Walter Peck....

When I was a kid I hated Walter Peck. He was an obvious villain. But now that I’ve watched him as an adult I realize that he’s not!

He (understandably) does not believe in ghosts. So he (also understandably) thinks the Ghostbusters are frauds. That’s fine. Let the frauds have their fake business. Phony psychics do it all the time. People sell fake medallions to ward of evil spirits. The Ghostbusters are no different in Pecks mind.

But then he see’s them in action. He see’s an actual energy release from their equipment. Now he says to himself “That could be dangerous! They could accidentally fry someone (say, perhaps a hotel cleaning lady). Not only that, but I’ve notice a lot of people claiming to see weird things since these guys showed up. Why are they seeing things? Whats making them see things? Are these Ghostbusters making them hallucinate? How? With drugs? And what kind of energy was coming out of their back packs, anyway? Could it be nuclear? Are they creating waste!?”

This is a man who works with the Environmental Protection Agency. He has a responsibility to stop these maniacs at all costs!

If the Ghostbusters were frauds Peck would have been considered a hero for stopping them, or if he let them be he would have been fire for letting them go and his only argument would have been “They need to catch ghosts.”

Really? Ghosts!? If I were his boss I’d make sure Peck would never work for the government again!

Nice thoughts you had!

Yeah, Peter should have just given him the children’s tour with a free mug and balloon.

Then again, if I was Peter, I might have been skeptical of his motives from the start. Especially since he shows up out of the blue showing no identification and demands to see equipment that indeed probably violates a few public safety laws.

Not to mention, Peter really has no idea how most of the equipment works. Especially the containment unit. So for all Peter knows, they could be dumping radioactive waste into the sewer or releasing toxic gas into the atmosphere. He probably already suspects the Proton Packs are making him sterile.

If Peck was to find a problem with the equipment, the Ghostbusters would be instantly shut down. Since, financially, they were in a tight spot after starting Ghostbusters (Ray’s 3rd mortgage and all), I’m sure he didn’t want to do anything that endangered losing that paycheck.

The problem I don’t think is that he’s doing his job, it’s that he’s such a smarmy ginger about it. And aren’t those the worst villains of all?

Stupid souless gingers…

Yes, we gingers are a smarmy breed; maybe our total lack of a “soul” has some kind of connotation. Sadly, Walter Peck represents your typical 1980s ■■■■■■■■■, up there in the pantheons alongside William Zabka (The Karate Kid) and James Spader (Pretty In Pink and Less Than Zero) to name a few. I know he was just doing his job, but did he really have to come across as such a smug jerk while doing it. Plus, he is the one who is sole responsible for shutting down the containment unit, freeing the trapped ghosts, and thus unleashing Gozer’s arrival upon the unsuspecting populace. Yes, truly a resume built for a ■■■■■■■■■.

I now fear The Rockman. The eyes pierce the mind.

I had thoughts when I saw it on the big screen a few weeks ago that Venkman sees Peck as Dean Yeager

another authority figure who doesn’t take him seriously…

his hesitance to call him “Doctor” Venkman, before the “your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe”

then later Peck keeps referring to him as Mister Venkman even when he says “yes, I’m Doctor Venkman”

Yeah I could see that. Peter has a problem with authority and likes to challenge it. I can certainly see where he’s coming from from how Dean Yager threw them onto the street.

Peck’s a government prick who showed up unannounced on private property demanding to inspect proprietary equipment simply because of rumors in the media.

When Venkman rightfully refused to allow a government goon onto his property, Peck then obtained warrants to enter the building. Who knows what kind of lies and misinformation Peck used to obtain the warrants. Peck then destroyed expensive equipment essential to the Ghostbusters’ business without any evidence of wrongdoing, simply to serve a personal vendetta.

That is why Peck is a villain. Fuck you, Peck.
