i got this on ebay and am really impressed with the kit…theres not much left to do construction wise, but, of course, theres a couple of questions and, after using the search and looking through the forums, im looking for some advice
(sorry if some of these questions have been asked before but, either they havent been answered or im looking for alternatives)
lights: i know hyperdyne is not available and i remember seeing that exoray is working on a kit but i cant find that info…i would make my own, but i have minimal electronics experience…if lights are not obtainable, any sufficient substitutes that will look like lights but wont light up?
any advice for the covers for where the little LED’s would go on the main body
wing movement: i have a friend who might be able to help me with servos and stuff, but im looking for an easier alternative…i remember seeing somewhere that someone used rubberbands…if you look at the pictures, i have a hole in the back that i can use to twist something and extend the wings
i do not plan on using this for anything more than a display piece, but i would like it to be more than just a static model
the toggle switch on the face to move left and right
the silver buttons that hyperdyne uses to make the wings move
a friends little brother makes race cars that have servos and lights, and im trying to get in contact with him…if we make something, ill post it up here
OK… not so much figured out, as thrown enough money at.
I have a Hyperdyne PKE kit, and this same resin iona PKE shell.
$30 at a local hobby shop got me 2 micro servos, and I have a little experience with servos and linkages, so that won’t be a chore.
I’ll be posting pictures when I deem my work worthy.
But, there is a cheaper alternative to the Hyperdyne kit for servo control @ http://www.servocity.com… it controls a servo via a potentiometer. You can find a servo reverser for around $15 or less, that will split a servo signal to 2 servos, one reversed… that’s not bad, and the kit Servocity has will fit in an iona.
I’m sure there’s more to say… I’ll be back.
And I’m back.
As for lights, there’s some cool LED sequencers out there (I found some on ebay for abut $20)
There’s some that can do multiple patterns, and you can even wire several LEDs to each output… to say… make a screen, and both wings light up… and that is essentially all the LED part of the Hyperdyne kit is, except the sequence actually speeds up as the arms raise.
There’s a little 8 LED sequencer that runs on 3 volts that is plenty small to fit in the shell… in fact, I’m thinking about turning the buttons on the face of the PKE into additional lights, and there’s room for one of those cheapy sequencers, even with the out of stock expensive stuff in there.
Its similar to the one just suggested. It only conrols 1 servo so I’m using it in a pully type set up. An arm comes off the servo and slots into one of the wings. I’ve got the wings with the cogs that interlock. So when you pull one it makes the other move too.
I’ve stripped the guts out of the original box its built in and wired the 2 buttons away from the board. I’ve put then where the little silver one’s normally go so you still push one for up and one for down.
Still trying to work the lights out. Been trying to use one of them little led kits. Trouble is I cant find fine enough wire to run down the wings. I’m only running 5 lights each side but they mount up too thick when they’re all run and the arms struggle to move.
I’m still working on it. If I crack it i will ofcourse share my findings
