Shit, I think Sony is trying to get Jason Reitman to direct with Ivan as somewhat of a co-director.
The office writers supposedly wrote the script for GBIII and Jason directed an episode of The Office…

Back in january Reitman said that he’ll direct GB3.
This is the point: REITMAN SAID.
He’s the only one saying that he will be the director, we haven’t heard anything official by Sony about GB3’s director.
maybe Sony has a young director in mind from the beginning and only now they uncover their cards.
Except that Jason has said he doesn’t want to do it - and all things considered, why would a young director working hard (and succeeding) to earn his own name, take over for his dad’s most famous comedy?
Jason was on Kevin Pollack’s Chat Show and explained that he turned down Dude, Where’s My Car? three times while trying to get Juno made - he wants to make his own movies, so it’s a long, looong shot that Sony wants him to direct.
It’s not impossible and the family connection makes it look obvious, but I don’t think it’s as straight forward as that.
Point taken… I almost hate even saying GBIII now. It’s getting tiring.
come on Sony…The Smurf’s movie is moving forward more quickly…THE SMURFS MOVIE, FOR CHRIST SAKE!!
It seems clear the studios want a younger name to helm the film to make it hip for this generation.
I don’t get it, don’t they realize lots of ‘this younger’ generation grew up with those films, and don’t want a new snazzy name to helm it. :sigh:

Well to be honest. I knwo Ivan said he didn’t have fun making Ghostbusters 2, and with new writes and new busters in the mix, it would make sense to get a new point of view to tell the story. I’m sure Ivan would servre a a better producer than a director. BUt those are just my thoughts. I’m sure if he really wants a GB3 to happen, he’ll side step and let some one witha bit more talent direct.

The more I hear about “Ghostbusters III”, the less I like.
What have you heard about GB3 that would spoil the movie?
I mean it’s a good thing they’re passing it off, we don’t want GB3 to be just like GB 1 or 2. What else would they have walking down the streets?
As for the BIll Murray as a Ghost premise, I’m down for anything. The whole point of sequels are to either continue a story or to tell a new one. GB2 did neither, it just repeated the first.
If you want GB3 to be just like GB2, then I’d rather not have a GB3 at all. However, I am interested in what the new generation will bring to the table.
And I really could liev without Reitman behind the camera…he’s 62…what type of energy cana 62 year old bring to the franchise…only time will tell.
If bruce willis can still do action flicks, i think Ivan can handle directing… granted the most recent willis movie with that tracy morgan guy wasn’t exactly a blockbuster, and that’s being kind… but Ivan is familiar with Ghostbusters… I still want to see him back.

Peter Venkman being a ghost adds very little to the story, this has been a plot point I’ve hated since I first heard… and will be going up on the above list if confirmed.
I don’t know what he could do, but how do you presume to know what a 62-year-old is and isn’t capable of? Harrison Ford slid back into the role of Indiana Jones easily despite his age.
On the whole, you seem just a tad too happy to accept all these changes in the name of freshening up the franchise.
The whole “younger, hipper” director thing doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Even Todd Philips (director of “The Hangover” and Old School) said that what makes a good comedy is mostly just writing and acting. Besides who’s young and hip right now in comedy besides Judd Apatow?
It’s not clear at all - it’s a single report by NY Magazine saying they have the inside, but un-named source that says Sony would like a new director. That article is now reposted everywhere, each site adding their own spin, which makes it seem bigger or truer story than it is. In the end, it’s no a for sure, it’s just what they’ve heard.
The examiner went to Sony about it (the only site I’ve yet seen that did so) and Sony said that no, Reitman is their director all the way. Which can also be true. Both can be true; Sony has been privately talking about a new director and when publically asked, they’ll always say Reitman is the guy. Because on paper, he is - there’s no point (in fact it would be disasterout) for them to say otherwise at this stage.
The thing is it’s not about a snazzy new director to appeal to an audience - in this case especially, audiences are responding to the brand, not who’s directing. The new director is about who they trust to turn in the best film, and that’s based entirely on recent performance;
In the 80s, Reitman directed 7 movies that brought in 734 Billion dollars. Since then he’s made 6 movies that grossed 264 Billion. And I know you guys have a tough time with this, but the people in control, the people with the money to make this movie, that’s all they see - how much return will they get for their investment.
Sony is already on-board with Ghostbusters and the fans. All last year, and continuing this year, they’ve done a lot of stuff that says “we believe in the potential of this property”, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. It’s kind of a big deal that they did that, as a major international corporation. But that’s on small stuff - the video game was the biggest project to date, and even it was comparatively small change. Making a movie requires a whole other level of corporate commitment.
That said, they’re not interested in cutting Reitman out entirely - not just because they can’t, but because regardless of their faith in him as a director, he’s still a top of the pile producer. And producers aren’t always in the backseat - it is possible for a producer to play a part in driving a film creatively. Just as the new script isn’t going anywhere if Ramis and Aykroyd aren’t happy, the movie will need a strong producer.
The biggest problem right now is that Reitman’s Friends With Benefits starts in May - that makes it a hugh challenge to get GB3 made in time for 2011.
