padding at the top of the alice frame?

Looked using search, but didn’t find the answer so here goes.

Does anyone know where I can get the padding that goes on the top of the alice pack frame? I’m speaking of the dark colored foam that runs along the top of the pack.

lowes or home depot, look in the plumbing section as it’s plumbing insulation

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought it looked like something I had seen at Home Depot, but wasn’t sure. Is there a certain way it needs to be done? Might sound stupid, but I’d like to do it right the first time. Thanks.

I think you just cut it, peel off the sticky tape, and apply. You may need to cut some area for the straps to go through (so they don’t touch the adhesive)

yeah, i just used scissors and cut it. I went without the adhesive kind though since ya gotta slap some zip ties on it anyway

Good call. I’ve only seen the kind with adhesive, then again, I bought mine at WalMart *

Anyone have any decent reference pics of how it should look. Oh, and thanks for mentioning the zip ties. I didn’t know.

Look at this thread: GBFans.com.

Someone has posted pictures in there of the different ways to attach the foam to the ALICE frame.

Sweet, thanks!

really?? theres a seperate thread??? you look at a reference pic, slip the precut foam onto the bar after your straps are in place and then you zip tie it. what in that is thread worthy???

edit-- ahh its a thread for the whole thing, not just the foam LOL!!

Its a whole thread that is stickied that explains the differences between screen accurate ALICE Frames for each movie and someone later posted about the difference in how the foam tubing is attached to the frame. Don’t make me MS Paint you a picture!

Okay, so the fact that there’s no bras in space just topped whatever else I was gunna say. Kudos!

LOL! yeah, sorry about your thread man

It’s okay, cause I’m a 501st Legion member, so I’m all about Star Wars. LOL! And bouncing stuff. :sunglasses:

yep, know the feeling I’m ex501st

The pads in the first film were placed so that the slit in the pad was around the metal bar, but the bar doesn’t actually pass through the hole in the pad. The pad almost sits on top of the bar instead of the bar being threaded through it.

The easiest place to see this is in the rooftop sequence.

The pad is also wrapped in matte black gaffer’s tape. Don’t subsitute gorilla tape though. Gorilla tape’s ahesive, in my experience, disintegrates after a couple months and you’ll be left with a gooey mess.

I used some plumbing insulation that my dad had in his barn. It was old and some sections of the adhesive parts stopped being sticky. I just framed it on the pack, exacto-knifed the areas for the straps, and electrical taped the sections that weren’t sticking. It looks fine to me.
