Not only that but if the GBs work for the city, what city is going to employee a team of Drs running around the city. Salary would realistically be probably on par with other emergency response, which would going to school for 6+ years really be worth that? I mean if you really REALLY love doing it, but having whole teams like that would be very rare.
I’d almost like to see something like the episode “knock knock” from the cartoon. Not exactly like that but it can be worked to where thats how they either end it totally or thats how they pass the tourch type thing.

The GB company no longer exists, like Dan said, they have to reopen the business because of supernatural phenomenas increasing..but Egon and Ray realize that they can’t handle this job with half the team and almost twice the age, so they hire a new team.

I swear, if the movie starts out with “The Ghostbusters are no longer in business” AGAIN, I won’t even go see it. I’ve sat through that twice already (GB2 and EGB). They don’t have to start off as Ghostbusters International with a high rise office and thousands of agents, either, but grife, try something a little different.
I guess I really can’t add a whole lot–you can get an idea of what I’d want to see by reading some of my own stories, but I guess the main thing I’d have to say is that whatever the threat is, please, let it not have a darn thing to do wtih Gozer or Vigo. I thought Vigo not having a thing to do with Gozer was one of the things GB2 did right, and I have to roll my eyes at GBVG trying to retcon a connection between them after all.
What if the movie starts off with the Ghostbuster’s franchise already vastly expanded with new professionals heading up departments in other cities and the originals still kicking it in NYC; however, they are in the middle of training their replacements?
Think of it like the Star Wars prequels… We never see Qui-Gon Jinn taking on Obi-Wan as his padawan. When The Phantom Menace starts off, Obi-Wan is already well into his training and getting ready for the trials to becoming a Jedi Master. The same goes with Anakin. At the end of TPM, Obi-Wan agrees to train him, and then the next time we see him in Attack of the Clones, 10-years have past and he is well on his way to becoming a Master himself.
If they take this approach, they could really cut down on some of the character development and relationship building between existing character and new characters. The originals would already have a familiar relationship established with any GBs and could help clue in the audience by making vague references to events not witnessed on screen. Rather than taking time to show an event the helps define the character, just quickly mention it so that the audience can gather their own impression. Also, they can bypass any “basic training” that has already been cover in past movies (crossing the streams, don’t look directly into the trap, the light is green- the trap in clean, ect…)
Perhaps a they could have a massive event at the end of the movie that requires ALL the Ghostbusters to unite in a grand climatic battle to save the world. I imagine something along the lines of the Jedi arriving to save Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme on Geonosis or the old Order of the Phoenix arriving just in time to fight off the Death Eaters in Harry Potter 5.
How would I like to write the future script? I’d like to keep it planted closer to reality rather than cross-dimensional planes. That stuff is fine for video games, they can take much more drastic twists for the target audience. Movies however that just isn’t going to cut it. Too bazaar doesn’t work, keeping reality in mind is best. As well as historical chronology of the movie.
You first need to look at why Ghostbusters exist, not the movie itself but the business. The only time they have business is when a malevolent and powerful Deity decides they want to show how big their ■■■■■ are. It’s the energy and actions of the Deity that, as a side effect, trigger and strengthen other paranormal activity to the point where the ghosts are no longer just echos but amplified like a focused non-terminal repeating Phantasm, or a Class V Full Roaming Vapor. 
Without a source of energy to allow for such occurrences then you won’t have any Ghosts. Such as the Gray Lady, there’s only ever been reports of her sightings and by all assumptions they’re most likely low level echos. It wasn’t until Gozers returning that the echo became strong enough to manifest into a Phantasm which caught the attention of the Ghostbusters. So without Gozer most likely the Gray Lady would’ve continued to have just been an echo and not have been of any concern to the library staff or the Ghostbusters.
So unless there are continuously new Deities all throughout the rest of the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s to allow Ghosts to feed off their energy and manifest into the Ghosts then the Ghostbusters will really have no business. Yes yes it’d be nice to just assume they will continue to have business for 20 years, but historically speaking based from the movies this just doesn’t seem possible.
