I just straight up told my wife. There isn’t anything to be ashamed of. We all have hobbies, and if there is any objection just mention that it’s not any different than spending money and time on fly fishing, hunting and golf. And let her get involved too. You never know, it could be another activity that you two would enjoy.
Honestly though if you can get your wife involved somehow I think she be more accepting. Tell her about all the charity work the 501st and the Ghostbuster franchises do. But try to get her invovled. My Ex could not understand why I dressed as a WWII soldier and would go and do reenactments ( as well as owning all sorts of WWII era weapons). The final straw for us is when my Bud pulled up to the house in a halftrack.
Tell her to get into kitchen and make some meatloaf, tell her that the kitchen is her room, that that is why she has small feet so she can stand closer to the stove.
The only advice I can give (and mind you I’m probably not qualified at all to offer advice on this subject) is to try and involve her. She may enjoy working on this stuff with you and if you explain that it’s something that makes you happy, that it’s a childhood dream realized, she’d probably be more inclined to ease up on the topic.
Just remember that a hobby can quickly turn to an obsession, so make sure you don’t start ignoring her or your other responsibilities.
To be honest, I think I would of told her BEFORE I got married. Probably back during the time you dated. That way, they have knowledge. Last think you need is her seeing you walk out the door every couple weeks with a big bin, questioning if you are cheating on her while you are gone for hours on end.
Plain and simple, WITH ANY HOBBY, you explain it early, so they don’t freak out on ya. Who cares if they accept it or not, if they do, perfect, if they don’t, than they can either choose to ignore it, or not stick around. Again, explain these things before you make a huge commitment.
Well for me the sudden need to release my inner nerd didn’t sneak up on me until after we were married. I didn’t have much in the way of hobbies before that, other than playing video games or surfing the web.
If she didn’t know you had these interests before you got married, or she is unable to accept you for these interests, then you fucked up and married the wrong chick.
My wife was very accepting of my pack build. However, there were a few spots last summer where I would disappear for the entire day, ignoring her and the kids, to work on it, which I really felt bad about. The only other time a problem popped up was when I totally changed directions on my thrower and ended up spending over three times what I originally had.
In the end though, she knew that this was something that I had dreamed about since I was a kid, and even when we were dating, I would talk about someday building a pack, so she was understanding, for which I am very grateful! Like Vince said, maybe get her involved, and make sure you don’t ignore your responsibilities as a husband.
I’m pretty honest with her about it. She just think i’m nuts. But overall she knows she will have a badass costume her Trekkie brothers would be jealous of, so she doesnt mind too much. lol
