Has anyone ordered one of the shells that Studio Creations sells? I was thinking of ordering one, but wanted to hear some input, if any is available about these shells. I’d love a V71, but I don’t have enough cash.
I originally ordered one of these until I got a shell from gbrob off of ebay. It is a vacu-form shell so it will not be 100% accurate. However, if this is your first pack and you are on a tight budget it isn’t a bad way to go.
How much are they?
Andy not all vaccu shells are inaccurate,I own a Java vaccu shell it is very accurate,it’s all about how accurate the bucks are.
I think what Andy means here is that the original shells were fiberglass with a resin gel coat so if you were to make or buy a pack that was made from any other material it would already be different from the screen used pack. I won’t get into the 100% screen accurate thing here but if anyone had any hope of doing such a thing then they could never use a vac form shell no matter how dimensionally accurate it was.
All vacuum formed shells suffer from lack of sharp details, and need structural reinforcement, as well as usually a good deal of cleanup to get rid of webbing…
Java’s shells were probably the DeFacto of vacuum form shells in regards to accuracy but they still suffered from the above as it’s simply a product of the process, you can minimize the effects but they are generally all still there to some degree… But on the flip size the process is faster and cheaper then the other alternatives…
As for the Studio Creations pack, I believe the first line on the page says it all…
Corners were cut, and overall accuracy suffered… It’s still a reasonable facsimile of the pack and will most likely make a decent looking pack for those that don’t care about details, and the price is very reasonable…
Exactly, thanks Thor.
For 65 bucks, not bad. You could take them and clean up the areas that really need it. I’d sand down all of the fins and do them over again. Just fixing up the fins and whatever webbing there is from the vac forming would really make the world of difference.
I purchased my shell from Java Monkey. I think he is still in the prototyping stage and might not be offering too many of them right now, if he is offering them at all. I had some problems with it, and I had to put a lot of work into it to bring it up to my satisfaction, but the base is there, and it might be worth trading your hard work for the savings.