Where do we go from there, then? Well if there are no Deities from the 80’s to the 00’s then it’s safe to assume that paranormal occurrences are at a minimum or none at all. So they would be forced to go “out of business” yet again and part ways. Ray has a great setting from the 2nd movie, Ray in his occult shop. And as most already agree on Egon as a college professor is a logical and accepted choice after 'Busters. Winston I think would go back to the work force, I’m not 100% sure what he’d be doing. Depends on his background and resume. He seemed more like a man that could do any number of jobs, the jack of all trades kind of person. Peter… due to his character there’s a large number of possibilities. But I think if he published a couple books and went on book tours, frequented as a guest on TV shows, etc. would be plausible. That’s up his ally. Though 2 or so books in 20+ years seems to leave a large gap of extra time. It’d be really difficult to have that much of a timeframe devoted to just that. 5 years tops I could see devoted to the books and show appearances. Not 20. So possibly host a radio show. Maybe even use the popularity from his book tours, make them a huge success, with his charisma and charm, to launch him into public office. Mayor of New York. I mean he’s helped save the city twice… New Yorkers will love him. As a New Yorker I can speak from experience, before the attacks on Sept 11th Rudy Giuliani was not exactly what one would call a popular man. Then overnight became America’s Mayor! He didn’t do anything yet New York fell in love w/ him out of support for our city/state/country. (I will say he was good as the District Attorney, his style and experience was perfect for that job, he was a pitbull. But that’s not the kind of guy you put in charge as Mayor.) Venkman would have saved NY and mankind as a whole twice. No way he’s not getting huge popular support.
So that’s where they are now. What will bring them back together? December of 2012 is the easiest and absolutely most perfectest choice. Numerous cultures point to then as “Doomsday”, it doesn’t have to be specifically Mayan. But the aligning of the planets and the sun centering on the Intergalactic Cross can be the focal point, the event that triggers the coming of some all-powerful Deity. With the eventual coming of that Deity the obvious result will be paranormal activities skyrocket, just like in the previous movies.
And yes, they can not bust ghosts forever, they are getting up there in age. And with a Deity of this magnitude they will need to recruit fresh blood in order to overcome. Not all 18-20 year olds. I’m not 100% sure how this would be best to go down. One idea I have is one recruit per 'Buster. Egon recruits a college student, so 18-21. Ray recruits somebody who is deep into studying the occult, 28-30. Peter hires a girl because he wants some pie, 20-23. Winston hires a street-smart and handy guy/co-worker, 32-35. Keeps ages spread out a bit so it’s not just all new Twilight teens. But I’m still mulling around exactly what would be best on new recruits. But in the end the fact still remains that the current lineup is old and beaten up, they can’t continue forever, recruits are necessary if this business is to continue at all. As much as the “passing of the torch” scenario is cliche… it’s sadly necessary. UNLESS they pull this movie off and THEN decide that they’re too old and need to recruit right at the end of the movie to draw people into the conclusion that a sequel is coming out. But really it’s best to get it done with now, just in case. They’re all getting up there, no exact guarantee that after a 2012 movie that a 2015 sequel with all 4 will be possible. Not to mention no guarantee all 4 will sign on again. So best to get 4 fresh faces in there now, like ripping off a bandaid just get it over w/ fast as possible.
As for which exact Deity to bust, not sure. I haven’t settled exactly which one because that’s really a tough choice that can make/break the movie. Kind of debating an actual historical figure or a made up one. But in general they’ll train the recruits, probably on the job, treat them like Winston. “You want the job? You’re hired. Suit up. Grab these…” They’ll bust ghosts, find clues to the puzzle, maybe have it not just NY centralized (also not settled on this, just thinking of possibilities) but a world-wide hunt where 'Busters need to go to Egypt, Germany, LA, Japan, Mexico, etc. Depends on the Deity and what the puzzle pieces to solve would end up being. Ya but they eventually get the clues to figure out exactly what’s going on and use that knowledge to fight the Deity and save the day.
Meph that sounds pretty good actually. Re Egypt maybe leave that out since Holywood has milked that idea for ages (Stargate, Mummy, even Transformers2)

What about it taking place around Valentine’s Day 2016? If the first psychic in GB2 was nearly right about the world ending on New Year’s Eve (Vigo happens to show up and try and take over the world that night?), why couldn’t the other lady have been partly right, too?
It does give them a few years to wait though… Hmmm…
Them starting out being out of business again would kind of suck though.

