Store Bought Ghostbusters Halloween costume

I dont know if this is really the right place to put this, and if it has to be moved to another section, I apologize.

I’m just curious about the store bought GB costume. It comes with a inflatible proton pack and wand. Has anyone ever seen one up close? Does it even look like a movie pack? I’ve never seen one and I want to know how good or bad of a job they did trying to reproduce a proton pack. I noticed the flight suit they provide at least has the diagonal zippers on the chest, and the wand has what looks like a heat sync on it.

I think every store bought costume trying to replicate someone from a movie really sucks. I’ve never seen a good one…although, I am a big fan of having somthing that looks authentic.

If anyone has any good pics of the inflatible proton pack, post em up. I wanna compare it to a screen accurate prop!

Though most people here will tell you it’s horrible. I’ll say…I don’t think it’s that bad. For what it is, its whats to be expected I guess. I have a more accurate suit/belt etc now but at the time it was getting close to halloween so…it was the way to go for me.

A lot of the details of the proton pack are there you can see. The wand is probably the biggest disappointment. It is very flimsy. The “hose” between the pack and the gun is quite pathetic. It’s actually the same inflatable plastic so its kinda lame. One of the straps on my pack broke. I’ve had it awhile. I think I did it accidentally putting it on. Its fixable.

Like I said its generally considered a sin around these parts… :boogieman: hehe but if you have to, honestly accessorized with, it can be rather cool. Everyone loved it at the party I went to and only one person commented on the inflatable pack. I think accessorized with if you get a belt, pads, gloves, boots. etc it can be pretty sweet for a last minute effort. In the hands of a ghosthead that is. Just seeing the stock picture with the guy in just the suit and backpack is quite lame I think.

http://www.buysuperherocostumes.com/ghostbusters.html There are some other pics. The gun is very awkward. I rarely even bothered trying to hold it.

Those are some of my main thoughts on it. I’ve had it awhile and still don’t regret wearing it. At the time, it felt awesome. Now with my other suit, I doubt I’ll ever wear the Rubies one again. It’s cool to have, as a fan anyway I think. The suit is kind thin so at times you can see whats under if you have a shirt with print or something. The suit is more of a yellowish khaki color. As long as you have fun being a Ghostbuster! If you have to be a Ghostbuster in a hurry..

I guess in the end, long story short, it is what it is. :whatever:

im actually quite impressed with the details that the Rubies company does keep consistent with the actual packs!..like you said it’s good for what it is.

Hmmm…thats not as bad as I thought it would be. The pack actually is pretty good for a 2-D reproduction. And like you said, if you deck out the rest of the costume with gear, it dosent look half bad.

What I would like to see is if anyone can make a 3-D inflatable pack that looks really really good. That could be a really cool unique project if anyone knew how to mold that kind of plastic. How cool would it be to inflate a proton pack that has all the same demnsions (more or less) of a screen acurate pack!

Although the pack has been scorned many times in the prop building community I think it does the job to an extent. If the outfit is dressed up with some extras (pads, utility belt, goggles, etc.) it really isn’t too bad. I saw one earlier this year at an 80s party and the guy looked pretty good. He even added wire loom for the hose going from the pack to the gun, and put on sticky red reflectors for the cyclotron lights.. It does the trick if you’re in a hurry and don’t want to spend much.

I still wish for the day they make a durable official “big boy toy” version of the movie packs with lights and sound. If it was sold for $100 or under I think People would buy these things up like nobodies business. I mean, could you imagine the simplicity of buying a good quality pack at a decent retail price from a local collector/comic shop? that would be awesome indeed. On the other hand though, I guess that would kind of take the fun out of the process of building one.

I def agree!

I’m wondering if anyone has seen/bought the *other *store-bought GB costume’s pack in any detail? It appears to be non-inflatable plastic. And with a coat of paint and some stickers, might make a good budget pack. What do you think?

I have put together my own costume, flight suit, belt, pads, gloves, patches, hose etc, but I am too busy/lazy to build a proper proton pack. Anybody have any experience with or pictures of the pack on this one?

OR does anyone know of a place/person that sells vacu-formed proton packs for less than $100?

Let me put it this way…

You get what you pay for.

It’s good if you planning to do it just once or twice. If you planning to do it all the time, I say spend the time and money and make the uniform yourself. The uniform is the most easiest one to do yourself. If you up to the challenge than make your own proton pack.

My personal opinion…it sux. It looks really, really cheap. :boogieman:

If you are going to a costume party at a bar and plan to dance around drunk guys and girls…an inflatable pack sounds like the only way to go.

I believe that other picture is a early picture. It was never released that way. At one point I think it was supposed to be cardboard!

anyone saw the female version?

I’m thinking about getting it to use the backpack proton pack as a kid’s costume accessory…

hahaha o man, that robocop costume!!! ahahhaha

Of course it’s cheap! That’s the point. I got it this year because I had no time to make a pack for Halloween, and it’s kind of a piece of shit, but it did the job. The right strap broke and I couldn’t figure out how to reattach it properly so I tossed it after Halloween.

Amen to that… I DO plan on doing this next Halloween, which is why I will be making a cheap cardboard version of the pack. It won’t be screen accurate, but if I drop $25.00 into it and the drunkies demolish it, oh well, no huge loss… I do plan on taking “Before Bar” and “After Bar” pictures of it… Should be interesting to see the difference.

cool ideas. But you dont get the fun of being in a pitch black bar with superbright LED’s dazzling all those who stare to long at your pack. then you dont get the feeling of the one genuine gb fan who can see you’ve put great effort into your costume and tells you it looks amazing.

But then you dont get the hassle of the bathroom shenanigans!

The guys in my group say this Proton pack may be used as flotation device.

It looks OK. But there’s a lot of mistakes on the designs. Still, it could of been worse, at least the size is just about right. I never bought one, I’m thinking about it though.

I’ve actually tried something like this. I made templates for a printable proton pack, and here were the results;

Not bad, in my opinion. Just a note, I printed this in black and white to save ink, so it DOES have to color. It was kind of a test too, so I don’t waste color ink in case it didn’t work. Up side is, it’s pretty 3-dimensional, down side, the size is only 11 x 7 inches lol.
