodgrain. keep it up man!

For a pack that is going so well so far I would suggest avoiding that can for your n-filter. You might need to add another layer to your cyclotron to make it deeper. Great so far though.
Hey guys. Thanks for the kind words. I have taken some advice and considered changing both the depth of my cyclotron and using a different can for my N-filter. Will let you know how it works out.
I’m just getting ahead of myself a little as I am looking at the sounds for the pack itself (power up, power down, neutrona wand blasting). I looked around the boards and found this:
but I don’t know how to record them. Stupid question I know, but how do I get them from that site to my pack. Again, apologize for the dumb question.
Hey guys, did some work over the last three days. Taking our (my father and I) time, so not much to report, but some. Check it out.
Did some work on the cyclotron lenses and made an ion arm. Cut these out of reflectors using a jigsaw, what a pain! They kept cracking, but we salvaged 4 out of 8.
After that, I cut out 4 coverings for them. I was going to use actual washers, but thought this would work with some wood glue. Not perfectly round, but good enough for me.
After that, worked on the gearbox. Made completely from 2 x 6. The rounded top was done by my father using a pocket knife and sand paper. Came out great.
Finally, did some of the strips (is that what you call them?) on the gearbox. These are stuck on using wood glue.

Thats looking great, I love the new approach to building, with the top portion of the pack all one piece, its going to be really strong. One thing i will say, and this is just my opinion, i think your cyclotron rings look a little thin. How do you plan on painting it and keeping the lenses clear, masking them off? And you carved that gearbox piece out of a knife? Thats awesome!
The lenses are only layed down for now. They’re not actually glued. When I am ready, I will remove the lenses, sand, prime, and paint black. Then I will put the lenses back in and glue on the ‘washers’.
I like the approach of making the top, moreorless, one piece. Will definitely add sturdiness to the pack as a whole.

this is looking great but i really think you should use washers for the cyclotron rings. the uneven rings you have cut from wood are letting down the look of the pack i think. using perfectly cut washers will keep your cyclotron on par with the rest of your great pack.
Thanks for the advice Nick. I think you have convinced me to seek out real washers. I was on the fence about it after seeing it up close, and I think I’ll go for it.

I took the advice I was given earlier in this thread and found some actual metal washers touse instead of the wooden ones I had cut out. I think the advice was spot on and they give the pack a better look.
I finished gluing the ‘straps’ on the gearbox and did some on the gunmount. I have yet to sand them down and finish them completely, but there is some progress. I know it looks rough, but with some wood filler and sanding, they should turn out great…I hope!
Anyways, here is how the pack looks thus far.
how heavy is that thing? I love the detail but my back aches for yours if it weighs what I’m thinking it does
It’s gonna end up being about 25 lbs or so. It looks heavier than it is (so far). This is gonna sound weird, but I don’t mind the weight. I would rather have a heavier pack than a really light one because of a scene in GB 2: when Venkman puts on his pack in the courthouse and stumbles a bit, complaining about the weight, that’s what I (kinda) want mine to be.
I also won’t be wearing it for extended periods of time. It will be on a guitar stand for the most part.
yeah, that thing looks like it prolly weighs about 50lbs already!
Are you going to coat it with anything to hide the woodgrain?
Yeah, I am going to use bondo or wood filler or something to cover the woodgrain, then sand, prime, and paint. It’s gonna take a lot to cover it all in, but I don’t mind the work.
