Hello! I’m about to start building my first proton pack fron scratch (no kits) and there’s a piece that I haven’t been able to find (the piece, or a suitable substitute) and I’m thinking of making it out of Plastimak; it’s the proton wand handle.
The wand calls for two of them and they are like the ones in the picture.
I took a 2x4 and drilled a 1.25" hole down it, cut grips and sanded it. Took about 20 minutes. Then coated it in wood glue so it had no grain. Check page 1st Scratch DOUBLE build FAST. Holy Moly this is a lot of work.
Yours look pretty cool, but I don’t have access to all the woodworking tools you have (I can consider myself lucky if I can borrow a dremel for a while). Anyways, thanks a lot for the quick answer.
I used EVA foam floor mats, cut 3 rectangles to the right size, then contact cemented them together. Then I used a dremel tool to carve out the finger grooves. Finished with a couple of coats of plastidip. Took about 30 min each minus drying time.
I used power drill, 1.25in spade drill bit ($9 a set) and a coping saw $9. You can then dremel sand it or hand sand it. If you don’t have a drill that is the first power tool everyone should buy.
I’ll try my initial plan: create a plastimak handle, I’ve found a weird plastic hot-dog container that will provide the perfect negative shape for the handle (I’ll post a picture later, as it’s hard to describe).
But if the plastimak doesn’t turn out as expected I’ll go for the eva foam mats.
I wrapped one of my aluminum handles in tin foil, then used sculpey to make the handles. I just made one and molded it. But its easy and cheap enough to just make two
Back in the day, I used to sell wood grips and they were all done with a table saw and a drum sander. I wonder how many people here still have them, if any, lol!
