I think it would be great if Ghostbusters 3 explained the relationship between the movies and the series.
That could be realized easily. For example, as Venkman was already the moderator of a TV-Show in Ghostbusters 2, it could be stated that he had been the Producer of the GB-Universe’s equivalent of the RGB-series and wrote the majority of episodes based on the Ghostbusters’ records. - It would be logical, since there’s a lot of money in doing that.
RGB would this way be turned semi-canonical to the movies, because nobody knows which parts are thought to correspond with the records and which are thought to be Venkman’s fiction.

“Hey, com’on! I just had to do something – otherwise the kids wouldn’t take notice of you.”
It’s a funny idea, but I would prefer it if they adapted some of the stories for the movie. Like how Slimer came to live with the Ghostbusters (I can just imagine Murray as Venkman saying to Ray and Egon “You’re trying to train Slimer?”), and just because it’s my favorite episode I want them to incorporate ‘Ghosts R Us’ into the mix.
Another great thing was to implement the most popular foes from RGB (Boogieman, Samhain, Grundel etc.) as jobs, or by a leak in the containment unit, which leads them to ally with the major opponent of the movie.
Always thought it would be neat to atleast see a quick blurb of a familiar RGB ghost during the montage of a new film, but he would have to be REALLY recognizable. I’d love to see the Boggieman just creep out of a closet during the ghost montage, coming up on a bed, just to have a new or old ghostbuster pop up from under the sheets to suprise him.
Another great trick would be to use an “movie-in-movie”-montage, which means that two movies are cut together in the way, that the figures of one movie watch the other, but are hidden at first to create the appearance as if the movie watched by the figures was the main film.
For example, if we combine that with the idea that Venkman created the RGB and EGB series, why not let the RGB-characters reenact a scene from one of the films? I.e. the final battle with the Stay Puft Marshmallow-man or with Vigo – however, I think Mr. Stay Puft would be best.
That would be a funny scene, showing the cartoon-styled battle with Mr. Stay Puft, then switch to the living room in the Firehouse with the first scene running on TV an the aged Ghostbusters and Slimer watching it, eating Popcorn.
Then a dialogue like the one between Ray and Winston after the Birthday party in Ghostbusters II…
“… yeah, yeah … and I never apologized for your Hairstyle!”
