The V71 Mark X ~ Fiberglass Shell

Yeah, i suppose. It would just be nice to have a motherboard made specifically to your shell.

I don’t get all this chatter about motherboard supply complaints.. the packs I can understand because they are complex, but the motherboard is just.. um.. a board cut to shape.

It’s just NOT that hard to place a pack shell down on a board, trace it, and then add the extra bits at all.

Are the “new” measurements by Sean from Ken’s pack available (and by that I mean the version 2 that was alluded to above, not Sean’s v1 plans).

Because letting the community as a whole have the more accurate measurements would be a great for us all. I know I’d like to try and build my own pack rather than buy a shell (though I may end up doing that).

Also - from what I remember Ken’s pack was a GB2 Cast (and certainly looked like it). Which means it’s measurements will be a little funky compared to a hero pack (which are all in prop shows I think).

Anyhow… random segue over… back to the point - is there any chance of us seeing those figures?

Not to be a pest, but I still wanna see some pics of the other parts you’re casting for this.

They’ve already said that Stefan’s plans were spot on except for the couple details that have been pointed out numerous times. All the measurements available on this site will help you build an accurate pack.

As suggested above, Stefan’s plans are damn close… As for Sean’s measurements, to the best of my knowledge no he has not released them, but my shell offering should reflect them as it was built to those measurements…

Working on them, they will like the shell the HGA will be based off Sean’s version but tweaked, for the N-filter I might or might not use Sean’s… There is anything wrong with it but the casting is a little warped and by the time I get it tweaked back into shape I could build a new one… No sense molding a slightly warped part…

What’s the “proper” size of the n filter? We used a 3" black abs pape part, a 3" esting cap (you’d need to remove the raised lettering since testing caps all seem to have them), and then we drilled out the holes in it with a drill hole cutter attachement.

the standby old pringles cans fit perfectly inside those, and the pipe thickness looks pretty good.. that might make an excellent mold base.

Only thing I did incorrectly was use too large a hole cutter, but I still have enough to make two more n filters, so I might replace ours with more correct ones if the mood hits me.

Stefan’s plans state 2.75" mine (Sean’s) is 2.87"… 2 1/2 PVC works well, as it’s 2.87 OD…

I’ve been using ABS coupling which is 2.75" for the NFilter… should I go ahead and use the 2 1/2" PVC before I secure what I have?

Sean’s measurements as far as I’m aware were off of a screen used pack, so I think the 2.87" diameter is the one to use IF you can accommodate the change in your pack design. This is 1/8" bigger in diameter which means that from the center you’ll need an extra 1/16" for the n-filter to expand.

Also keep in mind that if your pack was designed around a 2.75" diameter n-filter a 2.87" may look a little off to you. When I look at packs I am not so much concerned about 32nds of an inch but I do look at how the pieces fit together. I’m not going to bug anyone because their n-filter is 1/8" too small. I may chime in though if it is hanging off the edge of the cyclotron spacer. That’s just me personally. Now, if you made your n-filter 3.5" or something grossly out of proportion to the rest of the pack that’s probably something someone may notice. However we are only talking about a radius change of only 1/16". If the pack parts all fit together like they should the only people who are going to bother you are the ones obsessive enough to carry a ruler around and measure your pack.

Just my 2 cents.

Except the details that have been pointed out have never been put in one place. Couple that with the better measurements of Sean’s that Exoray has - which noone knows right now - and someone (and I’m happy to do it for the record) could edit Stefan’s plans with the correct measurements - meaning we’d all have nice shiny new plans that are as accurate as we are likely to get.

It could give back to the community as whole - for fans now and the future.

[edit - removed snarky attack, that was lame of me]

Soo… and I totally understand your reasons if this is the case, but I want to clarify… to know the measurements we’ll have to buy one of your packs.. and so not be able to build our own from scratch?

I just enjoy building things.. that’s all. It’s not like there wouldn’t be more work ahead if I bought this from you.. I just would like to build it from scratch as close as possible. Stefan’s plans are great, but they have obvious problems and there have been some noticed improvements since they were created (I’ve fixed a bunch of them in my draft plans, but not all… not sure I know all of them).

This is why I ask. Community good and all that.

