Ok, I searched about this, but didn’t find any results I felt answered my question. Where is the best place to find the foam padding that goes on the top of the Alice pack frame? Also, how long should the section of foam be?
well thats simple enough to answer. its pipe insulation, you can get it at any hardware store. then use either electric tape or black zip ties to hold it down
Ah, thank you.
Keoni is right about the padding, but I thought I should add that you can also get it at Wal-Mart. Another thing: I would strongly suggest you go with zip ties to hold it on. They hold better than tape and are accurate to the movies, last I checked.
i thought walmart may have them but i didnt want to say it and not know for sure. also, the tape holds just fine; well mine has anyways. and i didnt know that the zip ties were what was used in the movie. guess i learned something today after all.
I found mine at Rona. Home Depot, Canadian Tire or the equivelant should have it as well.
Because I did the RGB pack, I used electrical tape to hold the padding on. Just pull’r tight and it aint goin anywhere. Creative freedom is a good thing. ![]()
what diameter foam padding is accurate? I stopped by a place that had 1", 1.5" and 3/4".
anyone?
No sure about GB2 as I really have not looked into it much but I believe it was at least similar to the pipe insulation you can get now, but maybe not identical, as for the padding on the GB1 packs is wasn’t pipe insulation, at least not like the stuff you get now, it was a different type of foam… I suspect maybe an industrial pipe insulation foam…
So “accurate” size is pretty much a shot in the dark…
If it was my I would probably go for the 1/2" iron (aka 3/4" cooper) padding as it will fit the frame a little better or at least give a little play that might not be found in the 3/8" iron (aka 1/2" copper) padding but the smaller one should work too just be a tighter fit…
Do notice the double sizes and pay attention to the package as they are not all labeled consistently from brand to brand…
If all else fails pick up both sizes they are only about $2 a length…
its accurate for a GB1 pack to have the padding just elextrical taped around the frame right? And the bottom of the padding split? Also, id assume its some kind of thicker electrical tape, not the small stuff..
Looks like Gaffers (Gaf) tape to me not electrical tape…
^ Cool… i was using electrical.
The reason I suspect gaffers tape is that it’s the fix all ‘duct tape’ of the entertainment business… There are always rolls of it handy as it’s used for everything, so it makes sense…
It’s also expensive as hell.
Tried with electrical tape, not quite happy with how it looks yet…

Yeah doing the same thing myself now..
Which is right though?
The foam on the frame itself or a pad above them frame?

The “right” way is… neither of those:

The bar is wedged in the slit in the foam, but does not pass through the middle of it. You can see this most clearly in the roof scene, but I don’t have any captures from that.
And yes, it does seem to have gaffer tape or something on it. You can see from the highlight it’s kinda shiny, and there seems to be a lip at the edge. I’m pretty sure they’re held on with zip ties too.
I believe they were intended to be around the tube, but they mabe slipped during filming process.
These photos are not mine. They are “borrowed” from the “Attaching motherboard to pack shell w/pics” ![]()
Right click Aykroyd’s pic and hit view image. It should open much bigger. It does look like gaffer tape but there’s something different… I don’t know. Gaffer tape is more matte, and most of the ones I’ve seen, if not all, have some kind of texture. In those shots, you can see a little bit of reflection on it.
I think I might have some left around the house, but I do need to get the pipe insulation and rig the whole thing to compare it.