The World of the Pyschic lady didn’t really meet an alien or have an end of the world date. She cheated on her husband, and she came up with this wild story, and the lies escalated to the point that she went on this TV show to keep it going. Thus the look Venkman gives to the camera. Just wanted to throw that in there, not step on anybody’s toes.

The Ghostbusters are confronted with somewhat Anti-Ghostbusters, i.e. mad scientists who have copied their technology and stolen their theoretical knowledge, but use it for making an own bed for world ■■■■■■■■■■ by abuse of paranormal powers instead of ghostbusting.
These scientists formerly worked as the PSI-Department of KGB - and received their information on the Ghostbusters’ research from the most brilliant spy of the USSR: Ludwik Tomašek, better known under his alias Louis Tully. - This also explains why Louis disappeared in 1991. 
Using that technology, the PSI-Department created a ESP-Transmitter, which enabled them to contact the “old gods” hiding deep in space in 1985. And a pact is signed with one of these: Ea, father of Marduk agreed to guarantee the Soviets world ■■■■■■■■■■ – in reward they would allow his permanent residence on earth.
Ea correctly predicted that his journey to earth would take “26 of your human beings’ years”. However meanwhile the Soviet Union collapsed – but the PSI-Department survived as a secret society under the leadership of its former chairman Leonid Ivanovic Drosdov, which continues the plan to take over the world.
The action starts with the Premiere of the Movie “Ghostbusters XIII – Samhain’s Revenge”, written by Peter Venkman, featuring Brad Pitt as Dr. Peter Venkman. Many guests have been invited, also including former Ghostbusters, foreign Ghostbusters and the pretty young police officer Lt. Oscar Barrett. - However before the party may begin the team is finishing a job.
All goes good, but as they’re trying to shoot the ghosts with their proton packs… there’s no effect. Instead they disappear, and suddenly the team is surrounded by cops. Drosdov is with them.
Drosdov uses some kind of scanner and after nosing around some time he grabs a small device, which has been stored in Ecto-1, but is completely unknown to the team. Then he demonstrates its function (switch on – ghosts appear, switch off – ghosts disappear) and blames them for deceit.
Finally they get arrested and in the following days Drosdov successfully launches a dirt-campaign against them, resulting in the Flopping of the movie, abortion of toy sales and so on. Over night the former heroes of New York become the most hated persons in town.
However the former-student and foreign Ghostbusters as well as Oscar do of course not believe him and start their own investigations, corresponding with the original team. Oscar quickly finds out who Drosdov is, but too late: Drosdov has already blamed him for his cooperation with the illegal working new team and so he’s thrown out of service.
A Meteorite crashes into the Pacific, infecting the seas with an alien life form, which is an oversized variant of a green Slime Mold – Ea.
During the following weeks the Ea-organism grows and grows, until it covers all oceans. Meanwhile the paranormal activity also increases, because Ea produces extreme values of PKE, but doesn’t use it for itself and instead „feeds“ ghosts with it to defend him.
The Ghostbusters in foreign countries and the illegally working new team in New York do all they can, but Ea seems to be unstoppable.
Finally, the original team is set free by the President, who sees no other option to do, since Ea even survived an atomic blast.
In the showdown the old and the new ghostbusters face Drosdov, who has constructed a “Godmachine”, which would transfer all PKE from Ea into himself, turning him into a god. Before the Process is completed, Egon hacks the ESP-Transmitter Drosdov used to communicate with Ea and tells him about the truth – which leads him to switch sides and destroy the strange creature Drosdov had become.
In the last act Ea creates the image of a wizard and apologizes to the Ghostbusters, stating that he once lived with together with mankind on earth, but was expulsed by Gozer and since then dreamed of returning, but has realized that the pact with Drosov was entirely wrong – and some other ununderstable things.
Then he leaves earth, and the Ghostbusters are outside again welcomed by an excited crowd.
