Another Ecto-van (WIP)

Freedom of speech being what it is, BigJon is as welcomed to post this as Boomer and the others are to post negative responses. Honestly, thought Boomer’s comment was just as funny as Jon’s “Thanks for the negative comment! Have a great day!” Both of these made me actually laugh out loud.

Yeah, sure, it’s a garbage scow with decals on it but the man’s put some work into it. Besides we DO have commercial service vehicles around here that look like that. My favorite is a van for mobile vehicle repair, whose door is duct taped in place. Talk about warning you in advance of the lousy business they run. I honestly think Jon’s van does have a genuine “used service vehicle” look to it. Maybe it gives it a little character along the way? Sure, I think a paintjob could be in order but on the other hand, that’s not my car or my call to make.

Jon’s happy and therefore I’m happy for him. On the flip side of the coin, no one promised that we’d all post warm, fuzzy things about all projects we’ve worked on. I’ve done a couple that were trainwrecks and I’m glad people told me as much. Keep posting on it BigJon, I’d be curious to see how it turns out. If anything I sort of respect that you used a vehicle that no one else has used yet. That sort of brings a little personality of you into it.

Maybe I was wrong.

Maybe instead of providing honest feelings and opinions about work presented on a discussion board, I should have just patted his back and said “good job.”

Maybe that’s what we should all do, regardless of the quality of each others work.

Maybe we should all just be polite, non-critical people, congratulating each other heftily for even our poorest efforts.

Maybe it’s not such a bad idea for a discussion board to instead become an enormous circle jerk of inept retards, where the rape van gets just as much praise as the insane brake test with a 60s Cadillac or the slow-yet-steady improvement of a Chevy Lumina.

Or maybe BigJon should grow a pair of balls (maybe even little ones) so that he can take criticism like a man, and understand that the majority of users feel the need to send their kids inside and plug their buttholes with epoxy sealant the first instant they see the Ghostbusters car that he poured an entire five minutes worth of effort into.

Maybe I’ll take a giant crap on AJ’s lawn, put some caution stripes on it, and then post it on the internet so I can bitch when someone goes, “Hey, that looks like a turd!”

This all translates to an excuse for being a shithead to other people, under the guise of “criticism.” I notice that you have a talent for criticizing others. It’s pretty much what most of your posts amount to. It seems like you’ve got someone new on your radar every week.

I really like the van, Big. If you think back to the original Ecto, it was a beat-up, rough-around-the-edges vehicle, so I feel this is something the Ghostbusters could have used. I would have to use it as a rape dungeon, though.

It may need a point job, but it’s not bad. I think once it’s finished it’ll be pretty cool. I’ve always wanted to do a VW van Ecto. Not everything can be completely perfect and screen accurate. We should be able to put a twist on things without being made fun of. Yes everyone has the right to their own opinion, but you can express it without being rude.

what i dont think is being noticed is with all the decals in place, i dont think theres any sort of intent on giving it a paint job. not even a 10 spray cans worth for 10 bucks one.

Never said I wasn’t going to paint it. Work with me here folks. (Money + time) - (kids + mortgage/bills) = 0 The stripe was already applied because I had to. It covers a blue stripe that was already on the van and was unremoveable. After my van was broken into I had to replace the driver’s door (they hollowed out a hole the size of a fist around the lock…and STILL couldn’t get in…so broke a window), so that’s why one door is off-color. I applied the stripe so I didn’t look like a tool with one unstriped door. Just trying to get a quick mockup together for a parade in July. As money is slowly saved up it’ll get upgraded.

Sadly, Boomer has a really valid point. I’ve seen plenty of turds on this forum and another over the years. Someone stands back from their TERRIBLE effort, admires it, posts pics and waits for positive feedback to come rolling in. Somewhere along the process, it feels like America ( maybe many global societies ) lost their way. People got it into their heads that they should always be patting others on the back and every contest ends with “everyone’s a winner!” kind of BS that pretty much denigrates the concept of accomplishment.

How would you feel knowing your doctor / airline pilot / car mechanic graduated with terrible marks and an ineptitude for their job, but because society hands out praise to make everyone feel good they are now in charge of your destiny? No thanks.

I respect BigJon’s intentions and recognize his efforts, I really do. As for how those efforts are turning out? Well… For those of you who prefer serious critical feedback, I’d give it a “D”. For those of you who want to feel good, a “D” is still a passing grade. ( Honestly, hidden blue stripe or not I’d have painted the thing first. )

The point is, there’s a difference between constructive criticism and, well…just plain being an a**hole. Freedom of speech also gives us the freedom to call someone out when their comments are unnecessarily harsh or, in a lot of cases, useless. I can agree with your point that we shouldn’t have to kiss everyone’s ass and give them an A for effort, but the degradation of proper manners and etiquette and general lack of respect for others is also a problem in our society, especially on the Internet, where there is still a certain amount of anonymity and people can feel secure being dipsh*ts because there aren’t any negative repercussions for that behavior.

BigJon, the thing really needs a paint job before you go any further and maybe should have been the first step; if you had intened it to have that aged workers truck look maybe you should find a way to pull that together so its more obvious and just doesn’t seem lazy. But the decals looks really good and from the pictures it seems like you did a good job placing them. Good luck with it!

See, now that’s not a bad idea. Maybe if a few of the decals were chipped or missing. I know the no-ghost magnets are starting to get some dirt on them. Maybe rub some dirt on the caution stripe, too.

It would appear that Foos and Spooky have covered this turf, but hey… I just finished typing this up.

BigJon demonstrated humility via self-deprecation early on, so it doesn’t appear that he’s under any illusions here. He clearly states that it’s a work in progress, and we have yet to see what he’ll do.

There is some valid criticism in this thread, but damn if that well wasn’t poisoned early on by quips and vitriol.

Boomer, given how much work you’ve put in to your sweet ride, I can understand why something like this seems like an affront to your senses. You busted your ass, and you expect everyone to try meet a higher standard for propping. There’s nothing wrong with that.

And Fifthrider is correct: not everyone should get a ribbon for pumping just any prop out, and we can speak however we like to each other. Right on. We’re big kids, and we have to be able to weather words. More often than not, feedback, be it positive or negative, can drive us.

However, it’d be a lot more beneficial to everyone involved to keep the discourse civil. Last I checked, constructive commentary doesn’t involve elements like rape, retards, balls and turds. They do, however, make for a brilliant episode of South Park.

Speak your mind, just don’t lose it whilst doing so.
