I’ll give the movie a 65% chance of being awful. The committee way it was put together and the fact that it is a reboot or reimagining or whatever rankle me.
Then again, I like the cast and I like what I’ve seen so far from the set. I also think Feig is a good director and that means a lot.
So I still think there is definitely a slim chance the movie will be good. Today I’m at a 35% chance of it not sucking.
Though committee’s voice is always heard in big films like this, particularly franchises, I don’t think that’s an accurate description of this film. Everything I’ve read made it sound like Feig was asked to do their film over and over and he turned it down. Finally, he agreed to do it as long as his vision would be used. That’s why we’re seeing reboot and a female team. It’s not as safe as a paint by number film and the naysayers on this board prove that. Heck, even the ones looking forward to it do so cautiously.
10 bucks he walks away from the sequel and any Hollywood tentpole film after the fiasco that making this has been for him. The man has been beat up at every turn.
I still think Feigbusters 2 is still likely, but I don’t know about Feig’s involvement. It really stinks how much he’s been beaten up over this. He went to visit kids in the hospital for goodness sakes and is beaten up their, too.
Feig has never had a movie reach $500 million. Feigbusters won’t make that kind of number. It will be lucky to make $200 million. It will get lost in between the Star Wars and Marvel Movies.
I honestly think that’s a really low estimate world wide. I don’t have any reason to expect huge numbers from this film yet (need to see the finished product first), but his R rated comedies make a little bit more than $200 million already. If you consider that this will be opened to a broader audience, will have toys luring the kiddies, and a big ol’ no ghost logo on it, I could see this making around $400 million.
You also can’t ignore the most recent Jurassic World phenomenon. I mean, who saw that coming? Decent film, but it’s making numbers I can’t imagine anyone thought it would. The question is whether or not ghost busting will strike a chord like the return of man eating dinosaurs. That general audience can really defy expectations.
Yeah but also Jango, the marketing machine has been killer for Jurassic World, especially from a merchandise stand point. The JW stuff stared appearing in commercials started appearing a month or more before the film started and dinosaurs are a draw to both sexes. With this new film carrying female leads and the merchandise leaning to females there won’t be the same saturation as JW had because they have nothing to capture the male demo like Star Wars or Marvel do. That’s why Disney bought both of them to capture the boy market since they pretty much have girls locked in with the princesses. So there’s a very real possibility that while yes this film will make money, it won’t have the same draw because it won’t have the same appeal to families with male children
All great points. I’m no expert on children, but I do know my boys are excited. If they deliver on scary ghosts, awesome gizmos, and ghost wrangling, they’ll be good, but I know that doesn’t represent everyone. Just a point that not all boys nowadays avoid things with girls. They actually like Sophia the First, too.
They have to make roleplaying toys. That’s the one thing girls and boys can enjoy after the movie. It’s all they want to play with now, my ol’ Kenner pack. Don’t know if we’ll get a traditional action figure line aside from, possibly, Diamond Select. It would be cool if they did a Multiverse type line from Mattel and mixed the New Ghostbusters with the old movie characters and Real Ghostbusters.
Everyone knows Ghostbusters. That’s why the studio has greenlighted a $150 million budget. Nostalgia will bring a lot of people out, the trailers and big-budget effects will bring some people out, and just the fact that everyone knows the concept of Ghostbusters (even after 25 yrs since last movie) will bring people out.
The opening weekend will most likely be huge. After that, depends on word of mouth and reviews.
Honestly, even though I think there is a 64% chance the movie will be bad, I’ll go out on a limb and say $300 million worldwide is the floor of the picture. It would have to be abysmal to make less than that in a world where Expendables movies pull in that much.
The ceiling is prob more than $500 million if by some chance it’s actually good.
Jango, Not all boys but let’s face it, it’s harder for boys to project onto the characters if there’s no male characters to relate to. My son doesn’t have any interest in this new movie (and surprisingly no, I haven’t bad mouthed it or anything, I only showed him pictures of the ladies and the equipment and stuff). but even with role playing stuff released, it will still be a hard sell to boys because they can’t be their favorite character because again, no male characters to imitate (Hemsworth aside, because I have a feeling he’s going to be an idiot).
It’s awesome that your guys are excited but I’m sure there will be a lot of little boys out there that will see that its all girls and not be interested in it. It’s why gender stereotyping sucks. It only causes segregation in certain regards and in the case of drawing a wider audience, unless the trailer really blows everyone away, I just don’t see the vast marketing appeal to families with boys. So yeah the movie will make money but it will be more to an adult fanbase and obviously to families with girls because they have 4 new heroes to look up to and emulate. I wonder when all the smoke clears if a sequel happens it will involve a mixed team to maximize the marketability across the board.
I have four boys and I understand what you mean how they cannot or won’t relate to the four female Feigbusters. What are the chances that my 9 and 7 year old are going to want action figures of the Feigbusters? Zero. Nada. And the Baribe Feigbusters? Not a chance in hell. Sony should have demanded that Feig used a mixed cast of busters.
Totally understand and agree. Mine are a bit younger at 4. Is till hope there is a presence in the boys aisle even if they have to use old movie and animated series stuff. I am antsy to see something about Hemsworth’s character and whether or not he suits up.
Hey, now we have less time to wait. The film’s moved up to the 15th.
I wonder what a movie with, say, Ernie Hudson as Winston training this same group of female actors to be the “next generation” of Ghostbusters would have been like? And what kind of business tha movie would do compared to the one we are getting?
Am I wrong in reading all the leaks and information from the Sony emails; the bulk of this film is an origin story? That would be disappointing since I find origin story films to be rather dull. The original film, the “origin” story aspect comprises at best the first 1/3 of the film and after that it’s over and we, as viewers, are made to believe that they are “professionals” who have been doing this for quite some time (the complete sense of apathy from Venkman and Stantz when they meet Zeddemore).
