Looking at it now, I realize the handle’s way beefier than it was on the prop. Gonna have to work on that.

This last week I was able to work on the model in more of a “cleanup” fashion; mostly addressing the various places I over-engineered the design and finishing up the mating so the parts assemble more smoothly. I have Wednesday and Thursday off work and hope to finish the front piece in that time and hopefully start on the main display.
If anyone sees this and has purchased a MakerBot, please send me a PM ASAP. I need to pick a brain or two!

Unfortunately, I’ve already got my own electronics package sorted and most of the parts ordered and on-hand already, as well as teaching myself Arduino and I’ll be starting on learning EAGLE as soon as the Giga model is finished. I’m still plugging away at the model, of course, so that may be a while. If you’ve got EAGLE experience, I could use some help in designing the boards for the electronics I’ve built this model around.
If you’ve got a set of digital calipers or something like that, I could use a few basic measurements (overall length/width/height, handle width/length/height, forward cylinder measurements and diameter, etc) on the scrubber to make sure that I’ve got this thing scaled right.

I will also be working on models of the Realistic Microphone ears, if only to fit them to the servos I have for the electronics kit. Since those will be far less complicated than the body of the Giga to model, I’m saving them for last.
@abaka: As soon as I have a working prototype done, I’ll be happy to discuss the various features I’ve thrown in. I’m using Arduino for the whole shebang.

And a little peek of the inside and how the parts come together. I’ve designed this around use of threaded inserts and screws you can pick up online or at most hardware stores.
That said, the first prototype will be based around this design. As soon as I get my hands on it, I can start working on a way to possibly design it around mold-based reproduction.

The most valuable advice I can give you is to be mindful of how you plan to divide up the object for printing on a MakerBot style printer. I’ve never really liked or trusted how well support media works on it, and I prefer to print sections of assemblies “pyramid style”, so they start printing with the fat area on the bottom and build upwards areas of equal or smaller cross section (negating the need for support media).
I see how you can divide this build very easily for optimal printing (limiting headaches, but increasing components to print.
If you’re printing a master for casting, this might be the way to go, anyway, as you can focus on really cleaning up each component before and during assembly of the master.

Thanks man. I saw a while back you got a Makerbot and was curious what you or others would have to suggest about it. If I get one, I’m definitely going for the 2X for the dual extrusion heads so I don’t need to worry so much about support material.
I have dual extrusion heads… And I took one off… I’ve found that the second head can drag on the work piece.

Having built and used a makerbot, this is not going to be an easy task. 3D printing is amazing, but it’s far from perfect and requires so much calibration, tweaking, and finishing work that I decided not to go that route in my attempt at the giga. I can just imagine the layer print lines all over and I cringe. If you go the 3d printing route, definitely stay away from makerbot if you want anything halfway decent.
I’m curious to know how you’re handling the dome. My way is accurate but it’s very time consuming to make.
As I said in the original post, I’ve got a friend that works at Stratasys who gets nigh-unlimited build material for his own projects as a job perk and access to their higher-end machines, so I’m thinking of getting a print from him to figure how to make a castable version. We’ll see, though. Any 3D printed version would naturally require clean-up and filling/sanding.
That’s one of the beauties of the Stratasys machines. It has a toggle head assembly, and actually raises and lowers the active nozzle by a few mm depending on which one is currently printing. Just enough to stay clear 99% of the time.
Plus a tip wiper that removes excess plastic and keeps it clean and out of the way.
The Replicator will get there soon now that Stratasys owns Makerbot, and they share patents.

Your post count and time on the board let buyers know you intend to stick around, and a membership can be obtained by simply contributing information on the wiki pages; your info on the Redman buffer in the wiki could earn your membership.IIt’d be a shame to see a good product and potentially good seller refuse service on such simple grounds.
Unfortunately, just because you have something… it doesn’t give you special treatment above all the others who do meet the requirements.
The Redman Buffer isn’t actually very rare. Not very many people have bothered making Giga Meters, so the demand hasn’t been great. I had no problem scoring one on eBay years ago when the demand for them was still quite high.
