SDCC 2013: Mattel Previews 1:12 Scale Ecto-1 + Figures

image

Today during the Mattypalooza panel at San Diego Comic Con, Mattel revealed one of the biggest additions to their 6inch Ghostbusters line to date: The Ecto-1.

Specs include:

•For the first time ever, the Ecto-1 is in scale to our 6” Ghostbusters™ figures so you can recreate scenes from the iconic first movie.

•This Ecto-1 will feature a pull-out rack for storing the removable proton packs that come with the new 6” Peter and Ray figures (sold separately).

•The headlights of the Ecto-1 will flash and the beacon will light up with both blue and red lights.

•The doors and trunk of the Ecto-1 will actually open so you can get your 6” figures and their gear inside!

•The authentic Ecto-1 signature ambulance siren lets bystanders know the Ecto-1 is coming.

•This Movie Masters® Epic Creations™ vehicle is made of highly detailed, hard plastic, with authentic Cadillac logos.

•The Ecto-1 features engine revving sounds recreated to sound just like in the film!

•This vehicle rolls on wheels to get around town fast… go get those ghosties!

Further details are yet to be confirmed, but we’ll bring them to you when we get them.

Additionally, Mattel have also announced the debut of the range of figures in the 6inch line which feature removable Proton Packs. Some may recall seeing prototypes of these popping up a while back on eBay, with speculation as to whether Mattel still planned on using the feature.

The slides from the show suggest they’ll appear on the Mattycollector website eventually, but you can get them bundled with the Ecto-1 if you purchase the car’s preorder.

The 6inch scale Ecto-1 is given a tentative retail price of $215, but only if they receive enough preorders.

Preorder page is now up Here!

My predictions for what we’ll see with this Ecto-1:

The Exterior:

*A reasonable replica of the original, with concessions made for the scale and production.

*Will look a little cheaper in appearance than the Hotwheels diecasts.

*Likely based on the post-restoration version of the car, with reversed Sniffer and incorrect bracket on the front lightbar.

*Only three of the doors will open: Driver, front passenger and the rear, like the old Kenner toy.

-Stuff that hopefully won’t be too difficult to fix if need be.

Interior:

*Black mounded plastic with possibly some sticker/paint detailing.

*Removable Proton Pack rack - will probably only fit two Packs, but it’d be nice if Mattel anticipate demand and design it to fit four.

Lights & Sound:

*Both blue police lightbars will light up, and maybe the red beacon. I don’t think we’ll see the four deck lights light up, but it’d be a nice surprise.

*Possibly working head and tail lights, possibly even the rocket cones in the fins.

*Standard Ecto-1 siren sound effect.

I’m up for this even if its half decent!

REALLY ROLLS!!!

New 6" figures means that GB1 Winston could drop on eBay.

Take that, gougers.

“This item is scheduled for fall 2014 shipment.”

If preorder expectation is met…bwahahaha!

My biggest issue is how do I get my hands on this one? I would like to get it, but I cant join the Mattycollector club whatever, since I dont have a creditcard, just PayPal. Any ideas anyone?

As for the product, I am happy…and a bit disappointed…I was hoping for a prop, not an ecto-1. Of course the kid in me is excited for getting this change…now if only I could pre-order one…

lol

I’m so glad it has wheels! Well done Matty!

This is way more surprising than a pack would have been. I never thought they’d do this, especially after all but declaring the six inch line dead and gone. I think this is really cool - I want to get it, but damn, that thing is going to be enormous.

$215 for just the car, $265 for the ‘attack pack’ (the car with 2 ‘removable pack’ figures)

I was really hoping for a 1:1 ‘prop’ proton pack. and Im not saying I wouldnt love a 6" scale Ecto for the figures. but that’s a buttload of money. especially when all we have to go on is a list and a photo of the actual Sony car.

Anyone willing to do the calculations in which we can get a guess how big this car will end up being?

Looks like around a foot and a half long, at least.

Damn, gonna have tear down some walls for it.

Called it

21 feet / 12 = 1.75 feet (or 21 inches.)

The price point is ridiculous. It’s almost the cost of 2 decent Matty props. I love that Matty is making this, but I feel like all they think those Ghostbuster fans will pay ANYTHING. If the price point comes down to what a prop costs, count me in.

Is there any existing 1:12 scale car out there for a reasonable comparison? By that I mean any model toy, not just the Ecto.