I have already talked this over with Stefan himself, he is willing to revise the plans and release a newer set… I had started to assemble all the known issues for his plans in one thread on Proptopia but interest fizzled pretty quick and nothing became of it…

I feel it’s only polite if we are going to asked Stefan to revise the plans that we assemble and present the data for him at one time in completeness… After all he has already given so much, for free…

And if anyone is going to provide any changes to his plans they should be based of the real screen used packs and reference not fan builds like this shell…

I don’t know the measurements, I know the measurements I have taken off of one of Sean’s shell while I reworked it… There is a distinct difference from knowing the numbers or simply stealing them from someone else’s build… My shell is essentially a recast (with permission) of Sean’s shell with revisions done to it by me… Revisions I did after carefully studying reference photos and doing scaling and sorts, the same as anyone else can do if they are inclined…

To provide a set of plans based off the shell as is, wouldn’t be providing a set of plans off the real shell, it would be reverse engineering Sean’s and my shell, in essense just short of recasting it… The shell I’m offering is still a fan built shell, I can’t say if it’s more accurate then any other, who knows where it might be off, but it is different then Stefan’s plans and I have detailed clearly the big differences… As it stands I did many little tweaks and touchups all over Sean’s shell stuff I felt wasn’t correct or needed tweaking based on my observations… Whether I made it more or less accurate in doing so is anyones guess… I have never touched a real shell so all my information was based on reference photos and digital overlays like I posted above in regards to the motherboard, anyone can do the same thing if they are inclined…

Yeah I understand it’s all a semantics, but as have stated the measurements Sean took of Ken’s pack and the work he did is not mine to publicize and I simply don’t have it, all I have is one of Sean’s shells… If Sean or Ken decides to release information they obtained from the real shell that is their business and their business alone, as far as I’m concerned both have given more then I would have expected and asked for nothing in return…

Again taking measurements off of this shell is simply reverse engineering a fan build not providing accurate measurements off a real shell… There is a difference… Really… I believe this shell is closer then many but it’s still not accurate, just closer to accurate in my opinion, others might disagree…

IMO Sean has already been more then gracious in letting me bring this shell to the public as is, I would hope most would simply be happy with that, as his shells have been highly desired for years but only offered in very, very limited numbers…

I sincerely hope MR follows through on these licensed packs, and I hope they are recasts of one of the original packs. That would put an end to these debates between certain people over their unhealthy obsessions with meticulousness. hypocrisy!

Exoray - I understand now. Sorry for the badgering - I’m just keen to make sure that the community as a whole benefits. There are a LOT of details that aren’t in Stefan’s plans, as awesome as they are, and we’re running the risk of having several walled gardens of cliques who know certain things.

For some reason I thought you had access to Sean’s measurements that he and Ken took, and based your pack from those.

I guess then my questions over measurements should be addressed to Sean/Ken? Or have they made a statement on the matter before?

MR sucks. Their quality is awful. They are never going to be able to bring a quality pack in for the price point they said - I doubt we’ll ever see a pack from them - 50% of their announced line for 2008 never showed up. The stuff that did is injection molded plastic and poorly finished metal casts.

Plus - I doubt they’ll cast from an original. They’ll probably just make some basic measurments and mock one up. If we do see it then it won’t be any better (and I would be it will be worse) than a home built pack.

Welcome to the hobby, not everyone likes to share and I respect their decision, as they certainly are not obligated in my mind… It’s certainly nice when they do, but I never expect it…

I believe in the end they stated that Stefan’s plans were so damn close that we should just continue to use them as they produce packs that literally look better then the originals already…

Don’t hold your breath, for one MR has a pretty poor announcement to release record… Second they have only offered a few cast off original props, almost every item they have ever sold was an idealized new render of the prop based on information/scans/measurements from the real prop… Third 99% of the population doesn’t and would not pay for a faithful reproduction of the GB packs as seen on screen, after all they were simply “rough” The generally target audience and public wants sparkly new scratch and dent free toys…

Well, I know MR is known for their exaggerated claims and unrealized promises, but if they don’t do it, then someone should.

Wouldn’t casting from an original yield a non accurate GB1 pack anyway, since all were modified for GB2?

There never WILL be an accurate GB1 pack, because none are in existence to measure and reproduce.

Also, the original packs didn’t make sounds.. they were all added in postwork after the fact.

So homebrew packs today are actually superior then what the originals would offer in some cases, wouldn’t they?

In the end yes… Just not “screen accurate” in the respect they don’t share all the imperfections and sorts that the originals had… The originals were wonky in all sorts of ways, lots of surface blemishes from huge sanding scratches to uneven spacing, to simply what amounts to looking like Playdough construction technique…

Just look at this original gun tip, honestly unless you are beyond ■■■■ about screen accuracy who would build it like this? And I’m all for accuracy just not to that degree…
