Alternate Alice pack and other first time questions.

I’m making my own Proton pack but cannot get hold of a Alice pack, any ideas on what else i could use or build. Also on the Proton Wand there are these little switches that turn it on, what have you guys used for these?

I’d be grateful for any other help on the little metal fittings and switches on the pack or any pointers for a first time builder. I’ve checked Norms built it pages but would still appreciate your help on this.

I should mention i’m in the Uk, and not a great deal of money to spend.

Thanks in advance.

It’s probably cheaper to buy a real alice pack then to try to make one.. they can be had for as little as $20 shipped.

Check ebay, and some of the ebay stores.. also a used alice frame is fine.. they are very durable.

Make SURE they include all the straps and pads, especially the kindey strap/pad.

I saw alice frames complete with military packs for $30 shipped when I was hunting for ours.

some folks have made their own frames out of pvc pipes and elbows, 3/4" i suspect. garee is right though, real alice frames are pretty cheap if you look around some. just google it, you’ll find lots more than if you just use ebay.

You can get the switches here:

and go here for the pushbuttons;

I’m not sure if you’re planing on putting lights in your wand, but if you are make sure these are compatible with your setup… otherwise just use them as non functioning switches as I have, until I get a light kit.

Sorry guys… but He’s in the UK. You cant get a cheap ALICE frame here anymore. They used to be available for £10 but the company closed down. Now the cheapest you can probably get on for is £40. If making from scratc this will probably be the most expensive part of the pack. Even shipping one of the ones that are $18 on ebay is about £50 for shipping.

If you’re confident you can make a good one thats strong then I say go for it. Its what I did with my first one. Made from PVC pipe and 3/4 elbows.

Good luck…

Lawrence

*edit:

This is also something I was looking into when I was on a budget. But I haven’t ever used one

are there no army/navy surplus stores in the UK?

Many US ebay people will ship overseas.. and with the dollar/pound ratio, it works out very well for them.

Plus you need army surplus anyway for a flight suit, and a pistol belt anyway.

Shop the us ebay stores, and find one that will ship overseas… they are hungry for money now, and I’m getting mailings from then.

Fair point… but £52 for postage is too much to pay IMO.

Cheapest postage I’ve seen to here from the US is about £25 and then you still got to add the price of the frame (and the ones who offer the cheap postage aren’t the cheapest of frames on ebay)

Yeah, you can get the pistol belts here, but nowhere sells the flightsuits either. Which is why I purchased mine from you

Yeah… there are lots. But its all British issue gear. ALICE frames are US issue.

There are no US Army / Navy Surplus stores in the UK. (okay… there might be one.)

I’m sure a ghosthead here could snag what ya need, and ship it for actual shipping costs. Might be better to find someone in a big city so they can pick it up for you without any additional shipping costs.

I might be able to get a complete alice frame and strap set here for $30, but that’s a bit high comparted with other prices I saw when I picked mine up.

That was on the first page of a Google search, I’m not going to say it’s easy to source over there but they are available just need to dig in…

Several years ago I really wanted a East German officers trench coat gray on gray… It took me almost a year to source one, talk about a pain in the butt, but persistence did pay off as I actually found a US based military surplus store that had imported a bunch of them back when East Germany collapsed and had tucked remaining stock away in deep storage… I ended up getting it for $30 and it was in ‘new’ condition…

I always tell people persistence…

And persistence indeed pays off.

I scored a pair of vintage Sidi Full-Bore motorcycle boots (seen in the original Battlestar Galactica TV show) for $87 with $12 shipping.

A good buy considering these boots are in high demand by collectors and normally go for $250 on up. I’ve seen them as high as $400.

Yeah.. as I said in my first post. They are available here at most online army stores. But not at any kind of price most could afford. With shipping the cheapest I have found has worked out to be £40 (which is about $60-$70) I think this is ridiculous considering you can buy one for $9 in the USA.

Your £ is dropping in value £40 = just over $57 and when factored in really isn’t that far out of line…

My local surplus store sells them for $65, so if you can find a local shop that will do you for £40 you are doing better them me and I’m in the US…

But yeah we can source them in the US for about $9 online sometimes, but with shipping is still cost $20+ usally closer to $30

And actually it depends on what you are getting for your money.. some alice frames come with complete packs.. and the packs are VERY durable and worth probably every penny.

We plan on picking up two more frames and packs, so we can use them for camping and hiking trips.. they are much better then anything you’l find off the shelf in most stores, and FAR more durable I’m sure!

Im in the UK as well and its impossible to find a cheap Alice Frame

There’s one on ebay uk right now for £6.58

Like Exoray said…persistence.

Where?

I googled ebay uk, and then search for alice frame
