What are your thoughts on Spider-Man returning to Marvel?

I’m a little disappointed. Not because I don’t want Spider-Man to interact with the Avengers but because I really wanted to see Amazing Spider-Man series continue to see Peter cope with Gwen’s death and maybe end up meeting MJ who would help him through it. Also I’m probably in the minority but I prefer Peter being an adult to Peter being a teenager. Marvel has confirmed they’re putting him back in highschool and they’re wanting someone 18 to 20 to play him. I’ve also heard a rumor that they want him to be in highschool for the foreseeable future in movies. I really don’t like this. I really really don’t want to see Flash as a bully again! We’ve already seen that twice. The only way I’m okay with them putting him back in highschool is if they put Liz Allen into the movie. She later became Harry’s wife in the comics and had a son with him.

I wish they could just have Peter in college instead. The 90s cartoon did that and it was good. I really don’t want to see Peter as the outcast with only a few friends. I want the assertive Peter I grew up reading who has lots of friends and people who care about him besides Aunt May, MJ, and Harry.

I disliked the Spider-Man reboot movies a lot. The first one was cheap and dumb and the second one was one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. It wasn’t even funny-bad. It was insultingly bad.

Marvel has made some good to great films and I doubt Spidey will be any different. My problem is: I don’t care. We’ve already had 5 Spider-Man movies and, sure, they’ve had varied success but we’ve pretty much seen it all before. 5 times before. What can Marvel possibly bring to the table that’s different enough to justify another movie?

You could say the same thing about Batman. Batman had a 10 year hiatus between movies, Batman Begins focused on a part of Batman’s story we hadn’t seen before and it did so with a completely new and different style than what we’d seen before.

We’ve seen Spider-Man in high school. And college. And as an adult. We’ve seen him with Mary Jane and Gwen. Seen Gwen die, seen him marry Mary Jane. We’ve seen different takes on his origin. We’ve seen a big chunk of his famous villains, gone though his costume changes. We’ve seen the angst and the upbeat slapstick and the smartass backtalking and just about everything there is to see about him.

So… what’s left to care about? Just that it might be done right this time? Is that really enough reason to care?

We haven’t seen him interact with other superheroes before. So I guess there’s that.

It’d gotten to the point where Spidey needed to come home to Marvel. Sony mucked things up by rebooting the series so soon after the last of Raimi’s films (and I will admit I liked the first Garfield Spider-Man movie… I haven’t seen the second one yet), that between rebooting it so soon and the failures of Spider-Man 3, Marvel had to step in to do as much damage limitation as possible.

I’m in the minority but I prefer Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2 to the Raimi films. I think Garfield’s Peter was more like the comics. I get tired of people saying Peter needs to be a shy awkward nerd. He maybe a tiny bit shy and awkward in the comics but not as much as Toby Maguire’s Peter. Heck, in the first issue of Spider-Man Amazing Fantasy#15 Peter asks a girl out and this is before he even gets bitten by the spider. Yet in Raimi’s film Peter is incapable of even talking to girls in his class. Even after the spider bite he can’t talk to women very well at all. He never becomes assertive in his personal life after the spider bite in Raimi’s films either. He just stays the same shy awkward nerd for all 3 movies.

In the comics he became more confident and assertive after the spider bite and got pretty girls like Liz Allen, Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy, and Mary Jane interested in him. It also doesn’t help that in Spider-Man 2 and 3 MJ acts like a jerk to Peter. It doesn’t help that they really don’t seem to know each other well. This is evident in Spider-Man 1 at the beginning where Peter is thinking outloud about what he wants to say to MJ and he says, “Maybe we could get to know one another.” But they really don’t get close and their relationship never works out. Outside of the fact MJ’s pretty and attractive there seems to be no reason why Peter wants to be with her.

Anyway, I know most people don’t agree with me on this but I really prefer the reboot cause I feel it’s closer to the comics than the Raimi films except for a few things. I will say Electro and Rhino aren’t my favorite villains but I thought they were done fine in Amazing Spider-Man 2. I loved both Amazing Spider-Man movies. I’d give them both an 8/10. I won’t say they’re perfect but I enjoy them. I’m about to spoil the ending of Amazing Spider-Man 2 so don’t read the next thing I say that’s in spoiler tags Lando Systems. Also I am a fan of Star Wars The OT too. I am glad we finally got the deaths of George and Gwen Stacy in movies which couldn’t ever be done in Raimi’s films. Even if it wasn’t done exactly like the comics.

The reason Marvel doesn’t have the full rights to Spider-Man in film-form is because Sony still has the rights to it, just as Fox still has the rights to X-Men (in all forms in that case). If Sony were to stop making the films or take a break from doing them, Disney aka Marvel would get the rights in all the forms. They just made a deal with Marvel to have him in one of their films. So, Sony has the power to choose which actor they want, how he is to be used, and if it works for them or not. When there is to be a Spider-Man stand-alone film, it will be in the hands of Sony and Sony alone.

Actually I’m pretty sure Marvel has creative control. Plus it’s been confirmed that both Marvel and Sony are using Tom Hollond for Spider-Man. It’s also been confirmed that RDJ will be in the new Spider-Man movie as Iron Man. Plus Kevin Fiege is one of the the producers of the film. I maybe wrong but it really doesn’t look like Sony and Marvel are using different actors for Spider-Man.

Well, Sony picked Tom Holland. So, as long as that is settled it will be the same person.

Spiderman has done nothing for me for years now. they only do one thing: smell of money. when you watch these pitiful marvel films, you can’t help but feel and see that it was just made for a quick cash in and you know the plot, and you know they’re going to announce a sequel a week down the line, that’s already been filmed anyway. Avengers is a good example of that also, the costumes are awful.

Industry is really churning out some awful stuff at the moment, and the fact that marvel have all of their films planned up into the 2020s is proof of how ideas are running thin and reboots are running tiresome.

Where has the originality gone? If they’re gonna make another spiderman, at the very least have it as Miles Morales from the Ultimate series. At least that’s different, changing it up a bit.

So in conclusion my thoughts are Marvels general output is trash and has been since we entered the 2010’s, Possibly as far back as 2008.

I disagree with you. The only Marvel Studios film I hated was Iron Man 3 because I’ve read the comics and know who the Mandarin is. But every other film was really good IMO. I admit I’m a bit biased towards the Raimi Spider-Man films cause I’ve read the comics and know for a fact Raimi’s Peter Parker is nothing like the comics. I’m tired of people saying stuff like that Peter Parker is a shy awkward nerd cause that’s just not the case in the comics.

Here’s an example. Peter can’t talk to women at the beginning of Spider-Man 1 before the Spider Bite. Then he still can’t talk to women after the spider bite. In the comics before the spider bit him, Peter asks out a girl. He’s not even capable of that in the movie even after the spider bite. Not to mention I’ve never met any guy who was 17 or 18 years of age who couldn’t talk to women. I’m sorry but because of that I really can’t relate to Tobey’s Peter. There’s times in both Spider-Man 1 and 2 where I want to grab him and shake him while yelling, 'Have some freaking self respect!" In the comics Peter had no trouble getting girls interested in him. Both Betty Brant and Liz Allen wanted to be with him in the original comics. But in the Raimi he’s so awkward and nerdy that a nerdy girl wants nothing to do with him.
